THUNDERCATS was one of those spastic rubbish cartoons that kids in the 80s ate up like sugary cereal. And like the result of a Lucky Charms/Boo Berry bender, it's being regurgitated in a colorful mess for today's youth (and creepy fans of Cheetara slashfic) to experience.

With Nostalgia Permit in one hand and rendering software in the other, videogame guy Jerry O'Flaherty will make his directing debut on Warner Bros.' computer-animated feature film about feline heroes. O'Flaherty, an art director who worked on games such as GEARS OF WAR and COMMAND & CONQUER, will bring the CG adventures of Lion-O and his comrades (and that annoying little asshole Snarf) to theaters, thereby helping the environment by recycling garbage.

The garish original series followed the survivors of dying planet Thundera as they established a new life on Third Earth while dealing with cackling sorcerer Mumm-Ra and his anthropomorphic henchmen. Disparaging comments about disposable cartoons aside, the continued popularity -- and profitability -- of all the exhumed 80s matter (TRANSFORMERS, TMNT, GI JOE, VOLTRON, HE-MAN, etc. etc.) is undeniable, so we should probably prepare for the immediate resurgence of SILVERHAWKS, THE MIGHT ORBOTS and BRAVESTARR.

Source: Variety

Extra Tidbit: The THUNDERCATS battled several villains with porn-ready names, including Driller, Tug Mug, Red-Eye, Ram Bam and Topspinner. The slashfic practically writes itself.

For the ladies...
...they should do a big screen addaption of JEM & THE HOLOGRAMS. If they fill it with enough hot chicks I'd probably go see it. Imagine: Scarlett Johansen as JEM. Couldn't be any worse than Spice World.

HEY!
HEY, THE SILVERHAWKS ROCKED, DAVE!!! As did the Thundercats, and it's great that they're going cgi instead of live action, because that would have sucked a fat one. And as soon as I read the word "porn-ready", the only 80s cartoon I could think of was Jem...

I say bring on Inhumanoids. How many people remember that one?

Then after that, M.A.S.K. Say it with me kids, “CODENAME: RHINO!!”

To top it off, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors. This series probably had the greatest 80's rock intro out of all of them.

As a side dish, Centurions.

I'M not too young to remember that the Thundercats was a terrible show. I liked it when it was on, but I also liked Silver Spoons and wore parachute pants. It didn't take long--maybe 2 years (i.e. the lifespan of the show)--before kids realized that it was crap and it was canceled.

But hey, they can only improve on it, right? Oh wait, nevermind. Exhibit A: Transformers.

Stop editorializing
Dave Davis,
I think you may be too young to realize at one point in time Thundercats was the shit. Along with Voltron, GI Joe and Transformers that was what all the boys in 4th grade were talking about.

If you're in your early 30's like i am then seeing these things made into big budget movies is like a dream come true.

Whatever, I don't know what's taking studios so long to realize that, with all of this 80s nostalgia occurring, they should just greenlight a Snorks movie.

I know we all enjoy colorful commentary, but can we try to not be so subjective in writing articles? I know this is a thing that has been bugging me and a lot of other people recently.

Anyway, I'm excited to see what they do with this.

I generally prefer to watch all the '80s characters in their inevitable return on "Robot Chicken." After all, what do kids remember more, the characters? Or their toy alter egos?
