Two write Conan

Just when you thought the idea of remaking / reimagining CONAN might be scrapped and discarded with the rest of bad ideas, Lionsgate hires a couple of writers to bring the big man back to the big screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain have been hired by Lionsgate to bring a fresh take to the sword-wielding monster-battling hero. But wait, didn’t they already have writers working on a script? Yes, yes they did–and still do! Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer are also working on a draft. Two teams of writers cranking out one movie? I don’t know whether this is a good thing… or a bad thing.

The good: the best script wins, and with two teams set out to write it, you’re chances of it being good are higher than before. The bad: too many cooks in the kitchen, things get worse before they get better. Let’s hope for the good. Apparently the film is getting fast-tracked to the big screen with a budget exceeding $100M–the biggest ever for a Lionsgate picture.

As producer Fredrik Malmberg puts it, Fans expect (these types of movies) to be more true to the source material. There’s no reason there couldn’t be a Conan movie every two years. He’s almost like Batman: He’s a dark hero. He’s a hard hero. He has to be badass, but we also have to like him.

Let’s hope they do the character some justice. No director has been tapped to take on the role, which will likely be the next step to this fast-tracked process. Stick around as we find who will be behind the new epic, as well as who will fill the shoes of the main ‘badass’ character.
