In a truly surprising Monday morning development, The Walt Disney Company announced that it has purchased Marvel Entertainment for the whopping price of $4 billion. According to the press release, "Disney will acquire ownership of Marvel including its more than 5,000 Marvel characters." Robert Iger, President of Disney said the deal combines "Marvel's strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney's creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties."

This obviously has a big impact on the future of the Marvel characters. As of now Marvel partners with Universal Studios and their "Islands of Adventure" including rides based on Spider-Man and Hulk. And obviously Marvel has a number of movies in development at studios other than Disney. I don't believe we'll see any big impact on either in the near future but what it means further down the line remains to be seen.

This news is still developing so as we learn more (and what it means to the future of Marvel), we'll update this story accordingly. For now, if you're interested, you can read the full press release here.

UPDATE - On the shareholder conference call, Disney said that all current and future film deals that were negotiated by Marvel will stay in place. They feel those deals were well developed and Disney has no intentions of trying to reclaim any of those properties for their film unit. For the time being. They do believe that it is "in our best interest if over time we ended up as the sole distributor of these theatrical release films."

UPDATE 2 - When asked about the possibility of a Marvel/Pixar team up, it was revealed that John Lasseter met with the key creative staff at Marvel last week and everyone got "pretty excited very fast." They said there is a "definite opportunity" for that kind of collaboration and that "exciting products" will come from that partnership.

I'm curious/afraid that we wont be seeing characters explore darker sides of themselves. Are we going to get to see a rated R movie if need be or are we going to just get a movie that pushes the pg-13 boundries? Some characters aren't nice or pleasant for the kiddies and i wouldn't want them to soften them up, ya know? I agree with the pirate's comment, but would disney go as hard as say a Puni...

As others have pointed out, Disney owns Miramax, which owns Dimension, and neither of those have any qualms about releasing R-rated flicks. So, technically, the films they've made been under the Disney banner. Don't worry, it'll be okay.

If only I bought more.
Financially I'm thrilled. However as far as the quality of movies is concerned well we will have to see. AS Disney as turned into pumping out crap over and over again. *cough* "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" "G-Force" more and more garbage, so I'm not holding my breath.

Brer B8a brings up a good point regarding the Pirates flicks. Plus, it's not like many of the Marvel flicks were really hardcore to begin with. I'm okay with this. Look at it this way; at least Fox didn't buy them. THEN I'd be having a shit storm.

Grow Up Losers!
The only ones who are or will be pissed off at this Disney/Marvel merger are the Babymen who are afraid all their precious comics will be ALL AGES again! Comics were for all ages across the board when I grew up. They should be again.

This was a smart movie on Disney since it's the licensing of these characters are more valuable than the publishing end.

As long as they don't mess with the comics (and I doubt Disney will get involved with that side of things) I think this can only mean good things. DC have been leading for years with their animated spin offs thanks to a major studio being behind them. Although some of the Marvel cartoons have been good, they've always seemed a little cheap in comparison to Batman the Animated Series or Justice League. Now that there's the potential for two of the very best animation houses in the world (Disney and Pixar) to be producing Marvel cartoons, I think we're all in for a treat. Whilst I'm concerned at the way that a minority of big corporations are buying up everything, I have a feeling this may be good news for Marvel's cross-media platform as a whole. Just as long as they don't f*** with my Punisher Max!

Why would Disney buy Marvel? Uhh, to make money maybe? I don't really see this as a problem, we'll still be getting the upcoming Marvel projects and maybe even really well funded other stuff. A Pixar/Marvel venture sounds pretty rad to me.

People need to relax. Disney =/= Fox. Disney has owned Miramax for some time now when Miramax has been releasing Kill 1 & 2, No Country For Old Men and Doubt, among others. I highly doubt they'll stick their hands in like Fox normally do. IF anything, a possible team-up between Marvel & Pixar is pretty exciting.

Disney owns a lot more than Disney
Too early to tell, but there is a lot of potential upside. Prying Fox's fingers off of the X-Men franchise anyone? Keep in mind Time Warner owns DC, and as a result of that partnership we got all those great DC cartoons, three great movies, and 'Watchmen' certainly pulled no punches.

I don't think this is a bad idea, it's a financial win for both sides. Disney's not going to homogenize Marvel's properties, why? Disney will understand the fan base for Marvel's properties and why risk alienating a fickle predominately male (which Disney doesn't really have) fan base. Plus, a Fantastic Four Pixar movie would be justice done right.

