For all of you (like me) who really couldn't stand SPIDER-MAN 3, you've got some pretty good company: Sam Raimi himself. The director spoke to Empire Magazine (via CHUD) and he said that he's still a little upset at how SPIDER-MAN 3 turned out. "I don't even want to comment on Venom," said Raimi explaining, "there were different opinions on the third film and I didn't really have creative control, so to speak." In other words, he didn't want Venom in the film at all but the people at Marvel really pushed for that character because he was a fan favorite. Raimi doesn't blame the fans and their love for Venom because he admits "I'm the one that doesn't understand" the character's popularity. The man was quite diplomatic though saying he didn't want to disparage his partners on that film and was looking forward to SPIDER-MAN 4 where he would have sole creative control over the film. "I've gotta be the singular voice that makes the creative choices on the film," says Raimi. I can't believe it took Marvel three films to realize this... spiderman 3 was a clusterfuck.....
i just watched SM3 on stars agian, i tryed to understand everything, i can't blame Raimi for the whole clusterfuck, this movie had to many things wrong with it from the start, i'm a huge venom fan so i was more pissed about that than anything else, As far as the humor thing goes i don't think that dance thing was part of that, i've seen most of his flims and i don't remember shit like that, i'...

I think at the end of the day, like the movie itself, this was just a bad clusterfuck of people and ideas being mixed around and not working well together.

I mentioned earlier that Raimi shouldn't get all the blame. Nor the Execs completely. Everyone involved (Raimi, Sargent, the Sony Execs, Arad, etc...) should all receive the blame for creating this clusterfuck of a movie.
I think at the end of the day, like the movie itself, this was just a bad clusterfuck of people and ideas being mixed around and not working well together.

To all those people here who are complaining about the "emo Parker" dance scenes, I understand from where you are coming. However, have you never seen a Raimi film before? Cornball humor can be found in many of his films, including the famous Evil Dead series. Basically, that is the type of humor Raimi has, which makes me think that perhaps the studio gave him too much control. It might have been smarter for the studio to say: "I know you and your brother think that is funny, but this is a blockbuster and we don't need you wasting time with dance numbers." I actually thought, though, that the biggest fault in this movie was not the corny, Raimiesque scenes, but rather the Peter Parker character. I hated self involved Peter and his attitude throughout the film. He deserved what he got for how he treated Brock and Flinn. Therefore, I wasn't invested in the hero, which meant I didn't care about the film.

As for the Venom storyline, I heard in the commentary that they originally had a different plan for how they would present this "dark side" of Parker without the symbiote, but was forced to incorporate it when the studio pushed them to add Venom. Also, according to Raimi in that commentary track, the Raimi brothers had absolutely nothing to do with the writing of the Venom storyline. It was Alvin Sargent who wrote all the Venom scenes. Maybe he was just trying to distance himself, but it makes sense. Why would he write scenes he didn't care about? So, Sargent deserves some blame as well.

As far as Spider-Man 4 goes, the idea of Raimi having complete creative control disgusts me. He has made it abundantly clear that he never wants to move forward with Parker as a character, which means we get stuck with a whiny little [link] douche bag for yet another film. I miss the Spider-Man that I grew up with who made smartass witty comments while fighting, and didn't cry every five minutes. What the fuck happened to THAT guy? I liked the first two films, but even by the end of the second one the "oh poor me" crap was getting to be a bit much. I can't take it for yet another outing...

The first flick was awesome for what it did to comic adaptations, but it wasn't great. The second was flat awful, comical in how soberly pretentious it was. All I saw of the third was having a friend skip around on his DVD so I could see Venom, the laughed heartily at Venom turning to nothingness for the same reason one mobile home fuckup yells at children and their noisy nonsense. venom isn't the only thing wrong with sm3
I think that SM3 is bad in so many ways, and the way Venom was treated is small beans compared to the entire spilled mess.

It's all business. Gavin Hood comes forth and states it's mutual creativity in force with the studio on Wolverine. Now Raimi says it's the studio's fault on Spidey 3. Yet Danny Elfman gave up his working relationship with Raimi after Spidery 2. I think Raimi was given too much money one day and became a prick. I cannot believe that with 200 hundred meetings between director, writer, and studio ...

The Green Goblin is comparable to Joker, not Venom. Venom wasn't created until the 80's and his popularity is only recent. Joker was around since the beginnings of Batman.

Agreed, the problem was the script, and the script was written by Raimi and his brother. The pitfalls of Spider-Man 3 go FAR beyond the bastardization of Venon. It's just a HORRIBLY written movie in general. Sony should have shit canned Raimi and given the job to someone who actually gave a damn.

Next you had Raimi casting his children in all these roles which explains all the cut to of kids going "YAY SPIDER-MAN!" Took you out of the fight scenes everytime they did that. Also all the costumes were terrible, something that Raimi had final say over...

...but I liked Spider-man 3 the most from the trilogy. Sure, the dance scene was bad but apart from that I relly liked it. And the main reason I liked it: It's as good as a superhero movie can be. You shouldn't take TOO seriously a kind of movie like that. Not the third one, not the second, nor the first one.
If you want drama, more complex characters, better story, watch movies like The...
...but I liked Spider-man 3 the most from the trilogy. Sure, the dance scene was bad but apart from that I relly liked it. And the main reason I liked it: It's as good as a superhero movie can be. You shouldn't take TOO seriously a kind of movie like that. Not the third one, not the second, nor the first one.
If you want drama, more complex characters, better story, watch movies like The Godfather.
Sure, there is a difference between The Phantom and the Spider-man movies, but at the end, in a (mostly European) point of view, these are just comicbook movies!

yea, there was no excuse for emo parker and the infamous dance routine and the character of Venom (and mabye Carnage one day) would be better in the hands of a different director/writer ..but Raimi needs to bring in the Lizard for the next film dammmit

I think Spiderman 1 is one of the best superhero movies ever, and Spiderman 2 is THE best movie ever, and Spiderman 3 is underrated. It could have, and SHOULD have been better, but for what it is, it is a very good movie. Just a few stupid descisions throughout.

