WEEKEND BOX-OFFICE

Pixar in driver's seat...again!

Once again, Pixar's latest animated movie finished atop the box-office as UP managed $68M in receipts, making it the 3rd highest opening for any Pixar film right behind FINDING NEMO and THE INCREDIBLES, each of which blew their doors open with $70M. Those two films went on to gross $339M and $261M respectively, so things bode well for UP at this point. For those scoring at home, last year's WALL-E opened with $63M and went to gross $223M overall.

Last week's #2 movie, TERMINATOR SALVATION, dropped like a hooker on New Year's Eve, losing 63% of its audience from last weekend, while nabbing another $16M along the way. The film has now grossed $90M in the first 10 days of its release, which isn't a great number considering that it apparently cost about $200M to make. STAR TREK, on the other hand, continued to chug along with another $13M added to its coffers this weekend, giving it a grand total of $209M so far this year, which makes it the #1 movie of the year so far in 2009. WOLVERINE is surprisingly the #3 movie of the year so far. Huh, who knew?! I guess that "internet leak" didn't make that much of a difference, eh?

Last week's #1 movie, NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2, managed to hang around the top 2 for another week, shelling in another $25M, which took its total over $100M after only 10 days of release. The weekend's only other major release, Sam Raimi's DRAG ME TO HELL, managed a decent 3rd place showing with about $17M (an even greater accomplishment when you note that it played in about 1,000 less theaters than any of the other films in the top 6). Go Raimi!

Next weekend sees the release of two other big summer possible blockbusters in LAND OF THE LOST starring Will Ferrell and Danny McBride (these two might be officially married at this point) and THE HANGOVER, director Todd Phillips' latest "men drinking and carousing" comedy. Nice! HANGOVER has been receiving tons of sweet buzz over the past few weeks, but we haven't heard much about LAND OF THE LOST. What are your thoughts on the film? And the question of the week: which film will finish atop the box-office next weekend? VOTE HERE!!!

1. Up $ 68.2 Million
NEW
2. Night at the... $ 25.5 Million $ 105.3 Million
3. Drag me to Hell $ 16.6 Million

4. Terminator Salvation $ 16.1 Million $ 90.7 Million
5. Star Trek $ 12.8 Million $ 209.5 Million

Good to see T4 bombing.
I'm so glad a movie that deserves to bomb finally does. About damn time. Hopefully this lets Hollywood know that people dont want to see movies milked to death.

The Terminator ended with 2, everyone knows this, and no one gives two shits about what hack filmmakers think they can add to the story. Its finished, McG, so go fuck off.

No actually most people want to stay home and watch a movie in the comfort of their own home. Lately it takes a lot and i mean A LOT to get people away from their HD tvs and blu-rays and netflix. It is sad, but the theater is dying. The industry hasn't seen a great money making films within the same year! There is usually one or two. A few years ago there were four and five. People say that movies do well because they pass 100 million within a week, but wih ticket prices at most theaters being 9-12 dollars 100 million isn't good. This is why the industry has been relying on dvd, netflix and blu-ray. The numbers speak for themselves. Aspecially when the industry double dips with the many releases of special editions, extended editions and criterion editions. The studios play an okay game at the theater business, but they play the most intelligent game with the home market. They need to be smarter with the theater releases and STOP pushing everything into May for the begining of summer. It does okay for them, but they could do better.

By the way Terminator came in 3rd this weekend with Drag me to Hell coming in 4th. Boxofficemojo.com If Drag me to hell was in a few more screens it would have made second place. But the studio was probably smart not to trust SM with another big movie until he has redemption with the next Spider-man, since the third one made a lot of people not trust him. This time he has total control!!! He should have from the get-go.

Um, isn't the opposite true? Would it really be better for the theatres if a whole month went by and no new movie came out? Wouldn't people stay away from the theatres? "What's new at the theatres this week?" "Nothing." "Nothing?! Let's rent a video instead." The fact is that the box office is up this year compared to last year and it's mostly because of family films: parents can't afford to take their kids to Disney World anymore so they're waiting for the next big family film to come up so that their kids can brag to their friends about how they saw it already. Oh and family films are having legs this year because the kids who didn't see the latest family film are going home and begging their parents to take them. It's really not all that different from thirty years ago when all the kids wanted their parents to take them to see a latest Star Wars movie. In retrospect, Term4 didn't have the kind of kiddie appeal that Trans2 is going to have. 90mil is not bad for the first nine days. Oh and you're wrong about Term4 not having come out worldwide yet: it came out in Asia this past weekend, no doubt to take advantage of the fact that last weekend was a long weekend as a result of the Dragon Boat Festival. Of course it'll take longer for the overseas numbers to become available, maybe another week.

The movie like the third is relying on DVD, Forgein market and now the amazing blu-ray. It will make its money back. WB isn't worried at all. They optioned another Terminator film with the same writers, and with the same budget and without Arnold and they proved they could be as succesful. It was a fun great adition for the franchise and better than the third outing by far. A step in the right direction. The bad thing is that too many studios competing with releasing movie after movie after movie with little to no gaps. That is bad for the entire business. It doesn't give movies a chance to make great money, instead they make okay to good money. Theaters lose with this as well since people will decide when they see a movie and will not go to a movie every weekend. They cannot afford it so they have to pick and choose. So those who don't take their families to everything will have to wait until it hits the home market. T4 and Night at M. dropped more than 50 and 60% NO SHIT!!!! Hollywood needs to be smart about how they make money. As long as all films are released before Christmas on dvd then they are happy. That is truly what makes the machine keep moving for ALL films. I've worked at movie theaters since 1995 and have seen a HUGE change in how many people go to movies and lets face it, there are only a handfull if that a year that will bring in ALL the crowds.
Look at the first and second place of Box office gross. There is a big gap that would be acceptible if the second place film wasn't released 9 days ago. Its sad.

