Strike Back below!
by: Mike Sampson Jul. 16, 2008

UPDATE - Yahoo! Movies has posted an official version of the trailer described below. You can stream it below or head to Yahoo! for some HD lovin'.

I, quite frankly, never cared much about Frank Miller's upcoming comic adaptation THE SPIRIT. Sure it has Scarlett Johansson and Eva Mendes and that's enough to get my interest piqued on some level but then again their participation didn't make THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL or GHOST RIDER any better. But now, I'm straight up dying to see THE SPIRIT because I can't believe how unbelievably bad it looks. Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh but this trailer doesn't jive with me one bit. It's so ridiculously over-the-top that I can hardly believe I'm watching it. If THE DARK KNIGHT is the one end of the spectrum that takes comic book movies super seriously, THE SPIRIT is on the waaay on the other end. Aside from getting douche chills just looking at the footage, the trailer itself is quite poorly cut together. It's almost as if they don't know how to sell this movie so all they've got left is pimping out the hot ladies. Or showing off Sam Jackson in Nazi regalia. Seriously. Pretty sure it will be shown off at Comic-Con and I can't wait to see what the reaction will be...

This looks like it could be a really interesting artsy film noir type movie or a horrible piece of crap. We shall see.

holy fuck-mothering christ batman!!!
this looks absolutely god awful. i've been of the opinion that Frank went off the deep end somewhere around Dark Knight Strikes Again, but this is the final proof. the man is lost to us now.

This looks awful. No film should be shot entirely over a green screen. In my opinion, it never works.

Okay, i finally caved and watched it..... wow, i really dont like this trailer, or where the movie seems to be headed, at all. and what the hell is Sam Jackson, or any of the characters for that matter, doing. this movie should not be about visual gags and over the top bad-acting-on-purpose humor. it is supposed to have that film noir feel to it with a touch of adventure and crime-drama. Every time something for The Spirit is put out there it looks less like Eisner.

And Miller has a funny idea of what "a full-color movie" is, as he calls this on his blog.

What genre does this fit into?
Seriously? It plays out more like an erotic thriller than film noir. Shouldn't the trailer be centering on the title character, or the villain, and not the peripheral girls? It feels like the technology of this film was wasted on a plotless Sin City clone. How about a trailer that tells us what the film is about. Isn't that the point of a trailer, to sell us on the film's main premise? I'm less...

Another terribly put together trailer. This looks awful! What the hell is Frank Miller smoking? Samuel L. Jackson looks ridiculous!

I thought it looked o.k. I like the style and the "comic book acting". Seems like it's already starting to become a fad to hate this movie, give it a chance until you see it people!

Having never even seen anything on The Watcher graphic novels, I was surprised to see when I picked one up at the library, how different the trailer looked from it. But I am still intrigued enough for now to give it a look.

First of all, aside from the name, this is NOTHING like The Spirit. It's Sin City with Spirit characters. Frank Miller has done groundbreaking work in the comics industry, but he puts out tons of crap too. He utilizes the "over-the-top" to mask the fact that he isn't good enough to do it any other way. The movie looks dreadful.

oh wow.
Totally disagree. I think it looks great. I agree the trailer looks a little poorly put together, rushed for comicon perhaps, but the content looks slick, retro, sin-city meets film noir meets anime. Beautiful babes, Samual L. Jackson, violence and nazis and style. Count be as excited, although I'm rather surprised to see the division over this. Seems likes something Joblo fans would eat up...

"Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh"
Yeah, you are. You talk about over-the-top but you extremely exaggerated the content of that trailer. There really wasn't anything that seemed out of place in a COMIC BOOK ACTION MOVIE BASED ON A GUY WHO COMES BACK FROM THE DEAD. I agree that The Dark Knight is going to set the bar for comic book films being taken seriously, but you don't have to use that ...

This trialer kinda makes me wanna pull a Michael Hutchence, and hang myself with a belt. The acting looks bad the style doesn't fit, It just doesn't make the ladies run, Sir. Not for me.

Where's the Originality?
For some reason, Frank Miller seems to believe that us Graphic Novel readers, want to see the black and white with detailed colors as the filming media. It was interesting to see it done with Sin City, but to just take another novel and do the exact same thing with it, is very un-creative. A graphic novel could be done in so many other forms that the fanboys/girls would love to see. So I say...

Well...
I think "The Spirit" looks SO overly stylized and SO overly poppy, that it actually looks entertaining. However, I will say (as I think it is irrefutable) that this is not "The Spirit" that Will Eisner would have necessarily wanted. Miller made it his own, but it isn't completely lacking of Eisner's spirit (pun un-intentional). I'll give it a shot, it looks like a fun, trashy flick.

Scarlett looks hot, and so does paz. it'll have some good looking sexy ladies bottom line.

I personally think, from the standpoint of someone who has never read The Spirit OR Sin City, but loved the hell out of the movie Sin City (hence, the average moviegoer), that this movie looks like a blast. It looks sexy, fun, and Samuel L. Jackson looks likes he's having a great time with his role. I think he loves playing batshit characters. Despite what anyone else says, I'm looking forward ...

Miller's gone weak in the writing department a long time ago. The man that created some of the greatest Batman, Daredevil, and, his own, Sin City stories is now over-indulging himself in cinema, but someone needs to remind him he's no Tarantino. He hasn't found a balance between substance and style, something most pros have yet to nail, and it shows he hardly knows what he's doing. He might be ...

He might be having a blast, good for him... but do that shit in your garage and post it on youtube. You're working on the Spirit douche-bag!! Sure, it's just a trailer, but this looks like a sloppy mess.

I honestly feel bad for Will Esiner's soul he's suppose to be enjoying heaven but Frank Miller just raped one of his greatest creation. I could have sworn Miller said this won't look like Sin City what a talentless director. He should stick to writing so he doesn't taint his own career anymore or more esp anyone else's.

it's striking, got great dames, crazy action
but can Miller direct? I see potential here, potential for disaster as well. But we see small pieces, in context it could be really groovy. I dig the cartoon style black border around samurai Jackson, the exaggerated roof top acrobatics, the ladies are grrreat.
They messed up with the trailer. Should have shown some sequence instead, to give us a taste of the story, the tone.

I don't normally judge a film by the trailer but....
this really does look like just another excuse to use the green-screen. Over-the-top stylizing and some rather clunky dialogue in the trailer. Doesn't bode well. Still...Scarlett Johansson. >.>
