RAMPAGE poster

Lots of things have been predicted to happen on the day pigs fly. And as they say, these last few months swine "flu"... So whaddaya know, lots of critics are stunning themselves by writing positive reviews for a Uwe Boll film.

RAMPAGE is unsurprisingly an "ode to violence" and probably less based on a video game than on a wet dream of "Dr." Boll's as it follows the point of view of a sociopath who builds himself a body armor and goes on a murderous spree around town. Think Dexter if he had been adopted by Bill O'Reilley. It stars Boll fixtures Brendan Fletcher and Michael Paré, along with Matt Frewer whom I still say should give us Max Headroom back. Why not? Everything else from the 80s is being recycled and exploited!

Nobody calls it a great film, but most early reviews, primarily from a screening at this year's Fantastic Fest, elevate it way above what the spawn of Ed Wood usually offers. Here's what a few of them had to say.

  • Slash Film calls it "the movie that Postal should have been. It is Falling Down without the morals. Not just good in comparison to the rest of his filmography, but a good movie in its own right."
  • Film School Rejects applauds that "a charismatic performance from Brendan Fletcher and some impressive, twisted action, combine to make for Boll’s most impressive (and most fun) work to date."
  • Film.Com describes it as "Uwe Boll's explosive entry onto the moviemaking scene as a real, honest-to-god filmmaker. He's not adapting a property, he's not spoofing anything."
  • Quiet Earth instructs viewers to "Forget anything you ever knew about Uwe Boll. This is solid cinema and deserves praise."

I've never really followed his movies, though I like Uwe Boll as an entertainer; his declarations and shenanigans are always a hoot. But I have to ask those who did see RAMPAGE: is he really becoming a filmmaker we should take seriously?

Source: IMDb

Extra Tidbit: Remember when Boll made a little jab at Michael Bay? I'd like to see him follow up on that and announce he'll direct a Gobots movie. With Megan Fox. That'd be the laugh of the decade!

Don't give a shit about Boll...
...But I've got to say this. I like this site. I think they do a good job at writing and they seem to be pretty fast at breaking news. That being said, I'm so damn tired of the politics. That was one of the reasons I quit going to AICN- I got tired of all the liberal ranting. I don't begrudge anybody the right to express their opinion, especially in their own forum, but JESUS H CHRIST THIS IS A...

I wanna see Tunnel Rats. No video stores out by me are carrying it. NOT even blockbuster! WTF! I could not believe they didn't have it. And I've loved Mike Pare since his time as Tom Cody in Streets Of Fire.

I'm probably gonna get bashed for this but I never really understood ALL THE HATRED for Uwe Boll. OK, the guy has made numerous shitty movies, but so what? I haven't, nor will I ever, lose sleep over a shit video-game movie. I think its pretty cool he finally made something worth watching.

Have you seen some of his movies? If you had to sit through more then one you'd probably hate him as well. Most of them are so illogically stupid that you literally can not believe what you're watching.

JohnLocke2342: So, let me see if I understand you correctly. Since Uwe Boll has made only shitty movies in the past, he can't possibly make a good one ever in the future? Interesting logic...

Hmmm.. where in my post did I say that he could never make a good movie in the future? I was mentioning how his incredible lack of talent has led him to literally steal and borrow from a lot of movies and then add that to his own. So no, you don't understand me correctly at all.

Personally since metting Mr. Boll in 2007 at Fantasia i've became of fan of is. I maybe one of the only guy that actually love in the name of the king and Postal and his last 2 movies Tunnel rats and Stoic were proof that this guy has some talent. So am not that surprise that critics loved Rampage because when he does his own material and doesn't adapt cheap video, he's quite the talented dire...

Uwe Boll is a talentless piece of shit.. anybody who saw In the Name of the King, or should I say "Pieces of every fantasy movie ever made stolen and put together by Uwe Boll" would agree with me.

I'll probably check it out. I've seen most of his films out of morbid curiousity and the fact that he's the go-to guy for when me and my friends want to have a mind-shakingly awful movie night. Postal was actually pretty good in parts, and I have heard that his original work, as rare as it is, is much better than his slew of video game adaptations.

I've seen all of his movies too (hated SEED, but HEART OF AMERICA cannot be overlooked for his ambitious desire to do something he felt was strong, even if it isn't a perfect film).

I wouldn't even begin to classify him as the worst director ever. Is he bad? Yeah, for the most part. But he's nowhere near the pinnacle of being the worst ever.

including "Seed" and "Heart Of America", and have hated them. "Postal" in my opinion is by large and far his worst one, but I will see this, and if it is good, I might have an aneurysm.

Setting the bar so low...
...you couldn't trip over it if you tried. Stories like this one are how George W. Bush got elected...twice. Not by being good, but by beating everyone's lowest of the low expectations. Be wary my friends.

looking forward to it
I actually really liked Postal. It wasn't anywhere near Oscar worthy, but it was fun, violent, totally politically incorrect and pretty damn funny. I like Boll the person and want to see him make a couple more fun movies that don't take themselves too seriously...I'm also one of those who don't find him the worst director of all time...

Makes no Sense
Your Dexter/Bill O'Reilly line makes no sense at all. Bill is not known for being violent or killing anyone. A Dexter/Charles Manson comparison would have been better.

Wow - you're not the sharpest tool in the shed. Clearly it was a comment based on the political views of the main character. It doesn't sound like the main character is a charismatic cult leader who convinces others to commit murder in his place.

I say good for him. This whole universal "Uwe Boll is the worst director in the world" thing is getting old anyway.

Lol I'm really the only one who thinks its lame/stale that for years, every time a bad piece of filmmaking is mentioned, there HAS to be some sort of "witty" comparision to Uwe Boll? I mean I certainly don't like his work by any means, but I'm just sick of hearin the guy's name all the time. Hmmm, maybe it IS just me. Meh.

I kinda liked Postal.

Someone should let Film.com know that this isnt Boll's first attempt at original filmmaking. I heard his earlier film, Heart of America is actually pretty good too

I saw Rampage recently and it's simply the Dawn of the Dead of 2009. A socio-political blast coupled with an extremely fun and intense movie!!
