WEEKEND BOX-OFFICE

Jagshemash...again!!!

Despite getting sued by pretty much everyone in the film at this point (don't these clowns sign waivers allowing the filmmakers to use their footage in the film in the first place?), BORAT finished atop the box-office for a second weekend in a row, with another big haul of $29M, raising its 10-day total to close to $70M. The top three movies at this week's box-office were actually the same as last weekend, despite the fact that 4 new movies opened wide this weekend.

The film that opened in the least theaters, Christian Bale's HARSH TIMES was the only one that didn't manage to crack the top 10 (it only made $1.9M), and yet, even it managed to beat Russell Crowe's abysmal $1,827/per theater average with A GOOD YEAR, a film that was as undermarketed as any other film that I've seen this year (well, other than BANDIDAS and IDIOCRACY, two other Fox films), and finished in 10th place in its first week out.

Sarah Michelle Gellar's THE RETURN didn't manage much better with an 8th place opening and only $5M in its first weekend of release, while Will Ferrell's STRANGER THAN FICTION made some decent dough in 4th place and $14M in receipts. Both SANTA CLAUSE 3 and FLUSHED AWAY managed to maintain their #2 and #3 spots respectively from last week, dropping only about 10% of their audiences since then. It seems as though these two films will have "legs" over the coming holiday weekends.

Next weekend sees the addition of one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year in CASINO ROYALE, as well as yet another animal-based animated flick entitled HAPPY FEET (yawn) and a comedy called LET'S GO TO PRISON starring Wesley Snipes (that last part is a joke). So how much moolah do you think CASINO ROYALE will make in its first weekend out? VOTE HERE!!
