Sony has signed a deal to bring popular Konami videogame METAL GEAR SOLID to the big screen. The project has been in the works for some time and at the 2006 E3 convention creator Hideo Kojima said a film was underway and that a contract had been signed. Kojima was jumping the gun though as negotiations between Sony and Konami have continued since then with the deal only now becoming final. Michael De Luca (BOOGIE NIGHTS) is producing the film for Sony, which hopes the film can spwan a franchise. The video game franchise has been around since 1987 when it first debuted in Japan and was later adapted for the original Nintendo system. The game saw a comeback almost 10 years later when METAL GEAR SOLID, named after main character Solid Snake, debuted on Playstation One. There have been two sequels to SOLID and a fourth, "Guns of the Patriots" is due soon. No writer or director is attached to the film yet and it's unclear how much creative control Konami and Kojima will have over the film.

Extra Tidbit: Uwe Boll had expressed interest in directing METAL GEAR SOLID but Konami said emphatically that they would never work with Boll.

WOLFGANG Should Direct
They don't even need to make a new story line; the story lines in the games are so good, you could emulate them, and have a great movie. problem is, your alienating your videogame crowd, who probably would like to see a NEW story.

the snakes charector design of that game was based on beihn from terminator and big boss in the game was based on sean connery with an eye patch.

even though a movie would be bad ass in the right hands and i cant wait to see it i will stick with just the games cuss they are cinimatic enough and the story is a hellova lot better.

Dude...their right. Biehn looks SO much like the guy on the cover there. For casting now....worst case would be Stuart Townsend, but I'm hoping for Adam Baldwin, Josh Holloway, or (maybe) Nathan Fillion.

I don't think Kurt Russel should ever again involve himself in a film that has a character named SNAKE, period. As for the character of SNAKE I could live with Viggo Mortensen in the role. As long as Uwe Boll isn't involved, I'm in.

I'm still thinking that the best (modern) choice for Solid Snake would be Hugh Jackman, although naturally Kurt Russell in his prime would've been the best. Maybe they could make him Big Boss or something. That would be cool.

I think Kojima hinted at Viggo Mortensen at E3, not officially but as his favorite for the part. I could be wrong though

Great News, but Worst Case Scenario
This is gonna be great. MGS is Kojima's baby and he's not gonna let this one stick up cineplexes.

Besides, worse comes to worst, never forget: the making of the movie isn't going to destroy all your copies of the games. If it turns out badly, just forget about it and play the games. Done.

Well since the character was based off of Snake from Escape from N.Y. they should just use Kurt Russell...but that would be confusing

Bale
Is the only one to play Snake. Biehn would be good but I would much rather have Christian Bale as Snake. He'd be amazing.

I think Kojima will be heavily involved and that means it will most likely not only be the best videogame movie, it'll be an amazing movie all around.

I am Skeptikal too.. The Magic about this Game its an [link] so now you would just have the Movie.. could be nice but it would not be the same..I mean, Metal gear as a Game did always blow my mind of in Cinematic Aspect. But I agree for Michael Biehn as Snake.. perfect Choice.

Being a die-hard MGS fan, I'm kinda skeptical of a Metal Gear movie. After all, those games already pretty much movies with gameplay in them. And just take a look back at all the video game movies in the past. We'll just have to wait and see.

"Michael Biehn should play solid snake! shit he was only depicted as solid snake on the cover of metal gear."

Is that true? If so, that's awesome, because Michael Biehn is only one of my favorite actors (hence me being psyched he's in Grindhouse). Anyway, I trust Kojima, and I definitely have faith in this movie. The games are pretty much already interactive movies.

LMAO, they won't let Uwe work on it. That's like saying, let's keep an extra can of RAID incase Uwe gets near us. I'm just glad people are finally seeing how shitty he is and just DON'T GIVE HIM MONEY TO MAKE CRAP! I think 90% of the people who come to this site could make better films with the amount of money that wanker has used.

Im excited for this, but it would be muy stupido if Kojima did not get any creative control. This is like his kid, and the games have always been rather cinematic.

Whoa!!!!
This is great news. Anyone who has not played this series needs to do so. MGS 2 and 3 are two of the most involved, beautiful games of all time. If Shigeru Myamoto is the Spielberg of gaming, (the guy who produces Mario) then Kojima is the Ridley Scott.
