Marvel's tenacious vigilante THE PUNISHER is returning to the big screen, with a new face and a different city of criminal goons to assault. And now we know when he'll open fire.

Lionsgate has scheduled the not-really-a-sequel PUNISHER: WAR ZONE for release on September 12, 2008. A month that used to be a dumping ground, September has turned into a popular time for genre material (the UNDERWORLD movies and RESIDENT EVIL sequels found audiences in similar positions).

The new flick comes from director Lexi Alexander (GREEN STREET HOOLIGANS) and stars ROME's Ray Stevenson as the new Frank Castle. In the movie, the New York-based Punisher is hunted by a police task force and an army of thugs led by the scarred psychopath Jigsaw (Dominic West). Doug Hutchinson, Colin Salmon, Wayne Knight, Dash Mihok and Julie Benz also star.

Extra Tidbit: The movie pulls from various Garth Ennis PUNISHER comic arcs, along with whatever the multitude of screenwriters threw into the mix.

I love the dude from Rome, and even though I am a true jane fan, he just didnt do it for me. That and Travolta......need i say more. Hopefully this will bring comic book series back to life

I'm leaning toward apartment42's line of thinking. Titus Pullo was one of the most likable characters in "Rome," and "Hooligans" was pretty badass, and all that makes up for that they decided not to use Thomas Jane, who I did like even if I thought Travolta was a waste. Stevenson's got a fairly imposing build, which should work for the character, while Dominic West has shown he can do both an A...

Stevenson's got a fairly imposing build, which should work for the character, while Dominic West has shown he can do both an American accent ("The Wire") and play a full-on asshole ("300"). At the very least I'm hoping it'll be as good as "Crank," a September release I legitimately enjoyed.

Not Looking Forward To It
Without Thomas Jane it's going to be crap. I still have hope that perhaps one day he'll return to the franchise and they'll start where they left off with the film he was in. I have absolutely no interest in this new one at all.

Cool news. Just fyi, and not that it really matters at this point in time, but a few other sites are reporting that it's September 12th.

I like Ray Stevenson, was fond of Green Street Hooligans and would really like to finally see a gritty Marvel flick ... so for now, I'm hip to this.

ummm....i still consider september a dumping ground. underworld sucked and the resident evil movies sucked harder. money doesn't make a movie good....they still sucked balls. as for this movie, well, until i see something, i'm reserving judgement on it.

Underworld
Am I mistaken in thinking that the Underworld sequel came out in January? Perhaps the first one came out in September, but not both...
