... give us more Roger Rabbit!
by Sturdy

Yeah, I know, this kind of falls into the “where the hell did that come from?” category, but every now and again I like to mix things up. With all the shitty films getting sequels these days and every bad 80’s TV show getting a feature film, I think we could do well with revisiting one of the more popular family films of the late 80’s, early 90’s. WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT is still a great film and I’d love to see a sequel to it.

I won’t hide my unabashed love for the film. I was about 10 years-old when the film came out at the theater and that was the perfect age for a film like this. The very idea of seeing Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny on screen together was enough to send me into an excited fit. I don’t think today’s kids have the same affection for Mickey and Bugs, but there are plenty of cartoon characters out there that kids appreciate. The beauty of the Toontown is that it transcended studios, so in theory, you could throw any animated character you wanted to in there.

Friends or reluctant co-stars?

The real question is what time period to set the sequel in. If the original took place in 1947, then they could theoretically have the sequel take place any time after that, or at least 20 years after. Personally, I loved the late 40’s atmosphere and I’d love to see them pick it up a few years later. But it could be an interesting story to have Roger, Jessica and Baby Herman interact with more modern characters. The “I’m too old for this shit” jokes would fly off the screen. But heck, even if you couldn’t get the different characters on screen, the three main animated characters and Bob Hoskins could pull off a sequel on their own. The storylines are practically endless and seeing them together again on the big screen would be a blast.

Confusing little boys since 1988!

Another reason to make a sequel to WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT is the seductress herself; Jessica Rabbit. She’s still a viable character in today’s pop culture, 20 years since the movie came out. And speaking of Jessica Rabbit, what the hell happened to Kathleen Turner? The woman should sue Father Time because surely what he’s done to her can’t be legal. But I digress. The point is that Jessica Rabbit is still relevant because animated women with red hair and huge breasts never go out of style.

Seeing the Justin Timberlake (is he actually getting more annoying?) and Jessica Biel skit reminded me how much I loved WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT. The greatness of the original was that it seamlessly combined Toontown and the real world. But the real world part was what made the film stand out. The blending of animation and live-action provided great symmetry for the blending of serious, mature themes with childish comedy. With a good script, I think this would make a great sequel.

I'd personally love to see a Valiant & Valient film that took place before Who Framed Roger Rabbit. In fact I have a treatment for it... Anyone intrested? lol.

I was 12 when this came out. It sucked then and it would most definitely suck now. I loved the looney toon cartoons. It seemed like a cheap copy to me. So please no. Don't even think about bringing that crap back.

I love this movie, too, and not only are the jokes still funny, and some of the practical SF/X are still remarkable, what made this movie great was a combination of so many factors - but the star of the show was the groundbreaking combination of animation and live-action footage, combined in a more realistic fashion than ever before with that amazing interaction.

But we have animated films combining with live-action movies all the time now, with the CGI characters like Gollum, King Kong, and the SW prequels chock full of this stuff - I think the time has passed for a quality sequel to be made.

This was a film ahead of its time. Literally. And still a great watch, especially if you know how and when it was done! Bravo again to all those involved with this movie.

The film has untouchable magic.

However, I would find an untouched re-release to be appropriate.

Actually, I'm pretty sure one of the attempts WAS a prequel, intended to show how Roger became famous, and a young Valiant just getting into the PI biz. It didn't go over well, probably for being a darker take.

Heh...too bad that's not being pitched today or Disney et al would jump at it, eh?

Disney tried to push roger for several years after the movie had run its course. Hell disney still has the prop house at mgm studios full of stuff from that movie but its doubtful that roger rabbit could work in its original form. My suggestion is do a prequal with the valiant brothers doing cases in toon town and the big city. That could be pretty intersting. Or even better they could go r rated and make it like cool world. Scar Jo as a non animated jessica? hmmm That certainly would be interesting.

And and the reason why we don't see any RR shorts (or hardly any shorts anymore) - because Theaters/MPAA are still doing the same backwards payout plan that killed shorts in the first place: longer movies get a larger cut of the profits. So the shorter it is, the less money you make from it. If you make any at all, which I doubt they did.

Because it's a retarded business plan.

It was attempted, I think, in the mid or late 90s. But the budget went into the 100 million range and the studio got cold feet before preproduction even got off the ground. One of many, many roadblocks, actually.

Between its release and today, I think Roger Rabbit has had as much trouble and drama coming up with a sequel as The Ghostbusters. Maybe even more.

...to one of the most original and groundbreaking and FUN films of all time! I agree with Sturdy 100% on this one! A big-screen sequel would make a killing! Hard to believe the suits are sitting on millions with this property but refuse to stand up! And while we're talking Roger and Co., how about producing more animated shorts like "Rollercoaster Rabbit"! It's been 21 years, plenty of time for someone to pick up the ball.

Now I absolutely LOVE that movie. And a time might've been where a sequel could've been good. But now I feel the time passed long ago. The characters in Toon Town were all from the studio's Golden Age. And as you mention, Sturdy, kids today might not feel the same about those particular characters. Not to mention Bob Hoskins isn't getting any younger.

Every now and then a movie comes along blending cartoons and real people. None has lived up to what "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" did. On top of the anime and SpongeBob crazes, every big studio cartoon is done in CGI, which isn't nearly as interesting as when 2-D animation is shown in the same scene as live people.

This movie had its shot, I think, but short of Special Editions and rereleasing it in theaters, I don't feel it needs any sequels now.

If they do make this movie they need to keep it set in the 40s or 50s. Maybe 60s. If they do it in modern day it would be nothing but a bunch of Nick rejects and anime.
