Wes Craven questions whether or not you really want Scream 5

Nov. 12, 2012by: Ike Oden

Does the world need another entry in the SCREAM franchise? Based on the box office of SCREAM 4 (or SCRE4M, depending on your preferred nomenclature), the answer is probably "No." However, director Wes Craven is still intent on getting the fanbase's opinion. Last night, the Master of Horror took the issue to Twitter, writing "No news on Scream 5 yet. You guys really want another one?"

You can read a lot of layers into this if you want to, but the fact of the matter is the franchise's future has been uncertain since SCREAM 4's release. The films been a great meal ticket for Craven and the Weinsteins, but SCREAM 4's diminished returns seem to signify a loss of interest with modern audiences. Still, the possibility of a 5th film has always been on the table and Craven contractually has a first shot at directing it.

In an interview with us last year, Craven reported "Kevin [Williamson] sketched out a trilogy arc, that was the original concept. I'm sure the studio would like to do the rest of the trilogy, and it seems like the box office - the foreign sales - has justified doing another one. And then it's a matter of a script that's worthy of being the second installment. From what I hear, that's probably what Bob [Weinstein] is doing right now, trying to get to that second concept for a second film."

Yet nothing has come of it. Craven is apparently waiting for Dimension to move the project forward but, knowing Bob and Harvey, SCREAM 5 (or 5CREAM, depending on your preferred nomenclature) could go the way of HALLOWEEN III and the HELLRAISER remake. SCREAM 4 ended the series on a decent note, so what do you guys think? Should we petition for more Ghostface or should Craven and company let it be for the series' sake? Talk back with your opinion below.

Extra Tidbit: Allison Brie (above) stole SCREAM 4 in her brief but memorable role. Hollywood, give us more Allison Brie!

Yes please! just keep the Weinsteins away!!!

If you don't like the series or are sick of it then fair do's - just don't watch. Me? I love the series and loved 4. I had a few gripes - some of the comedy was too out there (Fuck you Bruce Willis - I don't care if there was medical evidence it could happen it just didn't work on film)but at least not as goofy as 3 (which again I still love but I recognise it's problems), more chases and creative kills were needed and alot of characters didn't get enough screen time. At least the brutality

Sorry but for me Scream is about Sidney Prescott and as long as her story is being told she needs to live - I haven't followed her for 4 movies now just to kill her off. I'm not adverse to a completely new storyline being started - but you don't need to bring back the old to kill them just to start it. If you want to kill an original Dewey is always classed as they heart of the group and it could spin the dynamic out if they offed him. For 5 if they had to bring a character back I would want Kirby - she was fantastic and technically was still kicking when we last saw her but maybe another new set of characters is needed. As for a storyline I liked the idea of Sid being left for dead after a party massacre at her home in the opening that was supposed to the opener of 4 that kickstarted the next mystery. Side note : Apparently Kevin Williamson has tweeted he has Scream 5 either written or an outline at least and no-one wants it. (as posted on scream-trilogy.net). Just please please please keep the Weinsteins a million miles away from meddling with this one!!!

Yes Please

I wasn't absolutely thrilled with Scream 4, but like the poster below states, it was definitely better than Scream 3. I would've also preferred they kept Emma Roberts' character alive because it would give a reason to have a sequel whereas I'm not really sure where they would go with this one. Scream 1 satired horror films, Scream 2 was sequels, Scream 3 was trilogies, Scream 4 was remakes/reboots, what would Scream 5 be about? Either way it's my favorite horror series so I would LOVE to have

I loved Scream 4, but with the direction it took see no need for a 5th. If they have a good plot and idea I'd definitely be open to it, but not until they are ready. I suppose that makes me say "Yes, I would like a Scream 5," but only if it's a worthy entry to the series. Brie did steal the show with her role in the 4th. Too bad she won't be returning for another.

The problem with the Scream franchise is that it's about Sidney Prescott. She has had 7 (!) people try to murder her, and all of them failed. Well they did manage to kill 30+ other people, but somehow it's impossible to kill Sidney Prescott. And the motivation in Scream 4 was the same as in Scream 2.

Ghostface should't be tied to Sidney. It should be the costume people use to murder their best friend.

I'm down. Always down for another Scream, if it's well done. I don't want to see some half-assed attempt just to make a buck off the name. I'd also wager they need a new main character. Sidney always seems to be the victim. Granted, in the previous film she kind of made herself the victim accidently. But none the less, how many Scream films can she be the lead of? I also felt there was a lack of creativity as far as kills go in Scream 4 and would like to see a bit more creativity.

I think they should move forward with another one. Scream 4 just didn't do it for me as well as the 3rd one, even though they are more decent than most horror sequels. The brilliant original deserves a brilliant and scary/suspenseful I might add, cap off. Not the silliness the two last sequels brought, that to me almost tarnished the series. The title is Scream so live up to it and have the audience scream in terror. You can have the witty dialogue, but just don't over do it this time, that it

Balance it out like the original did so well at. Yes, PLEASE BRING ON ANOTHER SEQUEL WES. I'll take another sequel to this series than most horror series that overstayed their welcome, Saw comes to mind.

Like Section (8) said , if they really wanted to carry this thing on , they would have ended four on a far better point I would hope . Nobody wants these same tired , annoying characters doing the same damn thing over and over . Four was a fitting send-off , let it go .

Spoiler Warning for you that are reading a S5 story without watching S4

If they really wanted to continue the franchise, they should have killed off Sydney & kept Emma Roberts alive to plot her sequel. With inept Dewey and irrelevant Gale knowing the truth, but unable to prove Emma is the mastermind.
As it stands Scream 4 was a better send off than Scream 3 was.

On a Furher Note

If you take my advice you can also bring back any of the actors from any of the movies. Skeet Ulrich, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mathew Lillard, The Fonz, I would love to see Jada Pinkett Smith die again, What's his nuts who played Sidneys boyfriend in the second one, and my favorite of all time in the series, big beautiful TITS with a green sweater....you know who I'm talking about........Rose McGowan you sexy sexy lady!

Listen to me on this one

If they do another one......do it like New Nightmare where the serial killer goes after the people who played the characters in real life. So Neve Campbell is actually being hunted by a crazed fan! Change the killers outfit a little to give it a more modern touch. For example have the killer put the voice changer in the mask. Kill off multiple main characters like Courtney Cox and David Arquette. Also Kevin Williamson wrote 1 good Scream movie, the first one. Lets get some fresh blood in there

That would be great. That way Neve Campbell could visit the set from Scream 5 where they film the [link] Stab!
