Universal showed their not concerned about the box-office potential of FUNNY PEOPLE as it relates to the success of Judd Apatow as they've signed the writer-director to a three-picture deal just a few days before his latest film hits theaters. While FUNNY likely won't bring the money that KNOCKED UP or 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN did, Apatow told me when I spoke to him that FUNNY PEOPLE is the kind of movie he'll "only get to make once" and that given his career "it wouldn't be inappropriate to make the dumbest movie ever made after this."

Apatow hasn't even started work on his next project yet but Universal seems confident that nurturing a relationship with the prolific director is a good idea. They've distributed all three of his directorial efforts and, through this lucrative new deal, will distribute the next three. This deal, I should point out, does not necessarily include any Apatow produced projects though his only film set for 2010, GET HIM TO THE GREEK, is set up at Universal (though he previously produced six movies at Sony Pictures).

Apatow has a number of pictures in the works including an untitled Kristen Wiig project, which he mentioned will be his next into production after GREEK wraps. But where will he go after FUNNY PEOPLE? And will Seth Rogen come along for the ride?

Extra Tidbit: Judd was on the 1992 "Young Comedians Special" with Jeneane Garofalo and Ray Romano.
