Universal still excited to make The Legend of Conan with Schwarzenegger

Apr. 7, 2014by: Kevin Woods

The great Arnold Schwarzenegger's latest action flick SABOTAGE suffered a dismal opening but that hasn't stopped Universal from looking ahead to a film many of you would be stoked to see finally happen: THE LEGEND OF CONAN, aka KING CONAN (a title that I prefer!). Now our pals over at TheArnoldFans have gotten word from producer Fredrick Malmberg and scriptwriter Andrea Berloff that interest in another CONAN adventure is still high and that we could see THE LEGEND OF CONAN coming at us sooner than we could've hoped!

LEGEND OF CONAN producer Fredrick Malmberg shared...

“The co-president over there at Universal Pictures is Jeffrey Kirschenbaum, and he’s one of the top two executive producers. He has a huge position there at Universal, and he’s always been a huge Conan fan. ‘I want to make Conan,’ he’s said many times.”

Malmberg elaborates...

“We have a great story. Everyone loves it. This is a role that's perfect for him (Arnold) and he's very involved with the whole Universal team. It's the best team they have. Arnold has been very instrumental to being this together saying, 'We gotta make a good Conan!' I think if we do this right, we can do two more Conan movies right after. I think Game of Thrones also shows a huge interest in fantasy. I'm psyched about it.”

Hey, I'd be down for a new trilogy of CONAN films! Let's hope it happens.

Screenwriter Andrea Berloff has shared that the script for THE LEGEND OF CONAN is almost complete and that we are in for quite a treat:

“I am completely thrilled and honored to be writing Conan. My fingers are nearly worn down to tiny, bloody nubbins as I'm working to give this iconic character new life, while still holding true to the qualities that made fans fall in love with him in the first place.”

“I have a fantastic team of producers around me and we are all ridiculously excited about how our beloved barbarian is developing."

TheArnoldFans goes on to share that with major enthusiasm from the movie studio and producers for another Conan adventure, THE LEGEND OF CONAN (KING CONAN) will most likely immediately follow TERMINATOR: GENESIS! Let's keep our fingers crossed that we'll hear an announcement soon.

Although Schwarzenegger's last few films, including SABOTAGE, THE LAST STAND, and ESCAPE PLAN, didn't exactly light up the box office, Universal Pictures is smart enough to know Conan is a franchise event film with worldwide appeal, not just a generic action hero, and there are legions of fans that would welcome another CONAN film as long as Schwarzenegger was returning to the character.

So what say you? Would you plop down the cash to see THE LEGEND OF CONAN (KING CONAN) in theaters? Would you love to see Arnold return to this iconic character?

Misleading Article

This reads like fans trying to do some basic spin control, as all of those quotes are from old interviews that have appeared on the Arnold Fans website. The article doesn't include any new confirmation from Universal that they are still excited about a Conan sequel, but does start out by revealing the studio has lost interest in making Twins 2. I don't know how that's supposed to be interpreted as a good sign for them agreeing to an even costlier production.

I guess I'm up for it. I suppose there are plenty of stories to tell about an older Conan as King. There's no sense in recasting an aging Conan, since we already have one. I'd also be up for a reboot too, but hopefully something a bit better than the SyFy original we recently got.

With the right director it could work.

I'm a HUGE Arnie fan. I grew up in the 80's and nobody, I repeat NOBODY, was cooler than Arnold. I don't want a remake because let's face it, Arnie was so perfect as Conan it wouldn't work.

I want Paul Verhoeven to reunite with Arnold for one last time. Why not John Milius you ask? I honestly can't remember the last movie he did other than Red Dawn. Verhoeven atleast has a mildly recognizable name, and I believe will push the limits and give a huge middle finger to shallow Hollywood

Now to respond to Nivekian's post, I'm not opposed to other characters taking place in the Conan universe, but the role of Conan should die with Arnold. With the Momoa Conan I expected mediocrity but what I got was a movie I could not even finish. If I had gone to see it in theaters it would have been only the second movie I've walked out of.

I'm a Conan fan, I don't want this.

I would rather see another reboot with a younger depiction of Conan, that watch a 20 years later sequel to (some pretty weak) adoptions of a character that was a name before Arnold. Let him play a rusty Terminator in a saggy skin suit, there are so many Conan stories to do that would be great on the big screen, why play to the novelty nostalgia crowd yet again?

Well they tried with the Momoa flick and look what happened. I am personally pumped to see Arnold do King Conan and believe that he will own it! He just needs to get in the Gym.
