by: Dave Davis Sep. 4, 2008

It was going to be a cop thriller featuring two heavyweight Hollywood talents, from CASINO ROYALE director Martin Campbell.

Now EDGE OF DARKNESS has shed a few pounds of fame. Robert DeNiro has bolted from the project shortly after filming commenced in Beantown, leaving star Mel Gibson without someone to grimace toward.

In his first lead role since SIGNS, Gibson plays a homicide detective investigating his own daughter's death, only to discover dark secrets involving corporations and the government, who dispatch an agent (formerly Bobby D.) to clean up the matter.

DeNiro's departure was described as due to the obligatory "creative differences" (just like actors go to hospitals and rehab for "exhaustion"). The movie is still filming, rearranging the schedule until a replacement can be procured. Writer William Monahan (THE DEPARTED) adapted the story from a 1985 BBC miniseries that Campbell directed. The great Danny Huston also stars.

Extra Tidbit: Who's a viable replacement for DeNiro? Jean Reno has some "cleaner" experience...

that kinda sucks.. since I recently watched the 4 Lethal Weapon flicks and completely forgot how much I dug them, and Gibson himself. Braveheart is one of my all-time favorite movies and Mel is a great actor. Once again, just like Tom Cruise, I am not effected in any way by what these people decide to do in their spare time. Just as long as they show up and give me bad ass performances I am ...

Too bad about De Niro; this had the making to me a nice low-key Gibson comeback project. I second whoever said Tommy Lee Jones; he seems like the best pick. Nicholson's too picky, and this is meant to be a two-star vehicle, so Morse and Reno are out. Freeman's my second choice.

Whoever they pick, they need some kind of dramatic heavyweight. Gibson's rep has suffered over the years, and even someone as washed-up as DeNiro could've still been great here. If Danny Huston weren't already cast, I'd think he wouldn't be the worst pick.

What actor does everyone want to see trading verbal (and physical?) blows with Mel Gibson?

This news absolutely sucks. And you know why? Because I, for one, was very much interested in seeing Mel Gibson and Robert DeNiro face off in a film. But now that's not going to happen.

I wonder why DeNiro ditched the film.

Anyway, I hope the replacement (I'm not going to bother to mention names of actors) can hold his own against Gibson.

Fine by me. I can't stand DeNiro as an actor. He's a great person, and I loved him in STARDUST, but to put him with Mel Gibson? No thanks.

Now Jean Reno with Mel Gibson...THAT would be awesome.

MORSE, NAO
I second the notion of David Morse, seriously, give the man some more work

Jean Reno, it would be too much like Leon for him imo, granted he's a freakin' legend, but i can't see him play this part.

I know he's not in the same league, but would be a great fit: David Morse
