Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing swims to Blu-ray this summer!

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Wes Craven’s bizarro cult classic SWAMP THING is getting cleaned up – well, as clean as it can possibly get – for a Blu-ray release courtesy of, you guessed it, the Shout! Factory! Seriously, can these guys do any wrong?

For connoisseurs of such things, it should be noted that Shout! will only be releasing the 91-minute U.S. cut (the same one that is available now on DVD). There is an international 93-minute cut, but evidently Shout! was not able to obtain the rights to it thanks to the usual legal bullshit.

In any event, a spiffy Blu-ray of the flick will be welcomed by Craven purists and fans of weird cinema in general. Seriously, if it has been a while since you last laid eyes upon this thing, it’s worth a re-visit. (Listen to us rap about it on the AITH Podcast.) No special features have been revealed yet, nor has a precise release date. All we know is it’ll hit during the summer sometime.

The synopsis:

Deep in Florida’s darkest everglades, a brilliant scientist, Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Wise), and a sexy government agent, Alice Cable (Adrienne Barneau), have developed a secret formula that could end world hunger and change civilisation forever. Little do they know, however, that their arch nemesis, Arcane (Louis Jourdan), is plotting to steal the serum for his own selfish schemes. Looting the lab and kidnaping Cable, Arcane douses Holland with the chemicals and leaves him for dead in the swamp. Mutated by his own formula, Holland becomes “Swamp Thing”-a half plant superhero who will stop at nothing to rescue the beautiful Cable and defeat the evil Arcane…even if it costs him his life!