We all know where the damn money is so let's just get ready to witness the mega shift in history aand s**t and see how well Iron Man fares when he has to face...oh no...Jaafar!!

Well to look at it in an actual rational manner, I believe that Disney may already have the "kid" audience covered with Pixar and everything else. Also, if you think the big money is coming 'only' from kids' flicks than what about The Dark Knight and Iron Man. The way I see it is that comic movies are taking over and Disney wants a piece of it. Furthermore, to efficiently sell a comic movie for a good profit it's become clear that setting it towards an older audience really pays off in the end with critics, fanboys, and the average audience alike.

Although, I could see them doing side project animated movies with Marvel characters, but as long as Disney doesn't take Marvel's creativity away (as many have said), particularly for the most popular characters, than I have no problem with all of this.

But in the last 30 years to have only a handful of hits when they have such a rich background of property shows you that Warner Bros. execs have their heads firmly planted in their asses when it comes to bringing comics to the big screen. Not to mention that they resigned Didio to a three year contract, when he is undoubtably the worst editor DC Comics has ever had. Just based on sales alone.

I'm looking at the entire history DC has had under WB (since 1969), and it really hasn't been a sparkling one. More than anything, it's been wasted.

Disney is not going to fuck up your characters folks. Do you guys not realize that Disney is the distributer for most of Tarantino's films, they just distribute it under Miramax. If there is going to be a bloody and gory marvel film it would most likely also be distributed under Miramax. Stop worrying.

I'm not worried about Disney destroying Marvel characters, I'm just sick of seeing every other company being bought up by one of the Big Five. Disney, Sony, News Corporation, Time Warner, Viacom. It's all shaping up to be just like the Umbrella Corporation. And you know what that means: ZOMBIES.

This is actually worse than when Warner Bros. bought DC Comics. Homogenized and sanitized for your children.

I wonder when we get to see the Thor musical dance number.

How has Warner Bros. buying DC Comics been a bad thing? By saying that, you're stating that both "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" sucked. Is that the case?

Disney has lots of money and marketing geniuses. As long as they stay out of the development and creative process' of the films, I'm really happy.

Dude, the last "Punisher" was loaded with violence and it was one of the biggest pieces of shit I've ever seen. Even without Disney, these Marvel flicks can still be shit.

Disney is going to neuter the Marvel characters we like. Face the truth. No more Punisher or Iron Man.

No more bloodshed in our comics and movies.

Instead, we'll be getting force fed Spider-Man, Fantastic 4, and everything else kid friendly.

This is bad news for us. We'll probably get animated musical movies involving our Marvel characters (do not want).

I'm going to miss Punisher, Blade, and other violent Marvel characters. We'll probably get force fed Fantastic 4 crap.

It is disney the company buying marvel, not disney the studio buying it, Miramax is owned by disney and they have pretty good movies under their name (ie. There will be blood, no country for old men). I'm not saying that probably not going to milk the company for all its worth, it's just we don't know what they will do right now so we shouldn't judge. What's with all the negatvie?
You make it seem like Mickey Mouse is Adolf Hitler himself. Disney, for the most part, is legit. Does that mean Universal Studios can't use the Marvel property anymore?

As long as Disney isn't involved in the creative process. Disney has a lot of money, perhaps this was a move to get some of the marvel properties back. For instance spider-man, maybe even the xmen. I'm sure Fox and Sony are saying "Oh fck, call the lawyers and keep them on hold!" right about now. I like Disney more then Fox and Sony, well a hell of a lot more. So it might turn out good. Oh great. Disney is going to rape all my beloved Marvel Characters and ruin everything. GODDAMNIT! Is there any justice in the world? I can just see it now: Endless sequels that no-one gives a crap about and horrific crossovers within the Disney empire. Example: Pocahontas meets The Avengers. Excuse me while I go vomit.

"WTF!?" Seriously!
It's hard to imagine what could come from this. I know for a fact they'll likely milk the merchandising by producing an "Iron Mickey" toy of some sort when IM2 is released. And a "Donald Dulk" toy to follow.

Imagine, if you will:
*Donald Duck Voice* "ohhhhhhhh...! You wouldn't Like me when I'm angry. BAGHAGHAGHAH!!!"

I had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn't April fools day... this is a strang development indeed. Will be keeping an eye on the story but I'm honestly so shocked that I don't have an opinion yet.. I wonder if Universal will have to drop the Marvel theamed rides from their parks?
