Star Trek delayed

Strike Back below!
by: Dave Davis Feb. 13, 2008

It seems as though the USS Enterprise has suffered a warp core breach, or needs to stay in space dock for nacelle refitting, or has run low on dilithium crystals, or whatever TREK-ism you prefer (I just exhausted my supply).

Either way, JJ Abrams' revamped STAR TREK feature won't be hitting theaters until 2009. Originally planned for release in December of this year, Paramount has shifted it to open next summer's movie season on May 9, where it is currently uncontested.

The more cynical among us might find it coincidental that the move came the same day as the writers' strike ending, implying that the script might still require some attention...

Extra Tidbit: Kickboxing champ Lucia Rijker reportedly plays a Romulan officer in the flick. Thanks to 'Tump' for that tip!

I like to throw in my two cents
On one hand I was looking forward to seeing this so-called "reinvention" movie

On the other, the delay might be a good thing. Scrap the script, director, and cast, and make either a DS9 or Voyager movie.

And throw out the NASA coach to make everything seem "authentic", who needs that in a ST film anyway?????!!!!!!

reshoots...
Like an earlier poster said, Abrams wanted to make some changes to the script while the WGA was striking, and couldn't. My money's on reshoots as the reason for putting the release date back to 2009.

No, they want to release it in the summer.
If you read the Variety article, the only reason for the shuffle is because they thought the film would do better in an uncontested date during the summer. I don't think J.J. has much to do with LOST anymore, aside from producing and maybe writing the odd episode.

Lost?
The timing of this could also be related to Lost, as Abrams will probably have to direct a lot of attention that way with the strike over...

Hadn't Abrams previously stated that he wished he could tinker the odd line or two in his script, but couldn't 'cause of the strike?

So, yeah, it's probably reshoots (and hopefully they are, in fact, [link] not studio-enforced).