So anyway... cant wait for Spidey 4!

For all you people who keep saying "Marvel," Marvel had nothing to do with this movie. The only movies Marvel produced were Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk. Spider-man 3 was produced by Sony, not Marvel. When he says the studio pushed a character on him, it was by Sony, not Marvel.

Granted, there are more folks involved in this picture than Raimi... but SPIDEY 3 DID NOT NEED A FUCKING DANCE NUMBER! Sandman was fine, Gwen was fine (though unnecessary) and I don't have a problem with Topher Grace as Brock, necessarily. It wasn't the character's fault for being ...

I remember reading something like this a year or two before SM3 came out and Raimi said he didn't want to put Venom in it, but he was made to do so.

If Raimi didn't have to focus on Vemon the the 25 minutes he was in it, he could've made the movie atleast good.

The third one was terrible but the second one is still one of the best comic book adaptations, right behind X-Men 2 and The Dark Knight.

I'm no fan of Venom either-hope to see Hammer Head and or Man Wolf in next film-some Spidey villains that I use to like such as Grizzly worked well in the pages of a comic book-BUT a live action Grizzly would look too silly...Some bad guys are just not doable in live action film unfortunately. BTW-I liked Spider Man 3! good stuff! wasn't into Venom so much but he was well served in this film.

I'm not surprised in the least if Raimi was forced to shoehorn Venom in. The way some studios can be run, I can believe in what Raimi is saying. He's not fully innocent in how everything fell in SM3, the some characters and plots were handled, but he's not the sole problem either.
I'm not surprised in the least if Raimi was forced to shoehorn Venom in. The way some studios can be run, I can believe in what Raimi is saying. He's not fully innocent in how everything fell in SM3, the some characters and plots were handled, but he's not the sole problem either.

Ive heard just about enough of Raimi blaming other people for SM3 -- Maybe he is right though, and it was Marvels fault-- Because they never should have a hired a director who by his own admission doesnt get the popularity of venom... Guess what, Raimi, if you dont get that, maybe you dont get the whole thing....

And corvettefan-- Theres no reason to think marvel wasnt involved ...

And corvettefan-- Theres no reason to think marvel wasnt involved in the venom debacle-- They have shot themeselves in the foot several times with Ironman 2 already, and presuming marvel wouldnt push for venom in a spidey movie (especially the third) is without basis.

Granted, Raimi does sound a little bit like a whiny pussy. Obviously there were so many things wrong with that film that he can't be a little responsible. But anyone who thinks that the director is the top of the food chain when it comes to a multimillion dollar franchise is just ignorant. The fish rots from the head down but Raimi is far from the head.

The real problem of Spider-Man 3 was how it handles those multi-storylines. Spider-Man 2 left (what I think) as one of the best endings for a superhero movie. Then Spider-Man 3 came along and we all know what happens after that. I'm glad that Raimi acknowledges what kind of reaction Spider-Man 3 received. I do hope to see Spider-Man 4 as some sort of reboot of Spider-Man franchise. Not as Batma...

Wait a minute ... If SM3 was nothing but Sandman, it would have been horrible. THey made his character out to be TOOOO much like Doc Ock. Although, adding the Vulture in would have been sweet. Ben Kingsley? Would have rocked.

Having Venom in the movie wasn't the problem... it was HOW they had Venom. I'd be perfectly fine if the 4th movie just ignored the 3rd one and the Venom story was done right. i wanna see Raimi's horror influence on venom done proper!

Oh I forgot to mention. Venom had nothing to do with that goofy flashback of uncle bens killer being sandman. Plus when sandman flies away at the end they missed a perfect opportunity to place Robin williams voice from hook in saying "thankyou for believing"
That plot and characters were terrible and it all leads straight to raimi.

Spider-man 3 sucked. The original villans were Sandman and Vulture, and ben kingsley was already in talks to play Vulture. But Avi Arad listened to fanboys on the net complaining that they wanted venom and he said ok. So against sam raimi wishes they hired a writer and added Venom, and took out Vulture. It sucks i would have loved to see Vulture in the movie. Im not a big venom fan in the first...

And it sucks they hired Topher grace to play him. I always thought he would be a good replacement of magire for spider-man. Oh well. Im pumped for spider-man 4, would love to see Kraven the Hunter as a villan. But i think the best villen to bring to the screen would be Mysterio! think what they could do with him, and his special effects weapons, ha he is begging to be put on the big screen.

He's a stupid character. He was put in the movie because he was visual and raimi tried to copy the character traits "misunderstood bad guy" from the last two movies and it blew up in his face. There is nothing worse then a director crying that he isn't responsible for his own work. YOu don't see an artist saying, I painted that picture but it is someone else's fault it sucks. All spider-man movies suck and raimi plus sony are responsible.

the way 3 shouldve ended was peter beating sandman in some truly horrible (or almost doing something horrible but beats him anyway) way, him goin to the church and ripping the suit off, and the last thing we see before end credits roll is venom lunging at the screen
