Extra, which would never opportunistically sensationalize a celebrity story, is claiming that former funnyman turned fat-suited embarrassment Eddie Murphy is thinking about hanging up the grotesque latex and retiring from movies.

Despite the recent menace of a possible Ratner-directed BEVERLY HILLS COP 4, Murphy apparently made this statement to the trash-TV entertainment show Extra: "I have close to fifty movies and it's like, why am I in the movies? I've done that part now. I'll go back to the stage and do standup." A shame, but perhaps it's for the best -- aside from the blip of DREAMGIRLS, we haven't seen the genuinely amusing and charismatic Eddie since, what, BOWFINGER? Only the charmless pod-person from METRO, HOLY MAN, SHOWTIME, I SPY, PLUTO NASH, etc... Retirement, huh?

This supposed exit coincidentally comes just before the arrival of his latest monstrosity MEET DAVE, which by all appearances is the cinematic equivalent to having millions of feces-tainted needles simultaneously thrust into every pore on your body.

Source: Extra

Extra Tidbit: Murphy also says he's looking for a woman with "just honesty and some other things." Those other things could quite conceivably be gravity-resistant breasts and the most awe-inspiring ass in the cosmos, maybe. Seems logical.

Dude, do anything apart from more Norbit, Dolittle style movies.

Call Walther Hill and beg him to write a screenplay for the both of you.

I saw him on....
... the Raw tour back in '89/90 and it was awesome laugh until you almost puke funny. I'd love to see him in concert again with new material.

As for movies, if he'd just do a damned adult oriented 'R' action / comedy, instead of these braindead kiddy flicks, he could be back on top in no time

i agree with murphy. the man is already a comic legend. its sad when the guy that had the most anticipated comedy of the summer now has the least anticipated. his standup is funny as shit. he should definatly get back to that.

THANK GOD
Murphy has no shame whatsoever. This is like a dream come true. I had to suffer through the Meet Dave trailer at Wall*E, and it was torture (although not nearly as bad as that chiuaua movie, which looks about as funny as the bataan death march).

In the grand scheme of things Murphy was/is a rare talent in comedy. So by all means, he should return to his roots, where the man is still pretty funny, even if his heyday of the early eighties is long gone. He should still be an amusing stage presence.

That needs to be on a poster NOW.

He shouldve retired after NORBIT. I hate to sound like a bleeding heart, but that was the equivalent of a modern minstrel show.

Yes. I completely agree. Retirement is your best option. Yes. Please. At least until you find your funny bones again. Until then, go away. Please.

Meet Dave? no thanks
All I can say is Murphy and Myers should thank their lucky stars for the shrek movies, b/c it looks like they'll be losing some comedy cred after this year.

Eddie Murphy was funny once, but his most recent movies have been the cinematic equivalent of Chinese water torture.

And about EM's preferences in women: penis optional.

It strikes me that Murphy's best roles ('Trading Places', 'Beverly Hills Cop', '48 HRS', et cetera.) were not roles written specifically for him.

That is, maybe he just needs to find a good, pre-existing script, instead of having them tailored for his increasingly dubious tastes?

And, IMHO, Ratner couldn't direct traffic, let alone a decent movie. How do you take ...

And, IMHO, Ratner couldn't direct traffic, let alone a decent movie. How do you take a great script, great cast...and, hell, great EVERYTHING, and still manage to churn out a movie that is, at best, not too bad (that'd be 'Red Dragon')? And I'll never forgive him for completely Schumachering the X-Men.

What about The Haunted Mansion 2?
I was hoping that would be the tentpole summer movie of 2009. Damn!

although, i would LOVE a new Beverly Hills Cop flick... directed by Ratner or not (Ratner gets alot of shit, but he makes entertaining flicks in my opinion) but if this means we may get a new Eddie Murphy Stand Up Special... than i say go for it dude, cuz he is one of the all time greatest stand ups!
