Cusack and Preacher?

Is John Cusack fishing for a role in PREACHER?

Perhaps, at least he thinks that's what it is.

The peeps over at io9 got an exclusive with Cusack where the topic of comic book movies came up. As you might already know, Sam Mendes will be directing with John August (GO, CHARLIES ANGELS) penning the screenplay.

Cusack is down with doing a comic novel, but would rather do something more adult oriented because those comics have the better stories in his opinion. The site asked the actor if there was anything specific he wanted to do, to which he said, "Not one that I particularly know that I would like to do, but whenever I've come across one, I've really liked them." Cusack then recalls a story he really liked, "There was one or two that I heard of that sounded really cool. One of them was about, I think... it's a vampire and a killer, and they're on the road, and it's this really strange story. I thought that sounded pretty cool."

Obviously the first thing that pops up is PREACHER to which he replied, "I think it might have been Preacher." Whether he read that particular script or not, he said that he really would like to get involved in it. So who would Cusack like to play? "I'd say either the vampire or the priest. One of those two guys." Wow. I really can't see him playing either role, even though he looks a lot like Jesse. Cassidy is pretty f*cking crazy, the whole comic is really f*cking crazy.

PREACHER was created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon. In short, the comic is about a preacher, his girlfriend, and a vampire who travel around the United States to find God. The preacher was possessed by a thing called Genesis which rivals the powers of God himself. God has the answers about preacher's powers that he so desperately needs.

Source: io9

Extra Tidbit: Do I like the idea of John August writing the script for this? No, not really. He's got a few decent screenplays (GO being my favorite), but nothing that might make me think he'd write an awesome PREACHER.

I dunno about Preacher...
Cuz I didn't read it, but seriously, the guy can act and jumped thru hoops for a role in Watchmen he didn't get. Let's get him into SOME kind of comic book movie, instead of douche bags like Channing Tatum (HTF does he keep getting work?)

As much as I loved Preacher, I think the movie wouldn't work. I think it would definitely be better as an HBO series, and as far as the screenplay goes, they should just use the comic.

Cusack too old for Jesse but....
I really don't think Cusack is right for Jesse but I would love to see him in a role for sure, may be as Starr although I like Jason Issacs for Starr, I'm sure they'll nail the casting still not totally sure who should play Jesse.

Ick.
The only way to do this series justice is to do what Kevin Smith wanted to do -- each issues translates to one hour of an HBO or Showtime series. And John Cusack is too old for Jesse.

There's no way of adapting Preacher without it being a complete abomination. The whole cool thing about reading Preacher is that it's essentially unfilmable. Why does Hollywood need to bastardize this?

Well it doesn't make sense to throw temper tantrums whenever someone tries. If it sucks, it sucks - but it could be fucking AWESOME so why not support it?

I agree that it is cinematic, and *could* be done right, but sadly it never will be. Too violent for the MPAA, too much material to cover for just one movie (or even two or three, really). Maybe an unrated miniseries would work a little better, but that's apparently not happening. I just don't see an R-rated studio movie from a script penned by John August working here. At all.

Watchmen wants a word with you.

Preacher was insanely cinematic, some parts of the books practically begging to be put on film. The difficulty comes with some of the backstory comics, which don't necesarilly HAVE to be in the film as a whole.

Honestly, this is something that'd have to be 2 or 3 movies to do right - but it is do-able.

I'm still sticking with Cillian Murphy and Willem Dafoe as Jesse and Cassidy.

He's too old for Jesse and he wouldn't make a good Cassidy, if he'd have read it he'd probably know that,'A killer and a vampire', nearly there John but not quite.
Not sure about Jesse but I say Paul Bettany for Cassidy.

Cusack and Preacher?
Aside from being about fifteen years too old for the role of Jesse, I don't think he's an especially good fit for either JC or Cassidy.

If John C. took the role seriously, he would be one hell of good preacher! So let it begin with me; JC for JC!

Look, I like Grosse Point Blank but there is no way in hell a basic schlub like Cusack could play such an morally angry guy like Jesse Custler or the awesomely psychotic Cassidy.

This would be an interesting casting choice. But Cusack's too old now. A younger Cusack would have been great. I want the best for this project. It's near and dear to me: I was Jesse Custer for Halloween!

Right on. GO was really the only thing that I actually dug of his. I'm hoping he reaches deep and pulls out the big guns for this. I mean, come on. It's PREACHER.
