Spidey 4 script coming

by: Daniel Barna Apr. 1, 2009

It feels like ages ago since SPIDER-MAN 3 was released to almost universal disdain from fanboys world over. After Batman came along and surpassed Spidey as the most zeitgeisty superhero franchise, we all kind of forgot about our eight-legged friend and a promised fourth installment of the series; too concerned with even the slightest microscopic tidbits of Batman casting news.

Although we may have forgotten, Spidey helmer Sam Raimi definitiely has not, telling Empire magazine recently that the final script for SPIDER-MAN 4 will be finished by the summer, in order to make the announced May 6, 2011 release date.

We have to make the release date, and on all of these pictures, the 'Spider-Man' films--and I'm sure it's the same as with many of the other bigger-budgeted films--they have release dates far in advance of a screenplay. So it's about getting it ready the best you can in time for the first day of production. That's what we've always done, and that's what we'll try to do again.

Raimi goes on to note that on the upcoming film, he will be given far more control over the finished product than on the previous installlment, which can only be a good thing.

They really gave me a tremendous amount of control on the first two films, actually. But then there were different opinions on the third film and I didn't really have creative control, so to speak. The best way for me to move forward on films, is that I've got to be the singular voice that makes the creative choices on the film. I love Spider-Man so much that I'd like to continue telling Spider-Man stories. But only under those circumstances where I think I can honour him.

This is all fine and dandy Mr. Raimi but we're all dying to know; have you heard any Batman sequel casting rumours!?

Extra Tidbit: Let's start some Spidey villain casting rumours, shall we?

Spidy 4... Let's see what happens
OK, as for the original casting, kick out Dunst. That's about it. Maguire is still alright, he just needs the motivation ($$$) to become the web-slinging dude he was in the first one. As for 3, take it at face value. Venom was handled badly, but if the fans beg enough, he will get his own movie. Simple as that. The symbiote suit was done well and I'm cool with that. The Lizard may be a copout, ...

The Lizard may be a copout, but it;s the most logical progression. I do like the idea of seeing Kraven (Burt Reynolds anyone?) Vulture (Ben Kingsly...Badass!) or Mysterio (Quentin Beck=QT??? Just my suggestion), but a Sinister Six is out of the question. Doc Ock is dead(?) and they kill villains in the Spiderman movies as much as they do in the 90s Batman series. There won't be any left for Six. Venom coming back could happen (some of the suit was still in Dr. Conner's lab n there was like 3 other Venoms out there), but not Carnage. Gobby scared my little cousin back in the day, can you imagine that vicious red madman getting his proper justice in a PG-13 movie? Doubt it. Venom was borderline just cuz he DIDNT eat anyone's organs in the film.
Sorry. I'm such a fan I have to tackle all the issues at hand.

One more thing: Get Paul Walker out of the Fast n Furious series and get him in the Cap Am suit. Don't believe me... watch Running Scared again and tell me otherwise.

Mysterio or Chameleon would be good. But I would like to see Dunst, McGuire and Raimi replaced for subsequent Spidey movies.

Do you people REALLY want the Lizard? It'd end up being the exact same story as Goblin and Octopus. Good guy at heart has a freak accident and ends up becoming a villain. Oh and that good guy at heart just so happens to be part of Peter Parker's social circle.

Glad to hear it. One of the villains is bound to be The Lizard, it's been impending since the first Spidey. If they throw in another one for good measure how about Raimi's originally intended Ben Kingsley Vulture? Or Kraven to hunt Spidey and said villian? Spidey as lots of cool villians, it's tough to narrow down. Lizards almost a give-in though.

Oh please Raimi give us another villain who's not really a bad guy and only becomes evil because of some freak accident. Spider-Man 3 may have been the most difficult to sit through, but as far as I'm concerned the entire trilogy was fucked from the start. The best thing they could have done for SM4 was get rid of Raimi's ass, in fact they should have sent him walking in SM3 when he insisted ...

To my knowledge, Raimi and his brother already wrote the treatment with Sandman and another villain in mind. Later, Sony wanted Venom so ANOTHER WRITER Alvin Sargent came to shoehorn the character into the already planned story. Even then, I don't blame Alvin it was just the studio that micro manage the project.

I like Raimi. I don't like Fanboys
I still like Raimi despite Spider-Man 3. Honestly, I think the online bunch have their reasons for not like Raimi, but some people ARE so unforgiving to write Raimi off.

I'm giving Raimi the damn benefit of the doubt. The man brought me Evil Dead and I will always give him that second chance.

