Emile Hirsch Following in Leo D's footsteps, Emile Hirsch and Catherine Hardwicke have decided to team up to do a modernized adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet. In the film, Hirsch will star as the titular tortured youngster who must decide whether to kill his uncle in order to avenge his father's death. Producers say they aim to "present the story as a suspense thriller. We want to make it exciting and accessible for an audience today." Because that's worked out so well in the past. It's unclear whether the idea is to make a true adaptation with Shakespearean language a la Leo D's ROMEO & JULIET or whether it's just the story with a modern-day setting a la the Julia Stiles starring O. Either one should work great, though, right? Hirsch can next be seen in the Ang Lee directed dramedy TAKING WOODSTOCK and Hardwicke will next be directing the action adventure sci fi thriller MAXIMUM RIDE.

Extra Tidbit: Hirsch's middle name is Davenport.

maybe if they get a better director. I love Tim Blake Nelson as a actor and especially as a director, i loved The Grey Zone. Baz' take on R&J was awesome too, Leo was awesome. Isn't about time he gets a fuckin Oscar already

cricker... wth???
Only 2 good movies and you put the girl next door in there?? I assume your other one is Into the wild? So Milk wasnt a good movie then? And the dangerous lives of altar boys was pretty good too by the way. I also enjoyed Alpha Dog and Lords of dogtown but those I'll let slide because I know the general consensus isnt on my side.

keep it up and....
Hirsch will be out of hollywood in no time. He has had only 2 good films and only one of those made money(Girl next Door). He better start picking some more commercial stuff (that isnt speed racer)or he will be "that guy I like" which is never who you want to be, because we know what you look like but we never bother to remeber your name.

Uh-oh
I'm neutral, leaning towards "bad idea." I have nothing against Hirsch but this doesn't sound good. The only Shakespeare modernization I've enjoyed was Ten Things I Hate About You.

Not totally necessary
The kid is among the best young actors right now but this may not be a story that needs to be retold.

5th grade reading level
She couldn't even make decent adaptations of a skateboard documentary and young adult chapter book. How is she going to pull off Shakespeare?

Meh.
I'd be down for this usually but they have done Hamlet to death(the best being Kenneth Branagh's version)..I mean the guy wrote other plays.

Besides I'm already enjoying Hamlet stylized in the form of the tv show Sons of Anarchy.

Okay, I'm a pretty big fan of Emile Hirsch. I liked "Thirteen" a lot. But why would they feel like "Hamlet" needs to be retold in a modern setting, at least not a real, Shakespearean version.
