Johnny Depp has been sparring with Disney lately over the departure of chairman Dick Cook, a longtime friend of Depp's. There was talk he was so upset about it, he was considering leaving the PIRATES sequel, and if he walked from that, surely he wouldn’t be sticking around to play Tonto in THE LONE RANGER.
But since that original news, Depp has made amends with the studio, is signed on for PIRATES, and according to Jerry Bruckheimer, will still be donning the headband of Tonto as well.
Bruckheimer said to expect Depp to do for Tonto what he did with Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.
"[Pirates writers Ted] Elliot and [Terry] Rossio worked on that also with some other writers and with Johnny [Depp]," Bruckheimer said in a group interview last week in Santa Monica, Calif. "So they're creating something that has a kind of true to the Western [feel], but adding other additional elements like we did with Pirates so it won't be just a straight-ahead western."
"We're still creating a pretty wide net and figuring it out," Bruckheimer said. "It comes down to who is available when we want to make it. We have a wish list."
Could THE LONE RANGER really do for cowboys and indians what PIRATES did for uh, pirates? I’m not sure, but I do know that it’s pretty tough to mix other genres with western, just ask WILD WILD WEST.
