Strike Back below!
by: Jonathan Frey Dec. 4, 2006

There have apparently been various rumors floating around about this at some time or another, but Moviehole is reporting that they've received fairly legit word from "someone up the food chain" that '80s classic SHORT CIRCUIT, a film that offers immeasurable pleasure, is on deck for a remake. While John Badham, the original's director, doesn't seem poised to return, some of the other talent involved could possibly take part. I'm not sure who exactly that would mean (Ally Sheedy? Fisher Stevens!? Guttenberg!!!??), but my guess is that Number 5 voicer Tim Blaney is the most likely to be involved. So what do you think of all this? Strike back and give us some... hold on, let me just shield myself with this umbrella... INPUT!

Source: Moviehole.net

Extra Tidbit: The chant sung by Los Locos, the vicious gang that dupes Number 5 in SHORT CIRCUIT 2, goes as follows: "Los Locos kick your ass! Los Locos kick your face! Los Locos kick your balls into outer space!"

Hmmm...
I can see how this remake could work...see, it's like Short Circuit, only that Johnny 5 is the precursor to the Terminator unit T100!

See, this way you can remake two movies for the price of one and not have it be the exact same plot.

Little Johnny 5 grows up in the slums of the Skynet Terminator Manufacturing Plant out in Receda, and all he wants to do is destroy...

Little Johnny 5 grows up in the slums of the Skynet Terminator Manufacturing Plant out in Receda, and all he wants to do is destroy all humans...that is until he's hit with a bolt of lightning and then he wants to party down with all the humans that survived Judgement Day.

I think it would work!!

NO MORE REMAKES
If you want to make a new movie about the same character or type of storyline that's fine. Well as long as you don't fuck up the original storyline in the process. But to keep making remakes is just stupid. I can kind of see making remakes of say Sinbad because now we have the technology to make everything look more real, and it would really be a completely different experience watching the ...

But to keep making the same movie over and over is just stupid.

I wonder when they'll start making remakes of the remake.

I wouldn't mind this so much if it was a sequel to the originals, but a remake is pretty damn stupid.

Remake? Bad idea. Sequel? Maybe. Bring back Guttenberg and have Johhny 5 fight an Honda ASIMO robot and an army of Sony QRIOs and AIBOs and lead an army of those Robosapien toys that he rescues from toy stores around New York. And he could find an R2D2 toy at the toy store and Johnny 5 would think it's really R2 and act like "hey, where you been R2 old buddy?" Otherwise the only story I c...

Otherwise the only story I can think of is having to bring Johhny 5 out of storage because he's the only computer that can interface with some old military satellite and he'll have to go into space to fix it. I just don't see how you can remake this though.

OMG!
Didn't they already remake this a couple of years ago but replaced faithful Number 5 with a stealth fighter and instead of becoming nice became pure evil, and using its awesome stealth powers tried to destroy countries? I think it was called The Plane Which Turned Evil, anyway, Short Circuit rocks, poor Number 5, they better not turn him into a badass robot which flies or anything.

Frak y'all!

Johnny Five is alive! I just had to go to the ends of the earth not too long ago to get a copy of Short Circuit 2 - which in a lot of ways was superior to part one. Yes... despite it being the worst job of disguising Toronto as New York.

I'm thinking Johnny 5 needs a total system upgrade. From "500 megabytes online" to a couple of terrabytes at least. <...

If they throw some decent money at this, and go with a director like William Dear or somebody else who can do light, funny, family stuff with a touch of drama - then this could turn out fantastic.

Grrrrrr....
Why, why? It wasn't even made THAT long ago!! The original is a great, stupid, funny, 80's movie. This needs to NOT happen! Johnny Five needs to stay in the Robot Graveyard with Robocop.

I just don't understand why it is so hard for Hollywood to come up with original ideas. Remaking films that were good in the first place (i.e. The Birds, etc) seems like a cop out. I personally would be embarrassed to say to someone "You know, I can't think of anything else to make a movie about, so I'll just make someone else's movie over again".

Brownface
I loved Short Circuit when it came out. But on the other hand, I was nine! I'm sure it's still funny-bad now, but Fisher Stevens in brownface is pretty offensive nowadays. Stupid producers, when will you stop this?

Mr. Johnny Five!
They used to show part two on CINEMAX every day! It was terrible, but the indian guy (who actually was in part 1) was funny. I'm in if he makes a cameo.

Who doesn't want to see their favorite movie characters comeback to life and make something new, the originals were great movies. But I think this is one instance where an attempt to reprise the characters and the plot is going to fall short.

Meh...
I think I remember chuckling occasionally at the first movie. I'm pretty sure the 2nd one blew.

And while Ally Sheedy turned my crank when I was a teen, I'm not so interested in seeing her 20 years later.

My vote: Sequels 20 years in the works are equally bad as remakes. Hollywood, stop dipping into the same old well.
