No Jack for Clooney

Back in July, as people were trying to figure out the mess that cause the collapse of the Brad Pitt baseball drama MONEYBALL, rumors began to surface that George Clooney was interested in starring in a Jack Ryan reboot for Paramount. Back when we ran the news it was reported that Clooney was looking for some quality commercial material to help balance out the BURN AFTER READING and LEATHERHEADS of the world. But before Clooney can get too excited, he's not in Paramount's plans for the film.

The producer of the as yet untitled upcoming Jack Ryan movie Lorenzo di Bonaventura spoke to MTV and said that while there is a script in active development at the studio for an upcoming Jack Ryan film, the project they're working on has a much younger Jack Ryan than the almost 60-year-old Clooney. Said Lorenzo, ""It's for a young Jack Ryan. I love George, but it's not written for a man of his age. It's written for a guy in his early 30s."

Didn't they already try this experiment with Ben Affleck in SUM OF ALL FEARS? Wasn't what we liked about the earlier Jack Ryan films was that they were established older men like Harrison Ford and Alec Baldwin?

Extra Tidbit: There were rumors a while back that Ryan Gosling was in talks to star as Jack Ryan and perhaps his name might come again.

Am I alone in thinking GC would make the perfect Hannibal Smith in the A-Team reboot?

I can just see him holding a stogie and saying "I love it when a plan comes together!".

I agree, didn't they learn from having a younger guy in Sum Of All Fears which was horrible. You need an established, mature guy. You do not see Bond going young and they still make CASH!

Too bad
I think Clooney would of been a good Jack Ryan. I think Josh Brolin, Leonardo Dicaprio, and James Marsden would all be good for that role.

I still like the idea of James Franco as Ryan, not because he fits the part, per say, but because he rocks every movie he's in.

Case in point: Spider-Man 3. Hated movie, sure, but everyone I know loves his humorous delivery of lines that almost seem to mock the film. After he tells Peter he's snogging MJ at the Diner(I can't remember if that's really what they are discussing) he...

Saul would be proud.

I was kinda hoping they;d go with Clooney. Honestly I think thins franchise was really hurt when they put Harrison Ford in the role. Not that he was bad by any means, but he did two movies as Jack Ryan, and now younger actors just don't work for the role. Hence my hope they'd cast George Clooney. There are younger actors who could be right for the role, but their names haven't been batted aroun...

Not only is Clooney NOT almost 60, but his film "Burn After Reading" made $60 million in the U.S. alone on a $37 million budget. If you want to list an actor's flop, Mike, try picking on a movie that actually flopped.

A few things...
Clooney isn't "almost 60". He's not even 50 yet.

Baldwin was in his early 30s when he played Ryan.

I like Clooney, and he no doubt would've been "good" in the movie, but I don't think he's really right for the role either. I'll probably always think of Ford as Ryan.
