Extended Potter?

The most recent HARRY POTTER film, THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE, ran a pretty hefty 2 hours and 33 minutes long. Normally I think that'd be right at the maximum for a kid-friendly fantasy pic but apparently the HARRY POTTER films are about to get longer.

Rope of Silicon found a note in the latest MPAA bulletin that HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE (EXTENDED VERSION) had been rated PG. Curious they got in touch with a rep from Warner Home Video who confirmed that not only will SORCERER'S STONE get the "extended" treatment but all of the POTTER films will be getting special extended releases in the future.

There seems to be some confusion online whether these will be theatrical or DVD releases. At this point, only a DVD release is confirmed though there is a possibility that WB could roll out an extremely limited release right around the time DEATHLY HOLLOWS is about to hit theaters. Also unconfirmed is exactly how much content is going into these "extended versions." Is it something substantial or just an extra seven minutes? Stay tuned for more as the news develops...

Extra Tidbit: Are you concerned about this being another clever "double dip" by Warner Home Video?

I always prefer to see story intended length, not box office cuts. I always have despised studios for dicatating how long WE the viewer want to sit watching their movies. They generally want us to like them right? That's always the cue to make more..and we are handing them are paychecks every week to view our favorite characters. Do we know what Deathly Hallows will be titled in it's split version? Parts 1 and 2? I fear I may have missed an article about this.

Woo hoo!
I've been waiting for news on this for a while. ABC Family Channel always shows extended cuts of the films but I've been surprised there hasn't been a DVD/Blu-ray release of them. Great to hear it's official.

if it adds to the story then it'll make a great collection on dvd. I wonder if any of these versions have hit tv because i swear i've seen an extended sorcerer's stone.

Finally. I figured they would eventually release extended editions, but hadn't heard any official announcements. I know HP and the Order of the Phoenix's original run time was over 3 hours and Goblet of Fire had a similar original run time. There is an enormous amount of footage that has been described in the past during the filming of the various films, but nobody has ever seen. I'm stoked for...

If you have the Lord of the Rings extended DVD sets then you know how cool it is to have those extra 20 minutes per film. In those additional scenes, you actually get more of the story. If the Harry Potter people add more minutes, do we get padding or more story? Will it tell a better story or will if me cinematic shots of Hogwarts? If the Harry Potter people add more minutes, do we get padding or more story? Will it tell a better story or will if me cinematic shots of Hogwarts? So it all depends on what they add and if they make it worthwhile. My guess is that you will see several Potter DVD releases and or sets over the next few years. I can think of at least 4 versions of the complete saga right now and Deathly Hallows has yet to be released.
