No Rosemary's remake? Dec. 22, 2008

Michael Bay's production company Platinum Dunes has become the King of the Horror Remake (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, AMITYVILLE HORROR, FRIDAY THE 13th), but even they may have their limits.

We just recently heard they returned their proposed remake of NEAR DARK to the casket (for the moment), and now it sounds like their intended update of Roman Polanski's chilling masterpiece ROSEMARY'S BABY is getting stuffed back into the womb.

As Dunes producer Brad Fuller tells Collider: "We went down that road and we even talked to the best writers in town and it feels like it might not be do-able. We couldn’t’ come up with something where it felt like it was relevant and we could add something to it other than what it was so we’re now not going to be doing that film."

So Mia Farrow's demonic fetus is safe for the moment. The creepy 1968 original film (based on a novel by Ira Levin) starred John Cassavetes as an ambitious New York actor whose desire for fame and fortune leads to a devious trade for his wife's reproductive ability. Which is a totally reasonable trade in the scheme of things.

Extra Tidbit: Fear not -- Platinum Dunes is still planning to repackage THE BIRDS and NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET for your memory-replacing pleasure.

One less remake of a flawless classic! I still can't believe RoboCop is in the works! Friday & Chainsaw were the type of horror films that NEEDED a reboot because they were so popular, but very low-budget. Rosemary's Baby featured big stars, a great director, a nice budget and won Oscars! What does a remake achieve? Nothing. Give some down and out filmmakers the money to make their original feature - there are plenty out there Hollywood!

Now if we can just get Hollywood to take this road with all the other unecessary remakes and we might finally be getting somewhere.
