Indy 5 has a plot? Jun. 16, 2009

Source: BBC

I love Steven Spielberg. I really do. And I obviously love INDIANA JONES. But Shia LaBeouf spoke to the BBC and said that Spielberg has "cracked the story" for a fifth INDIANA JONES film and frankly I'm somewhat surprised. I thought all the talk about INDIANA JONES 5 was just that; talk. I didn't think anyone was really working on it. Let's face it, KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL didn't exactly go over like gangbusters. I won't go on trashing CRYSTAL SKULL because I've reached a zen-like acceptance of that film. I didn't enjoy it but it does not affect my enjoyment of the original trilogy. It was what it was. But a fifth INDIANA JONES film is just adding insult to injury and dredging up some rather unhappy memories.

But then again, who knows? Maybe, after the CRYSTAL SKULL backlash, George Lucas will stay out of it and Spielberg will be allowed the freedom to develop his idea with a writer of his choice. And maybe that idea will charm the pants off of me. I don't want to come off as a Negative Nellie spreading my stinkin' thinkin' on INDIANA JONES 5. It'll, obviously, happen regardless of whether I want it to or not.

So how do you feel? Are you interested in a fifth INDIANA JONES movie? Do you just want them to stop at this point? Click here to head to the BBC and watch the interview where LaBeouf reveals the latest movement on the plot (skip ahead to about the 2:00 mark).

You are all Shia haters because deep down, you wish that it was you swinging on those vines with the territorial monkeys.

But....I'm up for another attempt at an Indy flick. Hopefully as stated Lucas will stay in his ranch eating soup & leave spielberg to do his thing. No Shia LaBeouf but lets have Megan Fox as Indy's daughter. (any reason to have Fox)

I am one of the biggest Indy fans around and had mixed feelings with KOTCS. I read in an interview somewhere that Spielberg was at Lucas' whim most of the time during the entire production. Indy was always Spielberg's "baby" and that was according to Lucas. He had too big of a hand in this last one (it's obvious) and I agree Indy fans need a better movie and I KNOW that if Lucas will just stay the hell out of it, the 'Berg will deliver the goods. I've got faith in him and I honestly doubt it could be worse than Kingdom. I say run with it; we'll always have the original trilogy to fall back on. I say just make a movie version of Fate of Atlantis and make EVERYONE happy! Simple!

Even though I enjoyed the fourth film, there is no doubt that it just wasn't up to par with the previous films. Indy needs a better "last" film.

Indy 4 was a clash between Spielberg & Lucas, and it resulted in an odd film that had moments of greatness mixed with moments of lameness (the lame parts just screamed Lucas). Hopefully this time around there won't be so much of a clash, and more of a "let Spielberg call the shots" attitude.

I felt sorry for Ford when I was watching Indy 4. After all the jibes about his age, he really delivered the goods! Shame Spielberg and Lucas didn't keep up their end of the bargain. I love Spielberg and I (foolishly) believed him when he said it wasn't going to be a cgi-fest. My theory is when it came to the jungle sequences Lucas snuck up behind him, knocked him unconscious and took control of the picture.

Ok, maybe not. But I wanted to see real stunt work - of the kind Martin Campbell brought to Mask of Zorro.

But what ever happens, keep George the hell away from the writing and make sure Harrison is still the star. I'm not paying to see the movie if it doesn't star Ford.

Oh, and lets bring back the Nazis who have been hiding-out in South America since the war. They must still be pretty pissed at Ford for stealing the Ark of the Covenant AND the Holy Grail.

I'm not sure why everyone is only blaming Lucas, lets not forget Speilberg had final cut. Indy 4 had the right tone for an Indy movie, it was just those ridiculous moments... surviving not only a nuclear blast but being thrown miles away in a fridge! What the fuck were they thinking? Shia swinging through trees, ants piggybacking themselves, Marion being able to manipulate vehicles into perfectly balancing on tree branches! Seriously what the fuck were they thinking? BUT ill take a new Indy movie any day. Indy 4 had a lot of things going for it, its just a shame that the things going against it were enough to ruin the movie.
Also I think I'm the only one on the planet who enjoyed the chemistry between Mutt and Indy.

