... Pixar is amazing!
by Sturdy

This column is normally reserved for ranting about something that pisses us off in Hollywood, but I wanted to divert from the usual fare and take time to give some credit to a company that is actually doing everything right. It’s easy to complain about something you don’t like, but we don’t always take time to praise something we do. Pixar is an amazing company and although their films receive lavish praise from virtually every critic alive, I’m not sure we, as movie fans, truly pause to appreciate what we’re experiencing with Pixar.

To think; it all started with a lamp

We’ve never seen a string of success to the level of Pixar’s current streak in the history of the movie business. Think about it; Pixar has made 10 films, all of which are spectacular. Now, making 10 great films is not a feat in and of itself, but making 10 consecutive films at the quality in which Pixar is making them, is unheard of. I’m not just talking about box office success, each of their films receives plenty of praise from critics alike. Their appeal is so widespread that even the most pessimistic of movie snobs seems to enjoy their films.

Still the best Pixar film?

How many of you out there were like me after TOY STORY 2 or MONSTER’S INC. and said “well, the next one will probably suck because they’re due for a failure”? Now, we say “it’s Pixar, so of course it’s great”. Even when the storyline is something that I don’t find interesting in the previews (CARS, UP), they still manage to wow me. For the last few films, I was sure they were going to slip up. But they actually seem to be getting better, if that’s possible. Not only is the animation sharper and more impressive, but the stories are more original and the dialogue is even wittier. I like to think of myself as a decent writer, but after watching a Pixar film, I feel like an incompetent ass. They are that good.

Unlikely we’ll agree on the worst

It’s also great to hear people discuss which film they liked the most and which one they liked the least. I’ve been in some pretty heated discussions about which Pixar film is the “worst”, but the funny thing is; Pixar’s “worst” film is still better than 80% of the films released. For me, CARS is the least of the Pixar films, but even after I saw it, I thought it was pretty good. If anything, I complained because I wasn’t blown away by it. The bar has been set so obnoxiously high for them that if they don’t wow you, then it’s kind of a letdown.

They continue to amaze me

So what can Hollywood do at this point to acknowledge the greatness of Pixar? Well, I think the only thing left is to give them an Oscar. And no, I don’t mean the “Best Animated Feature” Oscar because there’s little to no competition in that category. Pixar needs a nomination in the Best Picture category (which WALL-E should have gotten last year). Other than that, the next time you watch a Pixar movie, pause and acknowledge the fact that you are living movie history right now and this kind of hit streak will probably never be matched in our lifetimes.

Pixar is a great movie studio & paved the way for computer animated films but the last good one to me was Cars, I found Ratatouille very boring & well just haven't seen Wall E or Up cuz they didnt interest me, much too adult for Disney. Thats what made the 1st 7 films so special, they were great kid films even adults can like. Glad they are releasing Toy Story 3 & sequels to Monsters Inc & Cars, but why not an Incredibles sequel too?

I think GroundlessNFree hit the nail right on the head. When did it become the staple to, after a film was a success (both critically and commercially) to immediately hash out a follow up to it? When did the majority of Hollywood forget that taking your time to craft a story ultimately will lead to success? Yeah, I get that it's a business and in the end it's about making money, but what about the folks like Robert Rodriguez who use their limited budgets as a means to be more creative and challenge themselves creatively? And there's another thing, why does practically every movie these days have to have a budget of close to hundreds of millions of dollars? Throwing a bunch of money at people does not make them good filmmakers, it makes them lazy; they've got plenty of money to blow, why should they worry about doing any work? George Lucas is living proof of that.

Anyway, long story short, I completely agree with this article, like everyone else. Pixar gives me hope that the people in Hollywood will eventually catch on and start focusing more on the quality of their films than the quantity (which is to say, just making money).

Agreed with stryfe9agb:

Favorite = The Incredibles (thankfully ruins the existence of those real-life Fantastic Four movies)

Least Favorite: Cars (just did not like Lightning McQueen. Would rather see a story based around Doc Hudson. Maybe Cars 2 will retroactively make Cars better?)

Otherwise, Pixar seem like they can do no wrong. If the story is not elevated in their latest endeavor then it is the animation. I bought Cars on Blu-ray for that reason.
Like everyone else, I think I am dreading the moment that Pixar universally fails if that should happen.

I love all their films and they do deserve at least a nomination. The Academy sucks though. Dark Knight should have also been nominated last year. I saw all the nominated movies last year and can say that Frost/Nixon should not have been up there, and although Milk was good it wasn't nearly as good as Dark Knight or Wall-E. Up is probably their best film in my opinion behind Toy Story, and I think this should be the one that makes it to the best picture category. And Cars was a good movie and should have won over Happy Feet.

Pixar is old fashioned moviemaking. They don't try to have a new film every weekend, but instead take their time to make one good film every year or so. My point is this isn't one filmmaker making a movie ever year, but one group of filmmakers. Maybe if it wasn't all of the sudden, one blockbuster after another, movies would be events and not "who made the most money?"

I dont understand all th Pixar love. I mean The incredibles and Finding Nemo were good, but 9 films above 80% or higher. I just don't get it. To me their just boring cartoons. I mean I understand that certain movies, 300 for example, aren't everyones cup of tea, and maybe that's just my problem, but no Pixar film deserved a better rating than The Departed, The Dark Knight, or even Iron Man for that matter. I'm not dissing them though. They do what they do, and it sems to work. I just don't agree.

Pixar is completely different from any other animation studio, obviously, and the fact that they've been able to hold their ground for so long is amazing. Check out the documentary "The Pixar story" to learn how it all happened.
btw, stryfe9agb, Pixar hasn't won best animated every time. The category was introduced in 2001 and since then only 6 Pixar movies have been nominated with only 4 of them winning.

I wish other movie compnay's (Fox) would look to Pixar's example.
If you make good films, the money will also come.

I have to agree with you, Pixar is on an unheard of roll. Every year they manage to out-do themselves, despite my schepasism over that initial first "teaser" (I remember seeing the first teaser for The Incredibles and thinking it was probably gonna be stupid).
Btw, Pixar does win the Oscar for Best Animated Film EVERYTIME...and Finding Nemo was actually nominated for Best Picture in 2004 (lost to Million Dollar Babt...but did win the animated Oscar that year).

Most Favorite: The Incredibles

honorable mention: Ratatouille

Hey it,da: WALL-E won Best Animated Feature Film. It *should* have gotten a Best Picture nomination. It was the best reviewed film released last year, as was Ratatouille in 2007.

I hate to be the one who says this, but Pixar is not that perfect. In my opinion, its biggest flaw is that it only makes movies for kids. How cool would be if Pixar made an R-rated movie.
