Holmes goes Dark
Katie Holmes has signed on to star in DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, a thriller co-written by Guillermo del Toro. DARK, based on a 1973 made-for-TV movie, follows a young girl who moves in with her father and his girlfriend (presumably the role Holmes would play) and their discovery that there are demon-like creatures inhabiting the house. Miramax has set Troy Nixey to direct the film after del Toro saw his short film "Latchkey's Lament" and recommended him to the studio (for the record, we were recommending Nixey and LATCHKEY back in 2007). In addition to his work on the script and about 100 other projects (including Universal's HATER), del Toro will also be producing the film. And though you might think Holmes hasn't done much since marrying Tom Cruise, she does have THE EXTRA MAN, with John C. Reilly and Kevin Kline, set for release in 2010. So there.

Her Rachel Dawes was a dour, cynical woman with no passion (which is why I just don't buy Harvey Dent's ridiculous turnaround). Katie Holmes imbued her character with innocence, charm and idealism with just a touch of defeat, hinting at the monstrous uphill battle she was facing in Gotham City.

With DVD to Blu-Ray, it's basically more of the same with better image quality. Since most people are quite satisfied with DVD image quality, they see no reason to switch to what is essentially an identical format.
Additionally, with HD downloads already available and having the potential to become more mainstream, Blu-Ray is already an obsolete technology.
As far as this movie goes, I've not seen anything by the director but Del Tor has yet to impress me (yes, that includes the overrated "Pan's Labyrinth").

And one of those titles is, in fact, the original "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" (along with "Vampire Circus" and "Max Headroom" and "Starlight Hotel" and so on...).

Interesting, too, that the studios are so concerned with plummeting DVD sales; do they really not understand that many people are concerned about investing in, again, a possibly obsolete format (DVD)...while, at the same time, those same people may not want to invest in a more expensive, new format (Blu-ray) that's really only nominally better?
Yes, I said "nominally". The upgrade from VHS to DVD was obvious to most people but, let's face it, most ("most", not "all") people also really can't see much practical difference between DVD and Blu-ray.
Wow, sorry, I seriously wandered off-topic didn't I?

She's still a better Rachel Dawes than Gyllenhaal (whom I do like).
