Who is Green Lantern?

Strike Back below!
by: Mike Sampson Feb. 27, 2009

As much as we'd all like a third BATMAN movie to be the next DC superhero film to make it to theaters, it just doesn't look like that's gonna happen. Instead THE GREEN LANTERN is on the fast track at Warner Bros. (with a December 17, 2010 release already set) and casting is already underway. No one has been cast just yet but Latino Review is reporting that a number of actors were already offered the part - and subsequently turned it down. They're reporting that Ryan Gosling, Sam Worthington and Emile Hirsch were all offered the role of Hal Jordan and all turned down the part. First of all...Emile Hirsch?! He's a great actor but isn't he a little short to play a superhero? In any event, Latino also reveals the next candidate that WB and director Martin Campbell are looking at: Anton Yelchin. The star of the upcoming blockbusters STAR TREK and TERMINATOR SALVATION is being eyeballed to lead his first film. Now he's not much taller than Emile (just about two inches taller) and frankly I don't dig the choice at all. Again, great actor, just not who I'd envision to play Green Lantern (unless they're turning Green Lantern into some kind of SPIDER-MAN/high school origin). What do you think of these choices? Who would you recommend?

Source: Latino Review

Extra Tidbit: Emile Hirsch? Seriously?

I dunno
I'm more interested in the Green Lantern: First Flight animated movie coming out than the live action version. I think some of these guys are fine actors, but I don't see any of them playing Hal Jordan. Nathan Fillion's name has been tossed about, but he doesn't seem cocky enough for it.

Oh, and the flying dude from "Heroes" is Nicholas D'Agosto from the recent FIRED UP. He wouldn't be a good choice. Doesn't look it and couldn't act it. Kinda like asking anyone right now what the name of the actor who played THE SPIRIT was, yannow?

F*ck it, here are my 2 pennies. Shawn Hatosy could pull off the acting for the character, dry but not emotionless. Get Peter Sarsgaard a personal trainer and whip his body into shape and he could do it too. I also think (posthumously) that Brad Renfro could have done it. Or if you want to go badass but without acting talent, Scott Caan.

There... there's some different names for ya.

I'm sick of hearing
Jenson Ackles he looks terrible for the part and I wouldn't want to see him playing Cap who is my favorite superhero either. Fillion looks much better for the part but I'm sick of hearing his name too. How about Eric Bana? Or Patrick Wilson for either GL or Cap I can somehow see him as either; but I prefer Eric Dane for Cap. The guy from Angel? No thanks.

I'd say Jenson Ackles, but I want him for Captain America instead.

I'd say Ryan Gosling is PERFECT, but he turned it down so my next choice would the flying dude from Heroes. He was mentioned earlier. just cant spell his name. He already has experience with heroes, he can act, and he looks the part. Just give him blond hair.

i'd say...
...Matthew Fox, he's tall and I could see him as the character, also...why are they looking at younger actors for the part? you'd think they would be looking for older actors to play the chacater, just like Christian Bale for Batman, I think Matthew is a good candidate to play Captain America as well.

Damon is at least the right age, close enough in the look, has the acting ability and is a mega A lister. Realistically speaking from a critic and commercial standpoint he's probably the best choice. And if Christian Bale can play Batman and John Connor, Damon can play Jason Bourne and Green Lantern.

Heck, I think I recall him saying he would've considered playing kirk in Star Trek if the script was good enough back in the day so why not a kick ass character like Hal Jordan and Green Lantern?

Hopefully Affleck wouldn't talk him out of it after his experience with Daredevil.

BTW its cool seeing a lot of people chipping in on this one. GL is one of the coolest characters that deserves to be done right!

I would say Ryan Reynolds. But I was disappointed by his part in Blade Trinity since he was playing a buffon more than a Nightstalker. I'll wait to see how he plays Deadpool in X-Men Origins Wolverine. If he plays like I hope he will, then I choose him. He would be closer to the Hal Jordan from DC: The New Frontier. Movie geeks know the story from the Justice League The New Frontier DVD.

Josh Duhamel(Win a date with Tad Hamilton?), Emile Hirsch(Speed Racer?) Anton Yelchin(the next Kyle Reese?) These are the best you can come up with?? You forgot to mention Michael Cera! Or Jay Baruchel. Jeez come on people. What about Jake Gyllenhaal(the obvious casting, cause he has yet to nab a costume)? Go with an unknown.

No Hal Jordan? Casting a younger guy like Emile Hirsch and Anton Yelchin screams Kyle Rainer to me. I don't want to see a Kyle movie, Kyle is my least favorite lantern. I really hope they decide to make the movie about Hal Jordan, and I also hope they cast a 35 year old man instead of a 20 year old kid.

NO to John Stewart.
If you are doing a Green Lantern movie you don't skip Hal Jordan and go straight to John Stewart. Hal Jordan is the Green Lantern most associated with the title and not having him in it would be a slap in the face to fans.

Will Smith as John Stewart. Or that dude from the last couple of seasons of NYPD Blue, but I was hoping they would grab him up for a Luke Cage flick. Maybe the dude playing NightOwl as Hal Jordan. Make a Corps movie, merchandise the shit out of it. Gives options for sequels and takes the super hero genre into outer space, something new.

I do like the idea of Tom Cruise but he is like 46 now so it might be a little late for that.

I'm surprised that so many actors turn down superhero movies. Emile Hirsch would not have worked for this, but why did Gosling turn it down? After films like TDK, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man, you would think that actors would find it respectable to do a comic book movie

But Anton Yelchin? Hell no. Why not cast Ben Affleck and call it a day, if they really want to mess up with a promising project??

WB seemed to move in the right direction - so far. If they really want to pick someone from Abrams' teenybopper Trek movie, at least cast Chris Pine or Karl Urban. But Yelchin? C'mon Hollywood!!!

Ryan Gosling is a great actor I would love to see in a Superhero role, the other two choices are lame.

Maybe for Kyle Raynor.....but Hal Jordan?? Not even close. honestly, I can't even think of someone to play Jordan.....how bad is that. I'm sure there is someone out there but off the top of my head...no one.

How about Josh Duhamel?

Seriously?!
These are all awful choices....haven't DC/WB learn't that they should cast an older actor. Emile Hirsch? Was I off to consider Matt Damon when I heard about this movie?
