Dark City sequel? Jun. 23, 2006

Dark City While it's debatable where in the lineage of best science fiction films Alex Proyas' DARK CITY lies, there's no denying that it rocks a tremendous amount of ass. And while there'd never really been any talk of a sequel to the film, Proyas himself had this to say when asked about it recently on his official site: "DC was hardly a smash hit at the box office so it is unlikely, if a sequel was made, they'd give me a huge budget to work with. So don't worry too much about that! I am more and more interested in the idea of a sequel, and who knows, after the special edition comes out, with everyone's support behind it, a sequel…maybe who knows…but I've already said too much." Let's hope he's not so diabolical as to tease us with this absolutely great news and not deliver. Don't do this to us, Proyas! In any case, what do you guys think about this? Where do you think the story would go? Does it have anywhere to go?

It could be amazing..

I believe it will be if it happens.

Of course, there's a lot of room in a lot of ways for it to suck extremely hard..

But this will be good.

Yes, and the Warchowskis will finally have something else to rip-off...This will ceratinly lead to another "Matrix" sequel that will be just like the "Dark City" sequel...but with alot of machine guns, Wire-Fu, and [link] from "Blade Trinity"...or prehaps the "Blade" tv show. At least the producers of "Blade" had a sense of humor about it and stole Trinity's name from "The Matrix" in order to number their 3rd film...an obvious swipe at the Warchowski Brothers infamous thieving!!!

Not sure where Dark City 2 could go plotwise but I would be extremely interested in seeing it get a great director and of course the return of Rufus Sewell

Edward Brock: The Wachowski Brothers, they wrote the Matrix script first. Wolvie: Yeah right!!! I've heard rumors for years that the Wachowski's wrote "Matrix" first...and I've also heard rumors that "Dark City" and the film "The Thirteenth Floor" were written first. The fact is, "Dark City" was out there before those two other movies...and quite frankly was the better film. And with the Wachowski's ripping off the Bullet Time Effect, the Wire Work, the Dark Sun Glass, the Dark Trench Coats and Black Suit look from "Blade", trust me...if they'd rip "Blade" off, they'd have no problem ripping-off a film like "Dark City" which, unlike "Blade", hardly nobody saw!!!!

Sure, they probabily stole a couple of shots from Dark City but I can't understand how can someone say that The Matrix stole its core from Dark City when the Wachowskis started developing the movie in the early 90's and there are drafts available out there from as early as April '96. Besides, they started shooting the movie in early '98 so that nmeans that they started pre-production at tops in mid-'97. As for Blade, I'm not even gonna go there.

As for DC, I adore the 1st movie and I'm intrigued with whatever direction Proyas will take.

I've never been this exited for a rumor ever (well more of a tease actually) Im hip to the mere possibility of a sequel, I dont condone sequelitys, but with great stories and great directors, I tend to see more greatness. Dont compare Proyas to the Washout-skis, compare him to Sam Raimi, to Brian Singer, James Cameron even, those are people who knew what to do with sequels (lets hope Gore Verbinski is in there also).

I want the filming world to acknowledge Dark City. I want more strangers, more tunning, more dark deco and anacronism, spirals, underworlds, fake memories, friggin city floating in outer space.

PS-I forgot to mention the Wachowski Brothers ripping-off Blade's trench coat look, and the sun glass worn by "Blade" and those worn by the underground vampire community-see the asian gangster club scene for reference. Even the wire work thing came from "Blade", although it was only used in a limited fashion in the movie. Look, we all know that the Chinese have been using wire work for years, so it was nothing new...but in American films...yes, it was the new thing!!! That said, no wonder why Wachowski Brother No. 1# and Wachowski Brother No. 2# are so quiet these days...well, besides one of the brothers supposedly being in the midst of having a sex change...and Dating a Dominatrix, I mean. And BTW way, that isn't a joke, according to reports. No...besides doing weird ass things in their personal lives, alledgedly
...they, The Wachowskis, are obviously hiding in the shadows waiting for the look and inspiration of the next somebody else's innovative muse of a movie so they can rip that off too!!!

Hell yes!!!..."Dark City" was a great movie and clearly "The Matrix" ripped it off...after adding some Wire-Fu and lots and lots of machine guns. But to anybody with a trained eye, you can tell that "The Matrix" stole its core from "Dark City". That's why the "Matrix" sequels sucked so bad...The Wachowski Brothers didn't have a sequel to "Dark City" to study and rip-off, so they had to try and make up their own stuff...and let's not forget them ripping off the bullet time effect from "Blade" or the digital puppets CGI from the Vampire Ninja sequences in Blade 2...an effect that was ripped for the Burly Brawl sequences in "Matrix: Reloaded".

Yeah, when it comes to the Warchowski Brothers coming up with their own material, in this case, story wise, we can now see how badly those two cross dressing nit wits did when they had to think for themselves..."The Matrix" sequels, collectively amount to the new "Plan From Outer Space"...And that's terrible!!! At least "Plan 9 From Outer Space" was funny
...unintentionally so...but still, that was its saving grace. The last two "Matrix" films just sucked!!!

So now, let's see what Alex Proyas had to have been planning for a "Dark City" sequel...I'm sure it's gonna rock. And with Keifer Sutherland now looked upon as a major star...this thing could be big!!!

I loved Dark City, but this to me is a bad, BAD idea. Very comparable situation to the first Matrix IMO. Yes, there are storylines you *could* expand on, but why do you feel the need to mess with a movie that ended so well? In doing a sequel, you're forced to also come up with bigger and "better" ideas about the universe in which it's based, which if they go wrong (a la the Matrix sequels) can also ruin your perception of the first film.

Of course this is all just my two cents! Hopefully I'm wrong and Proyas proves to me that it's just the Wachowskis who f'ed up the Matrixs (Matrices??), not the principle of it all!

I am so for a sequel to this film. Honestly, after it had finished, it felt to me like they had meerly opened the door to a world of stories. Almost like it was the first chapter of a longer series, but at the same time, could easiliy be a 1 shot film. I say yes, there needs to be a sequel just for the continuation of a great story.

I think that this is a great idea! Why not? There are many routes that the writers could take in making a sequel, I am worried about the new technology of films today that might ruin the gritty feel that made DC so good. I'm just glad that Jennifer Connely is still ridiculously hot. No one could ruin that. No one.

it ended with rufus sewel (sp?) having total control over the matrix, er-uh... i mean, dark city.

But its still an ant farm, right? So maybe part two would be about getting home, or where ever these people were taken -- Like the first generation of abductees was probably from the fifties, based on the production design/stylistic of the city. But how many generations lived in the dark city?

It could have been thousands of years, and by now, earth could be a whole different place.

I wouldn't want to see the stylistic change drastically and become "i, robot 2" or anything, but I like the idea that they wouldn't be content with the ant farm, and that as a twist the ultimate destination would have a planet of the apes-like twist..
