Weitz back on Dark
About a year-and-a-half after he left the project, Chris Weitz is returning to direct THE GOLDEN COMPASS, the first film in the trilogy based on Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" novels. Weitz replaces Anand Tucker (SHOPGIRL), who replaced him and subsequently left the project due to creative differences. Weitz originally left the project because he didn't feel his would be able to tackle the complex technical issues that would surround the film. He was convinced to return by New Line now that a good deal of the pre-production work has been completed. Weitz, who holds a Masters in English Literature from Cambridge, wrote the script based on Pullman's novel. Should the first film be successful enough, New Line is hoping to shoot the second and third films, THE SUBTLE KNIFE and THE AMBER SPYGLASS, back-to-back. COMPASS will be New Line's most expensive film since the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. Production is scheduled to begin this fall with a November 2007 release planned.
