Whedon offered Buffy?

When news broke that the director of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (the Kristy Swanson version) was looking to reboot the franchise with a new film outside of the Joss Whedon/TV "Buffy" universe, Whedon fans were understandably pissed. Whedon's "Buffy" universe is treated like gospel so why would Buffy fans want to see a movie where his entire universe was thrown out? There was a backlash that was quite vocal and apparently the producers of the reboot heard those voices loud and clear. So they went to Whedon and offered him a role developing the project. His response, in so many words: go fuck yourself.

Whedon tells Entertainment Weekly that the producers approached his agent after the news broke but that he told them, "I think that's something better left untouched by me." In other words, "I spent a lot of time and effort trying to rebuild the universe after the disaster you turned my original script into. Why would I want to help you tear that universe down?" Whedon adds that he politely wished them well and went on his merry way (and by "merry," I mean really pissed off that this reboot could even happen).

Throughout all of this, let's hope the producers get it through their heads that a BUFFY reboot would just be a bad idea. Unless they get JJ Abrams to direct. People love that guy.

Extra Tidbit: I know Whedon is too nice to ever do this but he really should just come out and tell them to fuck off.

I still say that it is beyond ludicrous to "reboot" Buffy and makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. To me it's on the same level as ending 24 and then a year later instead of getting a feature film off the ground saying "we're going to reboot it and get a new cast!" It is just unfathomable to me. Anyone who actually followed Buffy and Angel knows just how much incredible potential there is for an absolutely epic movie--even possibly a franchise or at least a trilogy. It infuriates me and truly saddens me that they're essentially just going to throw those two series in the trash. What an unbelievable shame.

I hope nobody takes this the wrong way, but does anyone think Whedon is gay? Not to sound like a liberal hippy but I hope he comes out before I die. He makes some of the greatest scifi shit imaginable. (serenity, i'm looking at you) and I think it would be great for social equality if he did.

The way I see it - I'm done with remakes. Unless Hollywood stops being lazy and remakes a film worth remaking - I'm not paying to see it. Hollywood has relied for far too long by this point on the "remake gold-mine" and I am no longer goint to pitch any gold into that mine. It makes no sense.
The problem is that they approached him to do it... as a remake. The movie will sabatogue the small hope we still have of a true follow-up to the Buffy and Angel series, and the success of those shows are the only reasons this movie is even being considered. It makes no sense.

Nice. If there is one person who knows how to deal with vicious blood-suckers, its Whedon. (BTW, I was talking about Hollywood producers, not vampires).

Thats right Joss you tell em!

Hopefully nobody will see this and avoid it like a plague, thats really the only way we will show Hollywood whats up.

Why not have Whedon do a Buffy movie and these "producers" do a Buffy movie and see who comes out on top. Buffy dance off go!!!

I know Joss is too nice a guy to tell them to shove it up their ass and twist but I guess that's what we are for!

Sure it might be cool to see a new Buffy Movie if Joss did it, but he is so talented and has so many other ideas I would rather see him do a new project.

Hell look what he can do with almost no money and no Hollywood backing. Get him some cash and give ...

Just like Firefly....
All the fans of the show will want it to be made into a movie and then all 112 of them will go see the movie. So now we will never see a really good Firefly movie and the same will happen here. There is no real fan base for this that why it was on the WB, not HBO or any other major network. Good luck but I think its a long shot.

He doesn't need to tell us he's separating himself from whatever POS they decide to make, that was already pretty much known.

if they really wanna make this movie, they need to give Whedon full control over the project AND wave enough money in front of Sarah Michelle. The rest of the cast will surely follow(well except maybe Allyson Hannigan and David Boreanaz, since they got good things going right now. but who knows?).
