Xavier Gens' The Divide to be released uncut theatrically in January; first cities revealed

10.31.2011by: Eric Walkuski

A few weeks ago, when the official trailer for Xavier Gens' THE DIVIDE hit, we noted that the flick would be released theatrically on JANUARY 13, 2012. While that holds true today, we've learned that the version being released will actually be the full, unrated directors cut, featuring footage not seen during its previous SXSW and Fantasia 2011 screenings. Considering that those cuts reportedly featured some rather heavy-hitting footage, this should come as welcome news for fans of controversial cinema.

In addition to that scoop, here is a tentative list of the cities receiving THE DIVIDE on 1/9/12, courtesy of Anchor Bay Films: New York, Los Angeles, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas and Denver. More markets will be announced soon.

Says Jennifer Roberts, Anchor Bay Film’s SVP of Brand Marketing, “Fans of director Xavier Gens’ Frontier(s) will be pleased to know that once again he has pulled no punches, and has delivered a kick-ass film that will set the bar in extreme cinema. We felt strongly that we needed to bring his full vision to the screen, and confident this is the version audiences will want to see.”

The synopsis: nine strangers—all tenants of a New York high-rise apartment—escape a nuclear attack by hiding out in the building’s bunker-like basement. Trapped for days underground with no hope for rescue, and only unspeakable horrors awaiting them on the other side of the bunker door, the group begins to descend into madness, each turning on one another with physical and psycho-sexual torment. As supplies dwindle, and tensions flare, they grow increasingly unhinged by their close quarters and hopelessness. Each act against one another becomes more depraved than the next. While everyone in the bunker allows themselves to be overcome by desperation and lose their humanity, one survivor holds onto a thin chance for escape, even with no promise of salvation on the outside.

THE DIVIDE stars Lauren German (pictured below), Michael Biehn, Milo Ventimiglia, Courtney B. Vance, Ashton Holmes and Rosanna Arquette.
