...stop letting TV steal your thunder!
by J.A. Hamilton

When I was in High School, I often wondered what would happen once Hollywood ran out of ideas. And about ten years ago it started to happen. Back in 98 Hollywood began taking a closer look at comic books and despite Joel Schumacher’s anal violation of the BATMAN franchise, they rolled the dice with BLADE. With BLADE’s success came another venue to pump for mad sums of cash. In the meantime, a tremor of discontent was thundering through the acting community and another ball started to roll. In 2001 Kiefer Sutherland launched a gritty little masterpiece called 24, and with this show’s stellar success (at a time when TV's popularity was at an all time low) came a the dawn a new day: The rebirth of Televison. And what a difference ten years can make.

Blade is still one of my all time favorite flicks

If you’d told me then that ten years later TV would be booming and movies would be all but in the toilet, I’d have not only laughed at you, but probably slapped you in the face for spewing blasphemy. But here we are, some ten years later, and that’s ALMOST the case. Shows like 24, CSI, LOST, PRISON BREAK, SUPERNATURAL, HEROES, SMALLVILLE, DEXTER, ENTOURAGE and even TRUE BLOOD have amassed a very strong fan base that continues to grow, making TV all the rage. Hollywood has limped on, sucking the life out of comic book genre, scoring big laughs with Judd Apatow, converting countless novels and even managed to make a decent run of the video game turned movie franchise RESIDENT EVIL. But if this summer has told me anything, it’s that sequels and comic book flicks won’t appease crowds forever.

Dexter is about the coolest serial killer EVER

What makes matters worse for Hollywood is that while they’re scrambling to remake, reboot, re-imagine, rehash and reload every movie to ever turn a profit or attract an audience (be it old OR new), TV just finished up one of its best seasons ever. An increasing number of actors and producers are turning to TV as well, it was subtle at first, but now you rarely see shows without at least one. This season’s LIE TO ME (for example), featuring Tim Roth was fantastic and got picked up for a second season, as did the kick ass Joshua Jackson led FRINGE. And what’s Hollywood got on the horizon? They’re remaking THE KARATE KID, CLIFFHANGER, ROBOCOP and THE CROW, squeezing out dozens more sequels and moving on to comic book characters that most people haven’t even heard of like THE GREEN LANTERN.

If you stare at this too long, you'll go blind

Sure we have our IRON MAN 2, the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET reboot and the last two HARRY POTTER flicks, but these ALL fit the demographic in question. TV, on the other hand, is sporting stuff like THE PRISONER, starring Ian Mckellan and Jim Caviezel (which admittedly is a TV series remake but still looks cool). SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND will be another guilty pleasure, especially if you liked GLADIATOR. HBO’s HUNG features one of my favorite underrated actors, Thomas “The Wang” Jane, and it seems to be doing well. And speaking of HBO, they’ve also wrangled up Sean Bean to lead George R. R. Martin’s fantasy epic A GAME OF THRONES which promises to be THE next big fantasy hit. And these are but SOME of the aces up TV’s sleeve.

Winter is coming to HBO

I never thought I’d say this but I’m more excited about Fall’s TV lineup than I am about what’s on the way to theaters. Sunday’s my favorite night with TRUE BLOOD and ENTOURAGE’s new seasons (which are both excellent). Now I’ll admit that TV will always have one up on movies due to an entire season’s worth of building it’s plots and intrigue, but that doesn’t give Hollywood the right to just drum forward on autopilot. I enjoyed most of this summer’s film lineup, but it was the underdogs like MOON, THE HANGOVER and DISTRICT 9 that really stood out in my eyes. The reality here is that Hollywood is gut shot and dying a slow, agonizing death and WE the viewers are the ones suffering for it. And yes, the good flicks are still making big bucks in theaters...for now, but Hollywood really needs to shape up because with each passing day more fans, actors and producers are defecting to TV. And honestly, I can’t say I blame them.

You know i have been wondering this after reading the article. Are the writers drawn to TV because it can make them more money? Or is it because they do potentially more writing in genres that they are more interested in.

Now I have no idea how much money they get paid, but say for example they got 100k per episode they wrote one season of 22 episodes is 2.2 mil. thats wicked and steady income. instead of writing a couple of movies, that may or may not get picked up and may or may nt make you money, but again i dont know what a writer gets paid, if someone has some insight that woudl be fantastic.

Debatable was a nice way of saying useless. Just because you put "Don't take this personally" at the start of your rant doesn't mean you were being polite or constructive. Attacking someone's taste in movies just because it's different from yours is not polite. And calling someone a weak writer is far from constructive. You can barely write a legible post, and you're calling someone else a weak writer!

Constructive critisism is not nitpicking or being rude. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even you, but to go beyond that and attack a person is entirely different and very immature.

First off, about the spelling, i'm sorry but english it's not my first language.
As for my opinion, of course it's debatable, all opinions are, that's why they're opinions and not facts. If you think there's only great TV shows and crappy movies to the point tv is "stealing hollywood's thunder" fine, I don't find that to be the case.

As for my critics of the author I tried to be polite and offer constructive criticism, nothing more.

Hey Wickedbug, we heard your debatable opinion, if you don't like this writer's work, DON'T READ IT. Nobody's being crucified here, and as far as bringing up previous writers who may or may not have said things you disagree with (James Thoo), that's just in poor taste on your part. Grow the fuck up.

PS: It's kinda hard to take someone's opinion seriously (yours) when your post is full of spelling mistakes.

To further my previous comentary. I think this article in particular is mixing apples and oranges by, not only comparing to diferent mediums, but also by comparaing some great TV shows with some crapy movies.

There are also a ton of bad scripted tv shows (don't even get me started on reality shows) as well as needles remakes (90210, Melrose Place), filme adaptations (eastweek, parenthood) and spin offs (the new NCIS) that could easily be compared to some great movies to make the opposite point of this article.

