Ziyi Zhang (MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA) has signed a multi-picture deal with the Weinstein Co. that will begin with a starring role in a live-action version of MULAN. The story was made into a popular Disney film in 1998 but originated as a 1956 Chinese movie. The story follows a woman who disguises herself as a man to fight in the Chinese army. The second project in her deal is expected to be a remake of the classic Akira Kurosawa film, THE SEVEN SAMURAI (which was loosely remade into THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN in 1960). The films will be financed by Chinese millionaire David Dong and his Meridian Pictures, with MULAN being budgeted at $20 million. Zhang recently wrapped production on THE BANQUET, a loose adaptation of "Hamlet" that will hit America some time later this year. Production on MULAN is scheduled to begin next February.

I don't see how no one is freaking out about the fucking Seven Samurai remake. Signing a deal with Weinstein is so fucking stupid. She's such a good actress, but even more so when she isn't surrounded by a shitty huge american production. AND WHO THE FUCK WOULD WANT TO REMAKE SEVEN SAMURAI.

This is not good.

In English?
Please tell me that this movie will be in Chinese and not in English. Although her English has improved a bit, it was hard watching and believing her performance in Geisha because it looked like she had absolutely no clue what she was saying. Reading subtitles are so much better than watching a dubbed movie or watching a movie where the English is hard to understand and believe.

Mulan
Probably just a wording problem but it didn't "originate" as a 1956 movie. It's been a legend in Chinese history for centuries.
