After his work directing two indie movies, George Clooney is moving away from CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND territory and into something a little more mainstream - a Renee Zellweger romantic comedy. Sound a little strange for an A-list, Oscar-winning actor/Oscar-nominated director? A bit, but Clooney will put his own spin on the genre as the movie is set in the 1920s and also follows the rise of professional football. The movie is called LEATHERHEADS and follows an aging football player who convinces a college star to dropout and join a pro league. The project has been around for some time and Clooney himself was attached to star with Steven Soderbergh directing after they finished OUT OF SIGHT. In addition to directing, Clooney is rewriting the script but he is not expected to star with Zellweger. Universal is looking to start production on the film next spring. Clooney is currently filming OCEAN'S 13 and has THE GOOD GERMAN and MICHAEL CLAYTON set for release later this year.
Extra Tidbit:
Jon Favreau was also at one time attached to direct LEATHERHEADS.
