In today’s Hollywood culture of "adapt anything into a movie that you happen to remember from a while ago," it should come as no surprise that CBS is now turning GUNSMOKE into a feature film. The show was a massive hit in the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. It spanned 20 seasons and was the longest running primetime series on TV until “The Simpsons” beat it out this year.

CBS has tapped NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS scribe Gregory Poirer to write the script, which promises to be “set in the same American West as the original but will feature a contemporary look and modern action twists.” Set in the American West but with a contemporary look? What does that mean? Cowboys wearing Banana Republic button downs? And I’ll interpret “modern action twists” to mean bullet-time effects and exploding helicopters wagons.

GUNSMOKE follows the adventures Marshal Matt Dillon, Galen “Doc” Adams and saloon-owner Miss Kitty Russell whose “modern twist” will probably a large pair of breasts spilling out of a corset. I don’t think this look is going to fly in 2010.

Extra Tidbit: Are there any shows on TV now that you think could last for 20 seasons? At its going rate, "Smallville" is halfway there.

I'd love to know how many guys Matt Dillon shot over those 20 years.

What if Matt Dillon plays Matt Dillon?
Wouldn't that be wonderful?

Cool idea!
You know what, I would seriously enjoy seeing a Gunsmoke movie, but like all "TV to Movie" ideas...the casting might not match the original cast..instead of celebrating and using the oringinal ideas, it could hurt it..explain Wild Wild West (Will Smith) or The Honey Mooners, Lost in Space, etc etc. Basically, if you are going to make a movie based on a good classic TV show..do it right and it w...

I agree with SykkBoy
If they can make it a Western in the vein of what has been coming out since "Unforgiven" till now with "3:10 to Yuma" and "Appaloosa" I'll be fine with it but it just seems a little too unnecessary at the moment but Hollywood, who once had good ideas, now seems like it has to adapt everything from the 70's-early 90's into a movie or remake something from those eras too. Oh well... bring it on I...

Oh well... bring it on I guess. I don't particularly know who could play each role but I am still psyched for Carahan's "A-Team" movie.

Bit of useless information, Quentin Tarantino was named after Burt Reynolds character in Gunsmoke.

Hmmm
I wouldn't mind a Gunsmoke movie, but I wouldn't want to see it stylized or modernized...just give us a damn good western with Marshall Dillon and have Doc not really do much doctoring and I'll be fine.

I'll admit to only seeing a couple of episodes, but this struck me as a really good show (beats the shit outta "Bonanza"). On that note, if it means we get a really decent western, then I'm all for it. If we get a really shitty western that wants to be something other than what it is, THEN I'll call foul.

Gotta agree about 'Bonanza'.

'Gunsmoke' was, to me, a proper Western...but 'Bonanza' was like the Beverly Hills Cowboys or something; all these rich guys, living in their huge mansion on their family's vast estate, that always seemed very Not-Western to me.

Ugh, bad idea. If they decide to tweenify it, like the CW did to the Lone Ranger, it will fail big time. Now if they can get the people who did the Lonesome Dove series then it might work.
