Strike Back below!
by: Dave Davis Jul. 26, 2009

If you begged to the heavens for a cable TV series that told a story like GLADIATOR while shamelessly emulating the visual style of 300, well... Starz and Sam Raimi have apparently heard your plea.

The teaser for the upcoming Starz series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" jams in all sorts of the digital overcranking, comic-style environments, sweaty musclemen and gratuitous bloodshed that made 300 a bloody huge success (hell, they even grabbed one of that movie's actors). Historically accurate? Maybe!

Raimi and the producers behind "Xena: Warrior Princess" also brought back their star Lucy Lawless for more swords-and-sandals action. Check out the carnage and official statement below.

Debuting exclusively on Starz, “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” is produced by Starz Media with Executive Producers Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi (Spider-Man and Evil Dead), Joshua Donen The Quick and the Dead), along with Steven S. DeKnight (“Angel,” “Smallville, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”).

The UK-born and Australia-based Andy Whitfield portrays Spartacus, a soldier in the Roman Auxiliary who is taken prisoner. As punishment for defying a Roman Legate, Spartacus is sentenced to die in the gladiator arena. But after surviving numerous fights, his sentence is commuted and is sold as a slave to be trained as a gladiator. A newcomer in the U.S., Whitfield has gained acclaim in numerous Australian drama series (“McLeod’s Daughters,” “Packed to the Rafters,” “The Strip” and “Out of the Blue”) and also starred in the feature film Gabriel, one of the highest grossing films at the Australian Box Office in 2007. He recently wrapped shooting on the Australian feature, The Clinic.

Lucy Lawless is cast as Lucretia, who along with her husband Batiatus (John Hannah of THE MUMMY), own the slave Spartacus and the Ludus (a gladiator camp) where the former soldier learns the ways of the arena fighter. The couple has fallen on hard times financially and has bought Spartacus hoping his fighting prowess will help them regain their status in the brutal world of gladiatorial contests. Among her many roles, Lawless is best known for portraying “Xena: Warrior Princess” in the long-running global hit series, and has appeared in Syfy’s critically acclaimed “Battlestar Galactica.”

Source: Starz

Extra Tidbit: The historical figure was also famously portrayed by Kirk Douglas in Stanley Kubrick's SPARTACUS, and less famously by "ER" star Goran Višnjić in a 2004 TV miniseries. I am Spartacus!

Whatever. LOL.
Nice way to steal all the angles, slo-mo and visual flair from 300. Really, I'd be ashamed. But money fixes that I guess.

300 Pt. 2
Jesus, I'm sure Zack Snyder & Frank Miller want points from this show. I was expecting Gerard Butler to step onto the screen yelling, SPARTANS!! Looks entertaining though. About time STARZ got a good show.

Loooks good..but shameless...
Style jacker alert!!

I can't believe these guys really just did that...it looks undeniably [link] doesn't seem to be a single shred of artistic integrity going on here.

Trailers could be misleading...and that can be case here...but I doubt it. C'mon Hollywood, step your game up!

Who gives a shit if it's not accurate.. It doesn't look like that's what they were going for anyway. I'll take hot guys and gratuitous violence where I can get it. You want serious , go pick up Rome (which also wasn't that accurate either)

"Raimi and the producers behind "Xena: Warrior Princess" also brought back their star Lucy Lawless"

lol. Rob Tapert was the one who created Xena. Sam Raimi was just a co producer. That must hurt.

Could be good but even in the trailer the effects were too distracting. Back up the brutality with good characters and a hint of a story and I'll watch.

Get over it guys. I doubt they will claim this is historically accurate, even Gladiator had its many inaccuracies. This looks like it will be a good watch full of blood and violence, something the Romans would enjoy themselves.

there is a time and a place for the style of 300, and this is not the time or the place. I may have been interested if they kept a more realistic style like that of Gladiator, but this just looks like trash.

WHAT A RIPOFF
just shameles, and even in these small bursts of action you can tell they copy Sniders style without any finesse. Still, main actor looks good, depending on the story it could be fun.

This looks like crap. I would watch Gladiator 200 times over before giving this a chance.

Holy fuck. Looks fucking awesome. Can't wait. Rome was so boring, but this one actually could be pretty epic... Sure, some stuff looks too much like greenscreen, but so did 300.. and this is just a small series... But looks like something bug. Didn't even know about that one... now one of the most wanted in series.

Wow. Except for the numerous shots of various women in varying stages of undress (or better, moving provocatively close to each other)...

...that looked pretty awful.

TROY, 300, ROME, and the decent GLADIATOR shoved into a blender and run for three spins equals...loads of manly-man action...with British accents.

They're from New Zealand. How do you confuse their accents with the British?
