As it turns out, G.I. JOE is shaping up to NOT be the worst movie ever made, if early reviews of the film are to be believed. It’s supposed to not take itself too seriously (a definite must for the powersuit/ninja/nanobot plotline) and is reportedly just a fun, escapist experience.

So with the hope that audiences agree and show up, director Stephen Sommers firmly believes there will be a sequel and just confirmed as much during an interview with ComingSoon where he also talks about his next project, TARZAN:

“There's a couple, but mainly I'm getting very excited about doing "G.I. Joe 2." I'm working on "Tarzan" at Warner Brothers and they're a bunch of great people. (It will be) live action but we'll contemporize it. It'll still be a period movie, but it's almost like "The Mummy," it took place in Ancient Egypt and the '20s and '30s, but it felt more contemporary, that sort of deal.”

So there you have it, G.I. JOE 2 and a retro themed TARZAN. With JOE no longer looking like a disaster, and Sommers taking over TARZAN from Guillermo del Toro, things are looking up for the man. At this rate, the next thing you know he’ll be tapped to direct HALO or something.

I'd be hard pressed to think of any director who'd make me want to see a Tarzan movie, but Sommers sure isn't it. I'm glad Del Toro's got better things to do.
GI Joe might be a laugh though.

Lady Jaye
I'm curious if they even going to include Lady Jaye in the next movie. Really it's a cop out to include Scarlet when she's hardly even used in the film.

As I've said before, not a fan of Sommers, though he, at least, seems to know where he stands. Compared to Bay, you'll never see Sommers attempt a film like Pearl Harbor and Sommers' films (though weak) don't ooze his ego all over the place like Bay's.

Whoa, there, razgriz21, you did not just say what I think you just said... So... Sommers just directs live-action cartoons and is different from Bay how? I'm no huge fan of either; both have made some fun films (The Rock, The Mummy) and both have ruined potential gold (The Island, Van Helsing). Neither has ever directed a film with even the slightest modicum of depth. Frankly, both will continu...

Way to defend your hack-job career! New to this site and will soon be adding a photo to profile. In a heartbeat Sommers I would say to your face how I feel about your approach to filmmaking. In a heartbeat. Sure, I haven't seen this thing yet, but going on Sommer's track record ...

In a heartbeat. Sure, I haven't seen this thing yet, but going on Sommer's track record and how easy an acceptable version of GI Joe would be, I won't be surprised with how ridiculous it turns out. Sommers and the guy who did Daredevil and Ghost Rider probably hang out at Dave and Buster's. I miss James Thoo!!!

I still think this looks pretty crappy
I know it's gotten pretty decent reviews from the online community but it only has 10 reviews on RT, out of what will eventually be 120+. I've betting that score drops off pretty quickly once it's released to "rotten" or barely fresh (low 60's) at best.

This "news" is just the same story we hear each time this sort of movie is released. The week of the release, there is talk of sequel, this reeks of the same old publicist baloney.

Same with the positive reviews this movie is getting now that it was reviewed poorly and got its reputation. Don't believe everything you read there, either. The big critics haven't all chimed in yet,...

I wish this movie the best, and I know it is JoBlo's job to report the "movie news", but c'mon, people. This is not a news story. This is publicist sound bite stuff for the week of the movie release.

And the dumbing down of America has taken full affect; people dont waste your money on this shit. Dont give this film or director credit it doesnt deserve, otherwise we're looking at nothing but sequels and unoriginal comic book derived ideas with whiz bang slo-mo effects for the next decade or three years if the Aztecs we're correct. 'Nough already !

I find it funny because I stuck with the film from the beginning (well, mostly the release of its trailer after Star Trek). Haven't flip-flopped or anything, just thought it looked like a mindless, kick-ass summer action movie ever since that trailer. If it delivers, shame on all you doubters.

Not so sure about that Tarzan movie. I wouldn't want to fuckin' see that.

I also agree with extra tidbit. I have to admit that at first I think G.I. Joe's new movie is going to suck. But latter trailers, words of mouth, and various online reviews that I've read, I'm sure this is going to be a fun popcorn movie, like the first The Mummy. Can't wait to check it out!

Not the biggest fan of his films, but I agree with the extra tidbit. Most of the people that rip on him wouldn't have the balls to say it to his face in person.
