UPDATE - Now updated with the extended trailer!

Normally, I wouldn’t be posting up a video game trailer here, as we are first and foremost a movie site. However, once you watch this new spot for "Halo ODST: from IGN, you’ll see why it’s worth a look.

The thing is shot entirely in live action, and in only a minute and thirty seconds, will have you crying out for a HALO movie. The project has fallen in and out of existence for a long while now, first dropped by Peter Jackson then (sort of) picked up by Steven Spielberg, but when you view something like this, it goes without saying that this IS a movie that should at least be attempted, for better or for worse.

Source: Game Trailers

Extra Tidbit: I think the missing piece to a HALO movie is that Master Chief needs to have a face to be in any way relatable.

Master Chief does not need a face. Read the book "Fall of Reach". THAT is all you need.

I don't think we need to see his face. We can relate to him thru the ODST guys, and the Marines, as well as Cortana. Keeping his face a mystery is part of the fun and some of the challenge of making the movie.

i agree with the thought that a movie would probably work best if it dealt more with the ODST troops with heavy cameo by MC. people wouldn't really want to see a whole movie about a soldier that is pretty much invincible. then again, we all go to movies with the thought that the main character will live until the end of the film anyway (otherwise he wouldn't be the main character of the film no...

Well, Half-Life 2 was heavilly inspired by several classic sci-fi films and b-films, and I believe that was one of them. You should also check out an old movie called "Fortress", which was cited by the creators amongst others.

It's insanely easy to make a good LOOKING live action PROMO for a franchise when you have a good cinematographer and do not have to worry about any actual story or the like.

Also, I find it hard to support Bungie in their endeavors lately. Tired of seeing them milk the shit out of this franchise and no way in hell will I be spending 60 dollars on a 3 hour expansion pack that adds nothing new or fresh to a series that pretty much ran it's course after the first game.

Actually, what made Halo compelling was the fantastically solid physics and programming and the plan B do or die guerilla warfare.

Not to be a jerk, but that's stupid reasoning. What makes Halo so compelling for people IS the story.

Citizen Kane (and Halo isn't the Citizen Kane of games) was a mish mash of every cinema trick. That's why it was so successful and groundbreaking. Orson Welles wasn't doing anything new, he didn't reinvent the wheel. What he DID do was put all the elements that previously existed, and combined them in a unique way for the first time.

Halo did a lot of that too. It didn't reinvent the whell, it just took what previously existed and expanded upon it. Without Halo, video games wouldn't be where they are today. And the promo, while a promo, reflects how far video games have come not only on a console, but in the media as well.

Halo is the game and franchise of the decade. In the hands of a capable filmmaker, it can be an incredibly brilliant film too.

Besides, it's not like they'll follow the games plot step for step any way... like this promo proves, you can do a lot with the Halo universe and create something compelling.

If they made a HALO movie in this r-rated style (seriously it would be fucked up if it wasn't rated r) then they should make it more about an ODST type special forces squad and then give the Master Chief a huge climactic cameo in the film but never be the main character. it would be awesome to see him come and go through out a movie trilogy. its like the only way to make him everybit as mystica...

I too don't play. But too, how big a character would Master Chief need to be in a movie? I know he's the main character, but what little I know he's supposed to be the unbeatable soldier, so wouldn't he be more interesting as a symbol rather than a character? I can also see how this could become "300" in outer space, and I don't know how many people want that.

I don't play video games but Halo seems like a cool enough concept for a movie, especially when guys like Peter Jackson and Spielberg are interested in it.

Guys, his name is spelled Blomkamp. Not Blampkoff. BLOMKAMP. And hey Short Round, Carl Weathers really does look the part! That's astounding. But you're probably right about him being too old.

Personally, I don't think it's the lack of a face that makes Master Chief unrelatable but more the lack of a personality. We don't have any problems with Vader wearing a mask the whole movie, because he has personality. In the books, MC has this great, almost Kirk-ish, "I don't like to lose" point of view. Expand on that more with the movie and I don't think they'll be any problems with him ...

But if that doesn't work, I fully support Red4's idea of telling the story through multiple perspectives. And just for the hell of it, I'm gonna toss out Carl Weathers as a candidate to play Sgt. Johnson. Though he may be a little old and by the time they actually get around to making this flick he'll probably be in assisted living.

To further your point take V from V for Vendetta, always wears a mask and carries the movie with his presonality and dialogue.

Come on Neill Blampkoff, you can do this!
Damn, that was fuckin' incredible. Don't get me wrong, I've casually played Halo before and am no way a fanatic but that has to be one of the best live action video game trailers I've seen in some time.

We shouldn't have to settle just for Blampkoff's short film.

PS - What language were they speaking though?

I think what gives Halo a bad rep are the obsessive online gamers. They use it for mindless fun, completely putting the campaign aside. At any rate, I have been really excited about ODST, and this trailer only makes me more furious that the movie is not being made. THIS THING LOOKS FUCKING SWEET!!!! I had an idea about how the Halo movie could work. It could be sort've like Babel or Crash, you see bits of the story from various perspectives, and they meld together, and culminate in one big climax. That would help to eliminate the lack of relatability due to Master Chief's face not showing - since it would give him less screen time, but not less importance.

Although I enjoy the games, I am not a HALO fan. I think it's way overrated. But that trailer was awesome! They really should put some more effort into getting a HALO movie off the ground. If its done right it would be amazing.

after i watched this trailer a few days ago on a gaming website, i thought to myself that this would probably show up on film sites too. reminding us just how much a halo movie would rock.

i dont see what the problem is with getting this off the floor. Why does the budget need to be huge?? Give it to Neil Blampkoff, or those guys that made that short Halflife film...low budget go...
