C'mon Hollywood #199

... stop with the bad concert movies!
by Sturdy
What the hell is Disney doing with these concert “movies” (it kills me to call them movies)? I thought we had a flash in the pan with HANNAH MONTANA/MILEY CYRUS: BEST OF BOTH WORLDS CONCERT TOUR, but then we’re hit with JONAS BROTHERS: THE 3D CONCERT EXPERIENCE. Has the recession hit Disney so hard that they’re forced to turn kiddie-concerts into movies? Do kids actually appreciate these movie-concerts? If you’ve seen either of these “movies” and you feel that they’re crowning achievements in filmmaking and I’m way off, then please let me know.

I’ll let you write your own inappropriate captions.
Hopefully, we can all agree that most adults aren’t going to get anything out of these films and with the disappointing box-office figures for the Jonas Brothers, it seems that kids aren’t that interested either. But don’t get fooled that the less than stellar opening will dissuade Hollywood from picking another cheesy band and giving them their own concert movie. I think the only question now is when are the latest rounds of American Idol rejects going to get their own movie (again) and when is Nickelodeon going to jump on the bandwagon and factory-make their own annoying pop star.

These guys should be spending their puberty years stuffed in gym lockers, not in theaters.
Maybe this is just part of my ongoing quest to rid the world of children, or at least confine them to a tiny island until they’re old enough to vote. But the biggest problem I have with these “movies” is that they’re not really movies at all. They’re concerts. You can’t just set up a camera in front a musician and call it a movie. It’s still a concert, it just happens to be captured on film. And why the hell are they putting this shit in 3D? Do people really want to see musicians attack them in a theater?

What exactly is there in a concert to merit having it in 3D?
And I’m not sure I would feel any better about this if the filmed concerts were with people or groups that actually had talent. I would definitely be more interested if it was Bob Dylan or The Killers, but even then, I don’t think I’d bother going to see it in a theater. However, the fact that its Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers makes it that much more sickening. You know that in three years, these guys/girl will either a) be doing construction jobs or b) fall out the bottom of the porn industry. Oh and this is a little off topic, but have you ever watched part of Miley’s TV show? It’s unbearable. And not in that little kid kind of way, but in that I-want-to-rip-her-throat-out kind of way. Don’t kids these days have any standards for what they watch or listen to?
Of course, there’s no reason Disney (or any other studio) should listen to me. A concert movie is a quick and easy way to make some cash. Basically, you set up a few cameras and push ‘record’ and you have yourself a movie. And apparently, that’s enough to get kids into the theater. But these aren’t movies and filmed concerts should go straight to DVD. Let’s stop with the unnecessary theatrical releases and save the theaters for actual movies.

Disney is not a bad company, they're just a smart one. They see they have a hit with Hannah Montana on television, so naturally they spend a few extra dollars and shoot her concert. It paid off, they made money, and that's good for everyone. That means that Pixar gets to keep making movies and they constantly produce the best movies of any/every year. So while I would not pay a dime to see her I can appreciate her success because Disney's all-around success means Pixar gets to keep pushing the boundaries of children's entertainment.
Oh, and one more thing, your rant about concert films makes you sound ignorant. There have been great concert films for decades, find yourself a copy of Don't Look Back and watch an intimate portrait of an artist at his prime. Watch Gimme Shelter and you witness a death at a concert, and the reaction of the members of the band to it. Concert films done right can be intense, compelling theatrical experiences.
What you said was equivalent of watching Twilight and immediately saying "fuck all fantasy-based movies from here on out. They're not even movies because one of them wasn't good."
Surely you must have better opinions hiding up your sleeve. Or at least Joblo has someone on hand that can write more thought-out C'mon Hollywood articles. Hell, I can think of ten things about Hollywood on a daily basis.

I think concert "movies" are just plain idiotic to begin with. Wouldn't you rather go to the actual concert? Hell, I was disappointed with SHINE A LIGHT. I went in expecting a documentary of the Rolling Stones by Scorsese and what I got was maybe 10 minutes of behind the scenes stuff and two hours of a concert. It was the Stones, so it was good, but still; if I want to see a concert it's not going to be in a movie theater.

Where's Little Giants? The Sandlot? Have they been replaced with Jonas Bros. and Hannah Montana and talking chihuha movies?
That's the point we're making. How about a lil originality in kids movies.. instead of fueling kids into this gigantic pop machine of death.

also the studios are planning these really well, Jonas brothers wasnt meant to be a HUGE thing, just get them a lot of money in one weekend and then die out within 2 weeks intime for monsters v aliens to take the 3d Screens across the nation, and theyve been completely accurate in their projection.

I don't watch these concert movies because they obviously weren't made for me, or any children I'll have, because they'll be bright, lovely kids who will have only ever known good music if I have anything to do with it.
I would submit that it is wrong for Disney to sell kids nothing but vapid mediocrity, but like you said, there's not much ...

If my 6 year old daughter wants to see Beverly Hills Chihuahua or Hannah Montana the Movie, great. I'm glad that her interests are being represented.
Why shouldn't her demographic be catered to the same as everyone else? 80% of the movies showing in any given theater on any given weekend were made for the 15-32 male audience.
The same goes with all the incessant bitching about movies like Twilight or Wild Hogs or any other flick that the elitist indie crowd deems unfit for consumption. If you're not interested in the movie, then let those that are enjoy it and shut up.