It was a generic Hwood offering that had no pulse , save for when the original Spock makes appearances ,now that's pathetic . Don' get me started on the toothless villain who wouldn't scare a preschooler . It wasn't godawful but it isn't the second coming of cinema either . Take a deep breath and say , it was good but not terrific .

Anyway , i was glad to have seen Up , that one delivered and i'm eagerly awaiting T2, should be the big hit of the "summer" .

It's not about making 90 million in a week my friend, it's about whether or not T4 is going to ultimately make back it's $200 million budget domestically and by the looks of it, it'll probably barely scrape by.

It's not about making 90 million in a week my friend, it's about whether or not T4 is going to ultimately make back it's $200 million budget domestically and by the looks of it, it'll probably barely scrape by.

The reason for this being that T4 was by all accounts damn disappointing. Think about it, why is Star Trek making a ton of dough and has legs and T4 is already showing major signs of weakness? Because Star Trek was a good movie and T4 wasn't!

The opening ten minutes of Star Trek are brilliant because the filmmakers get you emotionally invested in the film. That's the focus in the opening. They want to make sure you care about the characters because if you do, you will be along for the ride for the next two hours. T4 had nothing like that, not just in the beginning but throughout the entire film. If anything it made me care less about JConnor because a) he was someone else's bitch through the film and b) he literally sits on his ass for an hour before doing anything. There's nothing to emotionally connect you with Connor and in this weird way it makes it seem that if Connor died, the fight would go on without him no big deal. Bad Editing (the scene where the girl and Marcus Wright cut from being in the old gas station at night to her getting attacked by thugs in the football field), lackluster action sequences and ultimately nothing whatsoever being accomplished with the mythology make it a disappointing flick.

No one was more disappointed then me. I effing love the terminator films but T4 made T3 look like T2. I actually felt bad for Christian Bale while watching it because he seemed to be trying so hard but the film as a whole just wasn't up to par.

All they needed to do was tell the backstory of the Terminator time travel. Take me up to the point of skynet sending back the terminator and the resistance sending back Kyle Reese. Dammit the movie practically writes itself!!! Instead we get some out of left field story that bears no relevance to the mythology or whats at stake. The only way I can see people enjoying the Terminator is if they aren't too familiar with the other films. My sister and her kids who know nothing about cinema or the Terminator films enjoyed it. But where as Star Trek managed to miraculously satisfy diehards and newbies, Terminator made no such effort.
I know some people disagree but hey...the numbers don't lie.

At least we still have TF2 to look forward to...save us Michael Bay...!

Congrats to UP and Star Trek, the two best movies of the summer.

It's nice to see audiences staying away from Terminator, maybe there is some hope left in the movie goer after all.

Regardless of what you say, PG13 horror movies are for pussies. Hell, spiderman and indy 4 would have been PG fifteen years ago, but they get a PG13 rating nowadays. studios know that pg13 means its a bit risque and balsy, but your whole family can come too. so PG13 is a joke. the teenie boppers i saw going to DM2H was enough to turn me away.

PG13 hurt this film, no doubt about it. Guarantee if it was R it wouldve beaten a lot of the R rated horror movies that have come out in the past year, but it only beat 1 -quarantine, barely. you cant contradict the numbers, they dont lie

I'm sorry slimbo0330, but copious amounts of gore and violence do not a good horror movie make (though it usually helps). The movie was fun as hell and delivered some genuine scares, all the while delivering copious amounts of fluids(bodily and otherwise) that while not bloody, were still horrendously disgusting. Also, consider this: save for a few tit shots, the original Halloween, with it's mostly bloodless kills, would more than likely have wound up with a PG-13 nowadays. Fuck, DM2H actually had an old woman's eyeballs exploding out of her skull!

T4 should have bombed, it deserved to. did anyone actually know what it was about before they went into the theater? it was just taking a familiar franchise, capitalizing on the giant robot fuss (transformers), capitalizing on bale's success, and slapping PG13 on it, to get money from a bunch of idiots. the worst part is the people who try to argue that PG13 is intense and most old school action movies would be PG13 by today's standards. this is exactly what studios want moronic audiences to think, when in actuality - PG13 is for pussies.

Yes batman, transformers, james bond, bourne are intense and PG13, but batman, transformers, & bond were all initially created for kids, so PG13 is risque for these franchises anyway.

im also glad to see DM2H didnt do well either. The strangers, Friday the 13, My bloody valentine and even garbage like Saw 5 surpassed DM2H at their respective opening wknds at the box office, it just about matched no star/no director 'quarantine'. so basically, people prefer their horror movies to be R. dont start pussying up the horror genre either. please

I'm beyond happy that Terminator Excretion is flopping hard
Hopefully this will teach studios and produces all over who they should trust with a movie license, much less a beloved franchise like Terminator. That's what you get when you hire a generic director who's only talent is to blow shit up and film it.

Where's your PG-13 money now you fucking cunts?
