Raimi talks Spidey 4

Villain speculation on SPIDER-MAN 4 is only surpassed by villain speculation on BATMAN 3 (DARK KNIGHT 2?), but it's still a hot topic for debate nonetheless. But with a lot of Peter Parker's remaining foes a bit on the cartoonish side, what bad guy will fit with the tone of the movie?

MTV sat down with Sam Raimi to talk villains, and though he didn’t drop a name, he said who he liked and didn’t, and explained his rationale behind the villain(s) he has chosen for the next film. "I love the Lizard," said Raimi. "

"There's a great story there in the Marvel comic books about Dr. Connors. I'm less familiar with Carnage." Raimi then took a long pause.

"I'm not allowed to say at this point," he confessed.

"What we're trying to do right now is really understand the journey Peter is going to go on this time and have the villain maybe be a counter to that growth, something that he has to overcome," Raimi said. "Or maybe he has to grow in a way to overcome the villain, because there always seem to be stories of coming of age, of a young man growing up and learning things about life, so once we are identifying the exact movement that Peter has to grow to, I think the villain—and we're trying this right now; we're trying to choose a villain based on who would be the proper counter to that growth, so we really have dramatic conflict."

Yeah, like when Peter Parker was going through his emo-hipster-dance phase, he logically fought Sandman, Green Goblin II and Venom, combining the emotional fragility of sand with the douchiness of air-snowboarding with the goth get-up of an alien symbiote. Dramatic conflict!

Whatever, at least Raimi seems like he’s thinking carefully about this decision, which is somewhat reassuring. But part of me thinking he’s just ready to be done with this series so he can go have fun making WORLD OF WARCRAFT with hot Night Elf babes.

Not trying to defend SM3, but all 3 baddies were justified (if convoluted) in the over-arcing revenge/redemption theme.

I'd like to see Peter dealing with the further mutation of his powers in the next film. The lizard would be a perfect villain in this case and... if done properly...(braces for backlash) they could introduce Carnage as the ultimate evil that Spidey could become...

There. I said it. I'd like to see Carnage.

Why doesn't anybody remember that Spidey 1 & 2 were great? I'm looking forward to this one. I say Lizard and Kraven...or Lizard and Kingpen. And gimme Bruce's cameo as Mysterio.

It's about time we got the Lizard. I'd be cool with Mysterio or the Scorpion, too, or any of the old-school villains. But that bit about Carnage worries me. I hope he's not having carnage forced upon him; that character is even more aweful than Venom.

I say...
bring on Connors and the Lizard. Probably the most logical step to take seeing as how they've built up to it throughout the last flicks.

The lizard has to be in the next one. It would just be really ridiculous if he isn't. Also, the look of him needs to be creepy looking, but at the same time really bad ass. Kind of like when you first see the face of the predator in predator.

Need Jeffery Dean Morgan as Kraven, who comes to town to hunt spider-man, along the way he hunts down the lizard, and maybe other villains..like scorpion or rhino. Not more origin stories, just jump in with already having the rhino in there and scorpion, too. Jeffery dean morgan could fill Kraven's role, easy, though!

I can't wait for this one! Raimi is going to blow people away. I think he took it personal when some fanboys whined about SM3. It wasn't his fault that they crammed Venom down his throat and in to that film. He's taking this back to SM2 quality and I'm all for it regardless of the villain.

The Lizard is absolutely the next logical choice. It has potential to give us a villain that was as good as, if not, better than Alfred Molina's Doc Ock from Spidey 2.

IMVHO, Spidey 3 felt like that's enough.
That's your little story told and resolved.

"4" movies often feel like one movie too many... Superman 4, Alien 4.

Lizard sounds good to me. I would also like something more like Spiderman 2 that focuses on Peter Parker as a character and it sounds like that's what Raimi is for.

This WILL be better than Spidey 3 I'm sure, as Raimi was pretty much forced to include Venom.

I hope it's the lizard, but I wonder if it will still be Dylan Baker. Since he's not as well known as the other actors who were cast as villians, I wonder if they will feel the need to cast a bigger name. Carnage would be cool and make up for the lame venom in 3, but i think they should build him up for a villian in the 5th or 6th film.

I think....
that the villan should be Dr. Connors. If they were not going to do anything with him, then they would not have him making so many apperances in the movies. I also think that they should have Carnage and Venom in the sequels and then they should end the ffranchise at 6.

People don't realise but that is supposed to be the whole point of Doc ock, he gains the power and decides to use it for bad and his own gain, the opposite to what Peter Parker chooses to do. People don't realise that, and though he was cool in spiderman 2, was done totally wrong. Doc ock's journey is supposed to be the same as Peter parker's up until when he chooses to go bad.

The Lizard sounds on par with the emotional journey Peter needs to overcome as a hero. The Green Goblin didn't really provide that aspect and neither did Dr. Octopus. Sandman was a copout, Green Goblin II was served as a wrap up of what was occurring for the pass three films, and Venom was just to please fans.

If the villain is Carnage, Mysterio, or Rhino, I'll be pissed.

So, through the sensational coverage of the Daily Bugle, the Lizard comes to the attention of Kraven the Hunter. Having already killed at least one evry other animal on the planet, he has become bored with the hunt and the prospect of this vicious new game has piqued his interest. so, Spidey has to Stop Kraven from killing Connors/Lizard while trying to stop the Lizard from disemboweling New York. Where's the emotional connection you ask? I don't know. But it would make one kick-ass Spidey flick.

As much as I like Raimi, I never thought he got the tone of spider-man right. Stan Lee always talked about Parker's personnal life but he never turned his comics into coming-of-age, afterschool-specials type of stories. Spider-Man needs to be heroic and save other people, not just his friends and family!

It makes sense for the emotional growth aspect. Connors as the villain would affect the lives of both Spiderman and Peter, the same way the first two villains did.

Lizard
If they don't finally bring in Lizard than I will be pissed. They've built Dr. Connors character up from the very begining, giving him more and more screen time each movie. They also have a great actor in Dylan Baker. THey don't even need another villain if they go with Lizard. Hes powerful enough to be a major threat to Spidey, no need to throw anyone else in there.
