THE LOWDOWN
I'm a big fan of the original 1978 I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE directed by Meir Zarchi and starring the lovely Camille Keaton; to me it was a unique blend of exploitation meets art film! I actually never bothered to tap Steven R. Monroe's 2010 remake of the same name. I was just not in the mood to see the same film all over again, but with SAW-ish like kills tagged to its ass. I know it owns, or so all my buds tell me, maybe I'll check it out someday. Moreover, I have a hard time sitting through some poor chick getting abused and raped for an hour or so these days. It's just not my idea of entertainment. Give me monsters, gives me ghosts, give me a slasher, give me animals gone wild, but lengthy realistic rape and hardcore abuse? Zzzzz. Boring. With that stabbed and sliced upwards, duty called, I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE 2 landed in my lap and being that it told its own story (as opposed to the remake of the original), I decided to give it a whirl. Did I regret it?

It was all right. Once again directed by Steven R. Monroe, I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE 2: SPIT HARDER (joke), looked high end and worthy of a theatrical release. Monroe ain't no fool behind the camera and he put out a gritty and visually engaging show. The cinematography (by ace Damian Bromley) was appropriately gloomy, the practical special effects mucho well done and the locations were milked for all they were worth. Story wise; the structure was simple enough: first half set-up, a surprise, dame gets raped and tortured - second half, she gets revenge on the dudes that treated her like cattle. THE CROW came to mind now and again as I watched this one. Although way more drawn out in terms of the initial crime, the ins and outs were similar and with the token makeup on, Jemma Dallender would have made for a solid female Crow! Get it done already Crow people! I want a female Crow! What's taking so long! I am getting off topic here, sorry about that, what was I talking about again...oh yeah! I Spit on Your Grave 2!

So yeah...ummm.... well, you bet your ass that nastiness was on the menu! It's not everyday that you see a girl get pissed on or have an electronic rod shoved her woo-hoo! I can't say I'm a better person for it. And of course it's not an I SPIT movie without a  castration, so get ready for that one boys, I felt it! Yeesh! Poor bastard. On the acting front, newcomer (to me anyways) Jemma Dallender was excellent as Katie, the poor girl that was put through the ringer. She was affable, intense, took chances in terms of her performance and the camera loved her. It was tough for me to see her get mistreated like that and that was the point. As for the secondary cast, they were convincing in their respective scumbags roles. I wanted them to die horrible and slow painful deaths, so mission accomplished lads! I hated you. Tag to that a fine score by Corey A. Jackson and an easy pace that never had me gazing at my navel looking for gold and you get a decent romp at he exploitation/torture Zoo.

So what was my boggle then? Well aside from me not getting my horror kicks in seeing a chick get mucho abused for an hour or so, this sequel did come with its fair share of plot holes, pretty big ones at that, and they took me out of the ride. I also loathed the priest and cop that “care” subplot which came off as corny and clumsily handled filler, solely there for the story to “cut-away” to something. The flick would have been better without it. And was it me or was the girl's actual revenge somewhat of a let down? I don't know man, after what she endured, I expected her to go to town even further on these clowns. Yup the film went all out with the rape/torture segment but didn't go as far with the revenge part. I would have done it the other way around. Lastly, our anti heroine could have used a bit more fleshing out and I wasn't fond of her knack of constantly repeating lines of dialogue that her assailants had said when they victimized her. Sure repeating a random line is fine, but here, they went too far with it and that took away from the intensity and the credibility of the situation. It just didn't feel "real".

All in all I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE 2 was a good sequel, flawed but still good. Will I ever watch it again? Nope. If there's a I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE 3: SPIT WITH A VENGEANCE, will I watch that one? Probably not. I think I've already had my fill of this franchise. Have you?
GORE
Do you really want me to spoil the kills here? I didn't think so. Lets just say that the uncut version didn't hold back on the red grub and it looked all practical to me, I didn't spot any CGI. Gorehounds will be pleased!
T & A
One pair of random titties aside, the nudity was courtesy of Jemma Dallender and I couldn't enjoy it - the context was wrong.
BOTTOM LINE
I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE 2 looked polished with potent production values on display. It was also slickly shot, showed off all kinds of well done practical gore and had one hell of a brave performance by Jemma Dallender. Kudos girl! Alas, the flick came with its fair share of plot holes, the revenge should have been more extreme than the crime, one subplot was useless and personally, seeing a broad get abused every which way from Sunday for an hour is not my idea of fun times. But hey, if you're into this horror subgenre (rape/torture schtuff), you should dig this one! It's well done for what it is!
BULL'S EYE
The script was written by Thomas Fenton (SAW IV) and Neil Elman.

Gemma Dallender played Isabelle on TV's Community (2012).

Steven R. Monroe was a camera assistant on the cult TV Show "Pee-wee's Playhouse"

Spot on review, Arrow. I agree that there was entirely waaaaay too much focus on the girl being abused, and not enough focus on the revenge aspect of the film. Other than that, it's still pretty well done despite being a straight-to-video release. Kudos to Jemma Dallender for taking on a very challenging role and doing it well. Also, I second the motion of a female Crow. That would be badass.
