Hugh at the 2009 Oscars

Not to sound like a brownnoser, but I didn't watch the Oscars this year - I preferred following Mike Sampson's funny-as-heck rundown right here. I did hear great things about Hugh Jackman's tenure though, and many speculated the ceremony had found a new long-running host in the tradition of Bob Hope, Johnny Carson and Billy Crystal. Not the case.

The Academy Awards are already deep into preparations for the next show this coming March, and so a frontman has to be named soon. According to Variety, sources close to Jackman confirmed he turned the gig down in order to keep his mind on his current Broadway run then get his head back into movies for a while. He might host it again, but isn't keen on doing it 2 years in a row.

The 82nd Academy Awards, held on March 7th, will be produced by Adam Shankman, the guy who directed HAIRSPRAY and THE PACIFIER and CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2. So clearly THAT won't be a show hosted by Russel Brand. Names, anyone? I say Ewan McGregor - funny, sings and dance, and has the force on his side.

Source: Variety

Extra Tidbit: I'm trying to think (which is painful), but I honestly can't remember the last time I watched the Oscars. There was a time I wouldn't have missed it, but, you know... gets old after a while.

Agreed with Canto - Not an actor but a comedian
Why would you not watch the Oscars?

If you're even remotely interested in movies and don't watch the Oscars, that's like remotely being interested in football and not watching the Superbowl (or baseball and the World Series).

A Young Hot Woman!
Everyone has mentioned men (kind of includes Ellen aswell), if I'm going to watch this, I'd rather it be some young hot woman; see who's popular near the time, bingo! Kate Beckinsale, easy.

I think Ricky Gervais should pull doble duty this year and host both the Golden Globes AND the Oscars.. dude is usually the funniest part of these award shows, having him host the GG's was a stroke of genius, and bringing him on board for the Oscars would be as well!

Too bad
I wanted to watch the Oscars just bc of him. He was great. Now I donīt know...big NO to NPH. He is more a TV star, practically unknown outside the US and he already hosted Emmys and Tonys. He should be careful not to get typecast.

Jackman did a great job
It's a shame he's not coming back.

The problem with getting any smart comedian on the Oscars is that the network will be riding hard on them not to say anything controversial. After Stephen Colbert pissed off Dubya and his government at that one dinner, you know he's never going to get picked for the Oscars.

Wow
Things are getting bad here. Show's the quality of this film site once again when writer's don't even watch the Oscars and then celebrate it. I don't care how boring it is. Back to Slashfilm.

I know he's controversial, but let him host again. I really liked his hosting gig. Different than most Oscars I've seen.

And I wouldn't mind seeing (Billy) Crystal host again.

Conan O'brien, Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres would be cool. I hope they go with someone unexpected...like Jerry Seinfeld. Haha how random would that be.

It seems kind of messed up to have an actor host the Oscars anyway, especially popular successful ones like Hugh Jackman or Ewan McGregor, they should be there to get awards or just be guests. Its almost like, yea we know you didnt get nominated for anything but hey you can sing and dance for all the actors that did and make them laugh if you want! They should have Jon Stewart do it again or be...