They could do a prequel to Indy IV. Just have the date be earlier (ala Temple of Doom), then you wouldn't need to ever explain where Marion and Mutt went to. I don't think that's necessary though, but they really shouldn't be in this regardless with how heavy the plot of Kingdom focused on them. Or, they can show Indy leaving his home and telling Marion she can't go with him on this one, for some personal reason. It needs to just be Indy alone. And I would definately bring Sallah back. He's been in every other movie, so it would make sense.

But I think fans want to see good gritty details, and not just a typical family friendly movie. Keeps the stakes high and personal, and grounds it more in reality (no nuking the fridge). Limit the series, and put more energy into the fist fights. I never thought of Indy to be the series to end with a big reunion with everybody smiling or whatever. It's about him, so it should be his story and the end should be solely about him.

I don't know if Spielberg really needs to go there, but...

...Harrison Ford was still so spot-on as Indiana Jones, well into his sixties and stil kickin' butt all over with that wise-cracking fun spirit.

All that was wrong with the movie happened in the details of the story. Each of the original three movies had great stories that made them interesting, and a loose grasp on history enough to give credibility to their subjects. The fourth movie played more like "The Mummy" or "King Kong" remake, just trying to one-up itself with more outrageous situations, many of which felt lifted directly from the three previous films. And then Marion drove off the cliff on purpose, which sunk the movie for me.

Ford and Allen are still good though, and still have great chemistry. Bring back John Hurt and give him an actual role, (since Denholm Elliott is dead) and maybe Sallah for good good measure. And enough of the damn Russians! For all the menacing Russian characters in film history, Kruschev-era Communists just aren't as evil as Nazis. The arms race wasn't the Holocaust. And no more damn fencing! (Wait, is Mutt actually going back to school, or not?)

Firstly, you can't really call the first three Indy's a trilogy as each film wasn't a continuation of the same story but its own separate tale, like the old serials that inspired Indy. Secondly, I like the 4th one. Good, not great. Or what happens when George Lucas has too much control.

I say bring on a fifth one. What gives me confindence is that Spielberg came up with the story, not Lucas. Plus, Indy kinda has an every other deal i.e Raiders was awesom, Temple of Doom not as much, Last Crusade awesome, KOTCS, nit as much. And in going with that every other rule I hope Spielberg brings Sallah back. Not too keen on Shia coming back, I always enjoyed seeing a new main sidekick (Sallah being a supporting sidekick) in each new Indy. But I wouldn't mind Short Round coming back.

Aliens are definitely not a far fetched idea in Indy's world. the nazi/commie puncher fuckin saw a man pull another dudes heart out of his body, and said man didnt die from such a graphic event until being lowered into a LAVA WHIRLPOOL!!!! I love Indiana Jones. All four films. I was also a pretentious a'hole at one point, just saying how terrible the fourth film was, but after watching the first three in a row, then the fourth, I came to fruition with it and I too have accepted it. Now I actually enjoy it. I know the argument with the aliens and the skulls, but what people fail to realize is that Indy has some type of unbelievable [link] event happen around him in each film. I must be the only person that thinks that fridge scene in the fourth film was bad ass. F' yea. Lets see a fifth film. Stop being pretentious D'wads. Spielbergs the man. Fords the man. Shias becoming the man and Marion Ravenwood fights like a man. Big ups to Spielberg if he can pull this one off. Oh yeah, Jurassic Park 4 as well. Dinosaurs in Space. Kidding, of course.

I defended Skull to death when I first saw it and I rather enjoyed it. But now that time has passed, the hype has settled...it's still a pretty poor installment.

I agree it might be adding insult to injury by doing a 5th...especially if Mutt and Marion come back. Karen Allen is great, but damn that spark I fell in love with in Raiders was just GONE.

It would take a HELL of a good script and VERY LITTLE involvement from Lucas. Shit, give Darabont a freaking chance. Everyone loves Darabont except George Lucas. I read maybe the first 30 pages of his Indy 4 script and he captured Indy WAAAAAAY better than that Koepp guy. WTF was George smoking?!

