Ledger for DirecTV Nov. 2, 2009

So many of you "strongly disagreed" with me when I said that I thought the recent Farley/Spade DirecTV commercial was in poor taste. I'm not trying to reopen that debate per se, but I did say in my article, “What’s next, freaking Christian Bale selling a DVR while bashing Heath Ledger’s face in during the DARK KNIGHT’s interrogation scene?”

Well someone over at Landline TV had the same thought as me, and they’ve assembled this pretty excellent video which chronicles practically just that, Ledger selling DirecTV while being interrogated by Batman in THE DARK KNIGHT. Also in the video are other dead celebrities, JFK and Jesus, making similar pitches.

On either side of the debate, you have to admit that at least the Ledger one is pretty good. Watch below:

Extra Tidbit: Yes, Jesus was a celebrity. No, that is not sacrilege.

Say what? Former friend would be apt: Farley single-handedly alienated himself from all his SNL pals during the last year or two of his drug abuse. That's why none of his buddies from SNL got him off the junk -- he started taking advantage of them and treating them like shit whenever they got close to him. Spade said he recalled going to visit Farley in some nightclub and Farley was acting nice to him and he could tell straight away that he was after money. Sure enough Farley asked for a loan and Spade knew it was for drugs, so he refused, and Farley began getting really ugly with him. The dude literally died in a pool of his own blood after arguing with a hooker, and one of my friends who lived in Hollywood back then said he personally saw Farley fumbling down the street with a hooker one night screaming all types of obscenities at her ("You fuckin' bitch!" was a choice quote he remembers).

My point is that you need to stop confusing a celebrity's persona with his actual personality. Farley was an actor. Just because he was likable and funny in Tommy Boy and died tragically doesn't mean (a) one of his former co-stars isn't entitled to using a film HE STARRED IN as part of a promotional deal simply because the other actor died, nor does it mean the dead actor in question was a saint deserving of our utmost respect.

the_jer, I have no problem making fun of dead people or anything of the such. I'm a pretty hard guy to offend. The problem here is that it's all dead people. It's pretty sad advertising and it is condescending. As condescending as most, if not all advertising is, but you can add a spoonful of cocky in there too. I haven't seen the Farley one, and I'm not going looking for it.

For whatever reason you have for defending these commercials like they're yours is your own perogative, and yeah sure, so what if they do have the rights. It's still poor taste, sloppy, shabby work and that's all there is too it. Rights or no rights, it's still just tacky. Funny works best when the audience is in on the joke. You may not have noticed. But for the most part, no one is laughing. Well you are. Enjoy.

wtf?!?

no, I'm pretty sure they were real. It is pretty obvious by the poorly edited cut-ins, the actors who look nothing like the real people, and the subject matter, that there is no way these could be fake. how could you doubt their authenticity?

Do you really think their right to use the footage is the point? It's an ethics issue...it's pretty in-your-face absolutely obvious. If you're going to debate yay or nay on if they should be making these commercials, at least know what the fucking controversy is.

In no way is DirecTV condescending or disrespectful just because they use footage from a 15 year old movie, which happened to star a now-dead celebrity. The fact of the matter is, Paramount can do whatever the hell they want with that footage. They own the footage. They own Chris Farley's likeness and performance from that movie. It's a fucking commercial. And Chris Farley has been dead for over ten years now. Christ, the dude died from a cocaine overdose. Stop putting the man on a pedestal. And before anyone attacks me back, let me say that I myself am a Comcast customer AND a Chris Farley fan, so my remarks are in no way affected by my personal opinions on either of them.
