Zombies vs. Robots adaptation Inherit the Earth gets Oscar-nominated writer

To date, all of screenwriter Craig Borten's work has been on dramas that were based on true stories. Since receiving an Academy Award nomination for his first produced screenplay DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, Borten has co-written THE 33, which is about the 2010 Chilean mining accident, and set up THE HUNT FOR EL CHAPO, about the capture of drug cartel leader Joaquin Guzman.

The writer is now taking a departure from real world tales, and what a departure it is.

Borten has signed to do a rewrite on INHERIT THE EARTH, Sony's adaptation of the IDW comic book series ZOMBIES VS. ROBOTS. Oren Uziel and J.T. Petty wrote previous drafts of the screenplay.

Created by Chris Ryall and Ashley Wood, the comic book has the following synopsis:

...a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies has only one chance at recovery – a team of robots that must protect and clone a lone surviving human baby. They just need to do this amidst the endless hordes of zombies who have been driven rabid by their frustration at inedible bots and their lust to eat the one living brain left on the planet.

Andrew Adamson (THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE) is set to direct the film, with Circle of Confusion and Platinum Dunes producing.

Borten is a surprising choice of writer for a project that sounds as bonkers as this one does, but I'm glad to see some kind of progress being made on it. I'm anxiously awaiting the day I can see this concept play out on the big screen. My only issue - why change the title to INHERIT THE EARTH? The title ZOMBIES VS. ROBOTS is what got me interested in the first place, and anyone who goes to see the movie is going to be there to see zombies fight robots. Don't be shy about it, wear that ZVR name proudly.
