...Wolverine leaked…who cares?!
by Sturdy

Last week, it was revealed that an early, unfinished print of WOLVERINE was leaked online to various file-sharing networks. The news made national headlines, not only on movie websites, but on other news sites such as CNN and USA Today. Some news outlets began to speculate that this security breach might have an impact on WOLVERINE’s overall box-office take. What really pisses me off about the whole situation is that if Wolvie doesn’t open huge ($90+ million), you know the first thing said will be that the leak killed the box-office. The film may be a gigantic turd (I desperately hope not), but that won’t matter; Fox and the media will blame the web leak

This “leak” will have zero impact on WOLVERINE’s success. However, do you know what will have an impact on the film’s success? The quality of the film. Does anyone think that if the DARK KNIGHT had been leaked online a month before it came out that it wouldn’t still be the second highest grossing movie of all time? No, it would be just as successful and we’d still be gushing ourselves over it. People will go see a good movie, especially if it's a summer blockbuster.

Wasn’t this film online about six months before it came out?

Now everyone that has anything to do with making a film may want to take a seat for this, because I’m about to lay something on you. No matter what you do, or how hard you try, no one is going to stop someone from seeing your movie for free. Whether they’re downloading the movie off the internet or sneaking into a theater, if you want to see a film for free, you can. In fact, it’s not really that difficult. People make livings off of eating for free, seeing movies for free isn’t that much of a challenge. Those cheapskates are not going to impact your box-office tally. Because chances are good that if they couldn’t see it for free, they wouldn’t see it at all.

If it’s good enough, people will go see it.

One of the things that’s ironic about this story is that even though 99% of the web has denounced the leak and refused to review it, one of the very few reviews of the film was posted over at “Fox 411”. Yes, that’s correct. The reviewer got fired for it, but it’s ironic that one of Fox’s own offshoots was actually responsible for one of the few reviews. Also, isn’t it fitting that one of the bigger instances of piracy is really solely the responsibility of a studio (the print came from them somehow, as did the most-read review) and that studio happened to be Fox?

On a related note; I really hope they do something cool with Deadpool.

I will say that even though I don’t believe a movie leaking on the web has any effect on the box-office numbers, that doesn’t mean I don’t think the people that leaked it shouldn’t be prosecuted. The fact remains that they stole something that wasn’t theirs and gave it away to a lot of people. I don’t care too much about the studio execs, but there’s a lot of hard working, below the line people that deserve better than that. I don’t condone the action, but I think Hollywood and the media is making too much out of it. The film leaked online, who cares?

Extra Tidbit: What's your favorite conspiracy theory as to why/how this film was leaked?

I'm from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, and this 'leak' is available everywhere! But, as a true fan of the movie going experience , I refuse to look at it. The fact remains that it's not even a good copy and everyone i know who has seen it, is STILL going to check it out in cinemas. So I think Sturdy is dead on . It really doesn't make a difference to true fans.

I really don't see the leak affecting the box office that much. I have seen the bootleg. Not a big fan. I will probably still pay to see it though to see the finished graphics. My main concern with the film is how yes they made a Wolverine and Victor Creed backstory, but in the process fucked with many other important and fan favorite characters. What happens with Deadpool is a shame. I had high expectations for him. They even ruined the cameos.

Lmao. The optimism in this article is unreal. Not that it matters anyway. The movie looks like it's gonna blow, a disappointment created sites like these that over-hyped it before we even saw a glimpse of it.

Cricker, I'm with you in some ways, JohnLocke, I'm with you in others. I DO want to see certain movies on the big screen, but I'm blessed with a very nice home theater setup, so I'm happier watching there. I HATE the theater-going crowd most of the time (unless they can be as quiet for me as I can for them... which TOO often is not the case); so I'm much happier watching at home.

So, almost like Cricker said, if I could get a DVD or Blu-ray before (or at the same time) a movie is released in theaters, I would never go to the theater. I would be thrilled if they started releasing the DVD at the same time as the theater release. THRILLED!

HOWEVER, I would much prefer to go to the theater, or to WAIT for the DVD/Blu-ray for months, rather than watch "bootleg" anything! I love and appreciate movies too much to watch them from some smuggled video camera footage. That's not worth the time. Besides, don't some bootlegs bring those cell-phone using, chit-chatting slobs into your living room too?

I tried one time to download a movie, just to see, and discovered it's not worth the time and effort. It looked like crap. And a friend loaned me a copy of a movie that he got from... I guess, a flea-market or something, and it was a movie I really, really wanted to see... I gave it a look, and it looked much better than I expected... but it still looked like crap, so I didn't watch it.

Even if someone actually made a TRULY "DVD-quality" bootleg, I'd still not want to go to the hassle of downloading it. Besides, I like the legitimate case and cover art. To me, quality is more important than cost. So, it's the theater, or I'll wait for the DVD or Blu-ray.

Cricker...I'm gonna have to disagree with you.

Having a 46" LED 1080p with blu-ray and a surround sound in my living quarters, I still prefer the theater experience for movies I MUST see on the big screen. Yeah, blu-ray shits all over the grain of a theater projector, my own pantry usually makes stale movie theater popcorn taste better and yes, for the price, I could buy the movie/drinks and still pay less then seeing it once in a theater; but that's not why movies appeal to me.

Like many of you, I wait for more movies on DVD but the summer movie experience is all about anxiously waiting to see these big time movies no the big screen!

As it is now I wont go see most movies in the theater bc my setup at home is so much better (65inch Hi-def, awesomely loud surround sound and I can eat and drink what I want, when I want). If I could get a DVD quality bootleg of a movie before it is released I would never go to the theater and I know a lot of friends and family think the same. Also the punks that go to movies today and play on their cell phones and make noise (throughout) makes me want to go less. So if i can avoid all that plus paying $9 dollars for a popcorn I will.

I'm with DD on this one. I think that the movie was getting such bad press out of the gate that Fox leaked the film to gauge fan response and then tweak the film within the last month before release.

And I think the fact that it was a workprint supports that theory, particularly since Fox has said that there were placeholder FX and music, as well as being "unedited". The film will be different upon release, guaranteed.

if it were implied that maybe Fox leaked their own movie so they had something to blame the fact it was a high profile turkey on, that would suggest they'd made and planned to release a film they knew was rubbish.

I know there's a lot of Fox haters out there, some would say understandably so, but the suggestion that they're deliberately releasing bad films that will disappoint fans seems a little insane, and then why not do what any studio does when it knows it has a turkey on its hands - cut a great trailer to keep people interested, limit pre-release reviews to suck-up journalists, and then hope enough people see it before word gets out. I don't see them leaking their own film for any reason. apart from a bit of extra press, where's the benefit?

Great point on Taken. The DVD rip was leaked over a month before, and it still killed at the box office. Hell, I downloaded it, and I'm STILL going to see it tomorrow at the theater. Why? Cause it was GOOD!

The only time a stink gets made, is when it's a big whoopidy do movie. Remember the Spider-man stink? Or the SW:Ep1 fiasco? Yea... really hurt those sales eh? And really, it's FOX's fault in the long run. Somebody in their employ "leaked" the screener, not the poor guy who downloaded a copy, then upped a torrent. Don't toss his poor ass in jail. Go after the dink that "leaked" it.

Hey, look at Zombie's Halloween. The WP "leaked", then the final version was different, and apparently better. Wouldn't know cause I've seen neither. I still say Zombie leaked it himself, as a more wide spread "test screening".

I say, "Shut up studios". Don't blame us lowly downloaders, cause the movies you toss hundreds of millions into don't make all their money back in 3 days... jerkasses.
