...keep the mature anime coming!
by J.A. Hamilton

I have no problem with Pixar, Disney and the many other studios pumping out numerous family/teen oriented animation flicks, but when I hear the word anime, I start thinking of my old friends over at Manga. I still remember my first anime adventure, FIRE AND ICE, that I rented while working at Blockbuster when I was in High School. I didn’t really “get it” back then, I was more intrigued by the concept of watching a cartoon movie featuring blood, swearing and nudity. In University I was introduced to VAMPIRE HUNTER D (that and BLOODLUST are still two of my favorites) about a sword swinging vampire bounty hunter with a talking hand. My fascination with anime only grew from there. What draws me in with these films is the fact that the sky’s the limit. Nothing is taboo here, and as much as I love regular films, there’s simply no end to the cool feats you can accomplish in the anime world.

He reminds me of Alucard

My best friend Aaron swears by AKIRA, but I’m more of a NINJA SCROLL man myself. There are so many fascinating elements wrapped into the rich storyline and larger than life (often tragic) characters like Kigero, Jubei and especially the eight devils of Kimon. GHOST IN THE SHELL’s futuristic “BLADERUNNER” setting was engrossing, stylish and quite sophisticated. It’s an edgy Sci-Fi world that literally grabs you by the balls and doesn’t let go. I mention these ones first (not because they’re the only great titles out there), but because, at the time, they opened up a new world for me and it’s very hard to re-create that “first time” feeling you get when anime pops your cherry. Oh, and the boys over at Manga are still going strong with HIGHLANDER: SEARCH FOR VENGEANCE, a must see for fans of the series. I’m also happy to report SPAWN: THE ANIMATED SERIES will be back in 2010, hopefully to HBO.

Mmmm, ninja

Like the family oriented stuff, mature anime offers more than enough venues to suit your individual needs. For the gamers out there, there’s RESIDENT EVIL: DEGENERATION which brought Leon S. Kennedy into the mix (straight off the heels of RESIDENT EVIL 4 which featured Leon as the lead character). I’m a fan of all things RE, from the games to the Milla led feature films. This animated adventure was a fantastic mesh of both worlds, and having just played through RE 4 (my favorite of the series), this flick couldn’t have come at a better time for me. Then there’s FINAL FANTASY ADVENT CHILDREN, the animated feature film which picks up shortly after FINAL FANTASY VII (the game) ends. This thing was a spectacular tour de force from beginning the end, whether you’re a fan of the games or not (and I’ll also add, that you HAVE to watch the “complete” version on Blu-ray. It’s awe-inspiring).

Twelve years after his FF debut, Sephiroth is STILL the man

I’m also very much enjoying the Marvel/DC anime lately. Sure, it’s a middle ground medium when compared to other anime, but it’s getting better and better with each passing year. Titles like HULK VS and GREEN LANTERN: FIRST FLIGHT for example, are fantastic ways for first time fans of Wolverine, Thor and Green Lantern to get to know the characters before seeing feature films like X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE (though admittedly it’s kinda late for that one), the upcoming THOR and Ryan Reynold’s GREEN LANTERN. They may not answer every question, but I personally didn’t know much about GL until watching FIRST FLIGHT. His origin story is far better than I imagined, complex and (if done right) will make for one hell of blockbuster. I’m now VERY excited to see Reynolds bring Hal Jordan to the big screen.

Someday...if I'm lucky

Now for me, the best thing about anime on the comic front is seeing stuff like PLANET HULK come to town, as anyone familiar with the comics knows, is a prologue to a much greater story in WORLD WAR HULK. Epic storylines like this one are generally “cosmic” in nature, meaning they feature a good portion of the corresponding label’s Super Hero roster, and as a result, will probably only come to us via animated format. X-MEN, FANTASTIC FOUR, and (hopefully) THE AVENGERS are no doubt the closest we’ll ever get to seeing various Heroes on the big screen all at once. I’m cool with that, as long as they make it to the animated front. I would love to see THE INFINITE GAUNTLET, CIVIL WAR, DEATH OF CAPTAIN AMERICA and MARVEL ZOMBIES (the last one being a guilty pleasure), to name a few, but rest assured there is no end to the first rate stories they can bring us. So as a fan of all venues, keep em coming Hollywood.

Extra Tidbit: There are vast amounts of anime out there (especially when you delve into the hardcore Japanese titles). I’d love to hear some of YOUR favorites in the strike backs as I’m always on the hunt for more top shelf mature anime.

I would recommand Baccano, recentley watched it. And I loved it! It's very similar to Snatch and Lock, Stock & Two smoking barrels. Except from that it is not money or diamonds that they are after or cross over

I have got to say that anime has definetly come a long way. Like many of you I too fell in love with the genre when i watched Akira, barefoot Gen, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D and the second one too...Robotech is what got me hooked in the beginning, but it wasnt until I watched Princess Mononoke that I truly saw something mind blowing. To see an anime with such depth....it will always be a classic.

There are literally tons of great anime titles to choose from. Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Outlaw Star are some of the series that first got me interested. Newer titles like Bleach and Deathnote are also great. Deathnote has already spawned off three live action movies that were actually well done. I believe at least one of those is getting the Americanized treatment (probably unnecessarily).

I must say its really great to see such an overwhelming positive response for this column… when usually its so controversial. I’m an Anime Fan, It might sound a little lame but the first Anime I ever watched was "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind… for me, its childhood classic… Akira is my favorite “mature” anime, but Ninja scroll runs a close second. Ghost in the shell (only ever wtched the first one), Vamp hunter D and yes, thank you SexyKitten… Appleseed is Awesome (soundtrack kicked a$$).. Even the Ex Machina was great. I’d say my guilty pleasure would be the Tekken Anime (I love the games) and after seeing such a great review from you guys, I believe I’ll watch me some Cowboy Bebop.. I just never watched it since, honestly, I thought the name was a little cheesy.. but I’m sure it’ll make sense after watching it (right?).

Seriously, how can we passing up on Cowboy Bebop? That series completely changed my perspective on anime, and the worlds it can create.

If you haven't explored Cowboy Bebop, you're missing out on a fantastic world of noire, imagination, intrigue, and action.

The chase scene in a canyon on Mars, filled with pipe works to service the cities in the craters of Mars, from the Cowboy Bebop movie is still one of the best chase scenes I've seen put on film, and certainly the best I've seen in animation.

Cowboy Bebop is possibly the best anime series. You're right, there is a lot of creativity and imagination. Plus the stories are spectacular. I'm so glad I kept watching it late one night.

Anime is a form of movies. It's just like talking about the new Pixar, or the few times they talk about Lost, or some other big show. It's people like you with such narrow views on this kind of thing that make it very hard for anime to become really, really mainstream! Thanks man!