I don't blame Harrison and I don't blame Steven. A bad script is a bad script. Lucas needs to realize that. He needs to realize that the overall negative reaction wasn't against Sir Steven's directing or Master Ford's acting. It was that god awful script that had nuked fridges, swinging monkeys and cars tumbling out of trees.

on second thought, maybe they should cast a new younger Indy and take the James Bond route.

well, theyre batting .750. so why not?

however, i also wouldnt mind if they took the james bond route - new indy, new writers, new directors, new producers. i know this sounds sacrilegious, ive always told myself that - but after indy 4, i told myself that maybe it was the best route to be taken.

afterall, James Bond was an inspiration for Indiana Jones. I also like the idea of different love interests in each movie.

Actually, I remember enjoying Indy 4 a bunch when I originally viewed it. It wasn't until afterwords when I read all the complaints on this and similar sites about the plot that in hindsight I began to doubt my initial feelings. I also am not a fan of The Last Crusade and prefer Indy 4 to that film. It is amazing that the same director who made American Graffiti and Star Wars hasn't made anything that approaches that genius since. What happened?

I just wish they could remember what it was about Raiders that we all liked. It was intelligent and epic. Crystal Skulls seemed more like something they shot over a couple of weeks and spent more time working on cute scenes with CGI Prairie Dogs and wacky monkeys. Where was Indy and Marion? I only saw Harrison and Karen. It was nostalgic to see them together again, but to me I felt like I was at an expensive reunion party and no one remembered to bring their characters with them. I love this series and I would be up for another one... if they would just remember why we all fell in love with it in the first place.

Indy 4 was the type of movie that's good to watch on a lazy Saturday afternoon while lounging on the couch. But Steven and George need to get back to making the type of Indy movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat. They need to remember that their audience is intelligent. Don't spoon feed us a watered down plot just for the sake of thrown in more action that doesn't propel the story forward.

At least Indy 4 got us all caught up on what has transpired all the years in between 3 & 4 (95% of which was unnecessary for the story), and now they can hopefully just create a high quality story with suspense, action, mystery, and intelligence.

Hes not putting a gun to your head and forcing you to watch his recent incarnation to a beloved franchise. Even he said himself that no one is going to like Indy 4. I thought personally it was loads of fun, but better then that piece of crap that is Star Wars Episode 1. However, I dont hold it against Lucas, because If it werent for him most blockbuster bad ass movies would suck without his accomplishments.

I liked Kingdom of the Crystul Skulls. Easily the worst Indy, but i dont think its the crapshoot everyone makes it out to be. Really, some of the whining is so unfounded when they try to argue "reason" in a movie series known for being Indy, normal guy, in paranormal circumstances.

I hate to be this cynical, but it felt like Lucas was the weakest link cause a lot of what was wrong with Indy5 was the same with Star Wars prequel overused weak CGI and unusually cheesy characterizations.

And I hate to be a Spielberg fanboy, but he gives the project more faith IMO. It seems Lucas was pulling for Indiana Jones and the Space Men for a long time. Spielberg afterall was responsible for the father/son stuff in Last Crusade while Lucas just wanted to focus on the Grail. And what was the better part of that movie? The father/son stuff.

And Shia doesnt bother me as much either

People mention Lucus' involvement because most would agree that Mr. Lucus has lost his step. He's not the same and he hasn't been for years. Much like Eddie Murphy, George Lucus' best work is far far behind him, and the talent he once had decades ago, may never return.

Raiders is my favorite flick ever (followed by Crusade) and I liked Crystal Skull.

I didn't love it. It's easily the worst Jones, but it was also one of the best times I've had at the movies (I'm just too young to have caught the first 3 on the big screen).

Some parts about it definitely bothered me, like the Monkeys and the anti-climatic third act. But, overall it was a fun flick. And the first act before that A-Bomb was true bliss; felt just like vintage Indy.

I think that given the chance, the holy trinity (Ford, Spielberg, John Williams - not including Lucas in this after all that Anakin bullshit) could do better. Lucas listened with his crappy Star Wars prequels, as Episode III was slightly less crappy than the others. So, if Indy 5 is slightly better than Indy 4, I'm on board 100%.

And I think Spielberg's still got it. He hasn't had a masterpiece since the 90s, but I think Munich and Minority Report are among his best none-the-less.