Despite the problems Spiderman 3 had, I am still a fan of the franchise. I would like to see lizard in part 4, and build up to Carnage in part 5.

i'm not hip to this news.
spiderman 1, and 2 were awesome. then came spiderman 3.....then came the dark knight.
spiderman 3 ruined the franchise, and TDK blew every prior movie in the genre out of the water, making it really hard for me to get exciting about any comic book movie to come.

Raimi didn't want venom
And that guy wound up in the movie anyway. Raimi was more of an old-school Spider-Man fan, and Avi Arad suggested give the fans what they want - Venom - and the rest is what fanboys have been bitching about ever since Spidey 3 was released.

Lizard = dull, dull, dull. I can't see him carrying the film as the only villain, but that's just me.

Would much rather see Scorpion, Mysterio or Chameleon.

Shouldn't the script to this have been done like a year ago??

Sam Raimi's ego has grown out of control
The comments about him not being given full creative control? Rubbish. He had just as much control on the first two films. It's a blockbuster franchise -- if he wants full singular control, he should fuck right off. It goes without saying that directing a blockbuster franchise you won't be allowed to do whatever you want without consequences.

It's a blockbuster franchise -- if he wants full singular control, he should fuck right off. It goes without saying that directing a blockbuster franchise you won't be allowed to do whatever you want without consequences.

Fans wanted Venom. The producers wanted Venom for the fans. Raimi didn't want Venom because he didn't like the character. He's obviously placing blame for the film on others BECAUSE it was poorly received, but doesn't anyone else find it awfully interesting that - prior to the movie's release - he was glowing about how the film "changed his mind" about Venom and how he "fell in love with the character"? Now his opinion has changed again, eh?

I'm not a comic book geek so I couldn't give a fuck about the villains -- all I know fro my childhood is: Venom is badass and always has been badass and Raimi turned him into a wimp. Raimi is also a bad director and his "vision" for the series is starting to become really grating.

I'd prefer to see Jake Gyllenhaal take over the role (because Maguire is also becoming insufferable as Peter Parker) and have someone like Aronofsky tackle the next sequel.

Raimi didn't have to give Venom the d-list treatment because h didn't like him. F*ck Sam Raimi. I would prefer a new direction for Spiderman but thats just opinion.

Fuck this "Give me more creative control" bs. I'm not going to pretend that the first two Spidey flicks weren't excellent, but they had excellent screenplays to go along with that (especially Spider-Man 2). But Spider-Man 3, studio tampered with or not, had Raimi and his brother taking the screenwriting reigns... The script for the film was easily the worst part of the film.

I'm all for Spidey 4, I'm hoping they give Raimi breathing room like mentioned because I think you could really see Venom was pretty much shoehorned into S-M 3.

Mysterio is a good suggestion but the Lizard is a great villian to use that's been hinted at in all 3 movies and could be on par with Doc Ock from SM2 in terms of power, tragedy, and parallels. Imagine the scenes that could happen if Spidey were forced to go down into the dark sewers to find and fight him.

I like the idea of weaving in Kraven as well but I'd only be happy with that if Raimi can intertwine his story in well. That's one big reason why SM3 blew ass. If he can't do it, I hope he sticks to one villian at a time.

Even though Spider-Man 3 happened, I'm still willing to give Spidey 4 the benefit of a doubt. As long as they focus on ONE villain.

P.S. I fuckin' hate April Fools Day. It gives people an excuse to act like total twats for a day.

I think the only way to redeam the screw-up with the Venom story is to finally transform Dr. Connor into the Lizard and have an extremely dark, savage slugfest with our friendly neighborhood Spider-man. They've been dangling this Lizard carrot in front of our noses for too long.

I think its pretty obvious that The Lizard will be the villian coz it hinted in first movie.

Remeber when Peter said: "Dr. Connors fired me for being late again" or something like that.

I;ve grown tired of Spider-Man now I just want to see more of J.K. Simmons as Jonah.

Although if done right Kraven's Last Hunt would be pretty cool setting up for a 5th movie based on Torment.

P.S. on the April Fools thing...
I guess I found the year's April Fool's joke not terribly funny. Usually there is a "tell" somewhere, but as I read through it (knowing, since it's the front page story, that it was this year's joke) I couldn't find the thing that said "impossible". Maybe my sense of humor was turned off today.

Oh, on Spidey 4...announce the villain, and if it's met with universal disdain, then...

I think the visual effects potential with Mysterio would be out of this world. That would be a great villian to get rocking on. They could also do a true to comic version of The Punisher and have a little bit of the "I'm a good, bad guy" thing going on. I liked Spider-Man 1 and 2 a lot. Didn't care much for the story in 3 but have high hopes for 4.