I mean no disrespect, I just think maybe the author (from what I've read of him) still has a lot to improve as a writer. I hope he gets the chance to do it, I just think he slhound't be doing it in front of a live audience this size that can easily crucify a writer (like it hapened to James Thoo)

cant help but agree with the majority of the article but its no surprise as TV has always given us some great TV shows, especially the premiuim channels like HBO, Showtime, AMC, & F/X. HBO has been putting out great shows for well over 20 years from The Garry Shandling Show, Not Neccessarily the News Dream On, Tales From The Crypt, Oz, Six Feet Under Under, even Sex & The City & last but not least The Sopranos. Today we have shows like CSI 24 Nip/Tuck, The Shield True Blood Dexter & Sons of Anarchy & they are all top quality shows

So there really is no argument about TV versus the movies on which is the better choice for entertainment, but yes Hollywood has been slacking lately as this has been the weakest lineup for movie in years. Also some people just need to relax and not take everything so serious & realize TV & movies are simply just forms of entertainment & nothing more, no need to attack someones opinion.

Come'on guys, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it doesn't HAVE to match yours. WickedBug,I think you were a little harsh (my opinion), although I give you props because you were polite about it.. its just that this article in general (C'mon Hollywood) would be difficult to write for the simple reason that its whole purpose is to bitch about something and insight a response from the readers.. the writer is going to piss someone off every time, because obviously, and thank god, not everyone agrees on the same things. If you disagree that's fine, but constructive criticism would probably help him/her [the writer] out a lot more than telling them they suck. What are your ideas of topics the writer could cover?? I say give the guy a chance.

As for the article, I’m glad to have both TV and movies, I’m a fan of Dexter, and have yet to try out TrueBlood. and as said below, nothing beats going to a movie in the theater... Yes, this summer has been disappointing for sure, but Smooveluv and Hoylehaw brought up an excellent point; things do seem to come in cycles. As for remakes.. well, I agree with Kitanna… I’m sure we’re all pretty sick of’em, but in this day and age, originality seems to hard to come by, but it sure makes us appreciate it even more when it comes around! :)

Dear J.A. Hamilton, don't take this personally butI think you're one of the weakest writers on this site. For some reason they have you reviewing dvds and the result is 5 stars to movies like How to loose a guy in 10 days and The Fast and The Furious.

TV and Movies are two very diferent mediums despite the aparent similaraties.

Also there are tons of great movies getting made all over the world sothis article maskes no sense. if anything I'm glad to have great tv show (as long with great movies) getting made. Smallville, Heroes, CSI and Prison Break are not among those great shows. Guilty Pleasures? Maybe, but def. not in the same league as Sopranos, Dexter, The Shield, The Wire, Rome, Band of Brothers, etc, etc

Don't take this personaly I wouldn't mind seeing you writing news on the site, I just think you're suited to review movies and opinion articles

Though I would still tend to disagree as TV seems to be dominated by the utter steaming dung pile that is "reality tv". Remove ALL reality TV shows and put on quality scripted shows, and maybe I'd actually start watching tv again. I don't think that there's cause for complaint here. Cable and premium channels are finally stepping up their game. I don't think the movie industry is getting worse necessarily. Quality and watershed years come and go in cycles. If anyone thinks that the industry has irrevocably "gone to shit" - you either are ignorant of previous fallow years, or you've just started becoming a movie fan, and don't know your shit yet.

For people whining about network TV - that's not where the innovation is happening (for the most part). HBO, Showtime, AMC, FX - there's interesting stuff happening all over. Networks are certainly getting some residual creative lift - when they aren't afraid to take a chance on something besides "reality" garbage.

This isn't cause to condemn movie studies, but to give credit to the television writers and producers who are creating better projects, and the networks for giving them the freedom to do so. The move for big screen stars to the small screen reflects that these actors understand there are new, exciting opportunities that weren't available on TV before.

Hating one medium, TV or Cinema, and loving the other is myopic and stupid - and a great way to have your opinion disregarded.

I'm not a big watcher of TV. I'm not very big into theater-going lately, too much other stuff gets in the way. But frankly, network television can only go so far. I'll admit I'm a little surprised Tim Roth got signed for a TV series, but I caught that show one night, and while the premise is interesting, it mostly didn't do it for me. When I've caught stuff on cable (I don't have cable) it's a whole different story. Admittedly this has been a pretty underwhelming summer of movies. But that happens. I'm pretty sure two years ago I thought the line-up was pretty weak for blockbusters. Last year it was like every movie kicked ass, over the summer (not really) but this year not so much.

I like movies because they have a certain feel, i like tv shows because they present an opertunity to thoroughly explore characters. Tv shows are becoming so well made now, the line between film and TV is begining to blur, example, comparing Twilight and True Blood. Its pretty obvious which one is better. True Blood pwns and is probably being made at the fraction of the cost of feature films. Audiences are becoming more sophisticated and arn't swallowing down anymore of the crap that hollywood is dishing out. I'm talking to you Fox.

I agree. I mean, I'm looking forward to the new series (I know it's technically a re-boot) of V just as, if not more so, than any film this fall. Also, I tend to get WAY more entertainment out of the television shows I get off of my Netflix than the movies I get. 9/10 times the movies are ho-hum medium, or pretty bad. 9/10 times the TV series are outstanding.

There's still nothing like going to the theatre (for me at least), so I'll continue to go and appreciate gems like District 9 even more, WAY more, in theatres. But whatev, point is, TV is more original and more entertaining lately.

I just started True Blood, and after not expecting much due to all the hype....gotta say, entertained yet AGAIN by television. Great show so far.

I'm sure this doesnt need to be said, but....TV rules.
