Before the fantasy/buddy cop mash-up BRIGHT was even released on the Netflix streaming service, word was already out that the company had ordered a sequel to the film. Obviously, and rightfully, emboldened by the 11 million views the film received during its first weekend of release, Netflix has officially confirmed that they are moving forward with a sequel.

Directed by David Ayer from a screenplay by Max Landis (which Netflix purchased for $3 million), BRIGHT stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. The story is set in an

alternate present-day where humans, orcs, elves and fairies have been coexisting since the beginning of time. Ward, a human (Smith), and Jakoby, an orc (Edgerton), embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a young female elf and a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.

Ayer will be writing and directing the sequel, with Smith and Edgerton back in the roles of Ward and Jakoby. The currently untitled follow-up (will it simply be BRIGHT 2?) is being produced by Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless.

BRIGHT has become the highest viewed Netflix film ever and is the #1 movie on Netflix in every country (190+) where the service is available. Like a lot of blockbusters these days, the film has been even more successful internationally than it has been domestically.
